Urban Myth or Fact: Meyer to South Bend?
The year was 2003, Roy Williams was cutting down the nets, another trip to the Final Four for the Kansas Jayhawks. Consecutive Final Four appearances, but 2003 was very different from 2002. A cloud of media attention and speculation focused on the Head Coach, all while Kansas was entering the championship game against Syracuse.
Roy Williams adamantly denied being interested in the Head Coaching position at his "dream job" - North Carolina. The job opened after the storied North Carolina program went through a rough patch with Head Coach Matt Doherty. Years with Doherty were unsuccessful and rumors were the former assistant turned big time coach was coming home...
In the end, Syracuse would beat Kansas in a close game where many argued it was the fault of poor coaching late in the game, as possibly the Tar Heels position was in the head of Roy Williams.
The situation look eerily similar as Urban Meyer heads into another BCS National Championship game. The Gators coach once passed up the job in South Bend, when leaving Utah for Florida. While calling Notre Dame his "dream job," he has adamantly denied all rumors that he wants the job at Notre Dame.
Notre Dame is coming off of a bowl loss and losing season; just as Florida is looking for back-to-back National titles. Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said the coaching search would be "outside the program" as the remaining coaching staff weighs their options. Corwin Brown, John Tenuta and Rob Ianello have all decided not to wait for a new Head Coach and left the team. All seemed to be top Head Coach candidates, thus the coaching search does seem to be open.
Money does not seem to be an problem for Notre Dame. The buyout for Urban Meyer would be $750,000, for his remaining contract at Florida. He did recently sign a contract extension, but the option years and buyout clause make it less of a financial burden than that of the infamous Rich Rodriguez buyout.
If Urban Meyer is not the answer, the who? Speculation swirls around Cincinnati Head Coach Brian Kelly, who seems to be the next best option. Former NFL Head Coach John Gruden was spotted at the Liberty Bowl, but the focus seems to be on collegiate coaches. Other names that have been mentioned are Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson, Rutger Head Coach Greg Schiano, and Georgia Assistant Willie Martinez.
The question remains: Is this another case of Roy Williams or in this instance, is it Les Miles?
