Austin Roadrunners? By any chance you from Austin? Looks like you got your inspiration from the Westlake Chaps, but I could be wrong.

Actually I'm not from Austin. Arizona, actually. I just looked for a major city on the Sun Belt that could hold a rivalry to Texas and chose Austin, to make a inner city rivalry between the two teams.

I read the story about Larry Coker taking over the newly founded UTSA Roadrunners and wanted to make a team like 'em. I was considering names other than the Roadrunners, but that just sounded the best. Not sure if you're mad about me doing that (I don't know why you would be), but yeah. That was my inspiration.

Anyways, first game is underway and it should be up within the hour.

Austin American-Statesman

Roadrunners win inaugural game in thriller

On just the third play of the inaugural Austin University Roadrunners season, Sophomore LB Alex Caldwell got to the quarterback and forced the first fumble in Roadrunners history, along with the first sack. Hopefully, a sign of good things to come. Soon, the first touchdown pass would be in the books by Junior Ryan Wheeler, who led a 71-yard drive down the field while completing 7 of 8 passes for 55 yards. As the first quarter came to an end, the score was 7-0, the newly founded Roadrunners in the lead.

Unfortunately, the lead did not last long. In an interesting call by SMU coach June Jones, the Mustangs went for a 4th and 11 conversion at the Roadrunners 24. The decision paid off, as Mustangs Junior quarterback JJ McDermott threw a 24 yard TD pass to Senior receiver Zach Zimmerman. Jones said about the decision after the game “It’s not that I had no confidence in my kicker to make a short field goal, it’s that I had so much confidence in my offense to convert that 4th down that I sent them out there and trusted them. You gotta go big or go home. Tell that to Jerry Gray.”

After a drive ending in a fumble, the Roadrunners regained possession via interception. Not long after, the Roadrunners ended the half on a 10 yard rush by Wheeler for a touchdown. At the end of the first half, the Roadrunners led 14-7. Unsuccessful drives filled the third quarter until a 76 yard (record-breaking) pass from McDermott to Emmanuel Sanders knotted the game at 14. The game wasn’t tied for long though, and the Roadrunners ended the third quarter with a 67 yard screen pass to Senior running back Emmanuel Goins that ended in another TD pass for Wheeler.

Two touchdowns were scored quickly, one for each team. 28-21, the Roadrunners were upsetting the Mustangs. The 4th quarter had just started though, and there was much time for the Mustangs to come back. Slowly, McDermott sliced his way through the Roadrunner defense and found himself leading the Mustangs come back. The drive was halted at the 3 yard line however, and the Roadrunners defensive players were not eager to have the loss pinned on them. 4th down came, and with just three yards to go the Mustangs went for the pass. CB Nathan Chavis deflected the ball, and seemingly sealed the win for the Roadrunners. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Roadrunners RB Emmanuel Goins fumbled on the play that would’ve sealed the win for the Roadrunners. The Mustangs recovered and capitalized on the mistake, throwing a TD pass to tie it at 28 with 20 seconds left before OT was forced.

The Mustangs won the toss for OT, but the Roadrunner defense came up big again. A fumble forced on the Mustangs first play and the Roadrunners recovered. A simple field goal as the Roadrunners turn ensued won the game for the Roadrunners in a fashion no one likes to win by. 31-28, Roadrunners win in overtime. "We played a very mediocre game." Coach Jerry Gray said immediately following the win "A win is a win, but damn. Mediocre wins in OT versus mediocre teams should and will not be allowed on this team."
