Re: Syracuse Orangmen Dynasty (NCAA 10)

Tampa, FL-True Freshman Bob Lake had possibly the rudest entry into the world of college football of any player ever when he was thrust into the starting role in the middle of a contest against the top team in the country. Lake’s lack of preparation and general youth and inexperience created one of the worst performances from a quarterback that Mac can remember. Today should be different. This is a USF team that is struggling and is nothing like the one that stomped SU 34-14 last year. Both teams played well in the first half but Syracuse benefitted by an injury to USF starting quarterback BJ Daniels as Daniels was hurt midway through the second quarter with the score 14-10. He would return to start the third quarter but that injury caused the offense to stall thanks to Kimmel hounding Daniels’ backup.

In the second half the Bulls score to go up 17-14. Mac is starting to feel the pressure and gambles on 4th and 4 from midfield and doesn’t get it. The offensive struggles the last few drives has Mac worried. Thanks to a stout defense and a goal line stand USF settles for a field goal to extend their lead to 20-14. On the ensuing kick Donte Davis makes up for his special teams fumble last week with a big time kick return to the house. South Florida takes the lead right back and gets a two pointer right before end of 3rd to go up 28-21. This time around Davis fields the kick from his own three but stumbles when he plants his foot and falls, giving the Orange the ball at their own four! Mac is still a bit pessimistic but he need not be as it took the Orangemen only six plays to go 96 yards thanks to a big run by Collier for 6. Fast-forward not to 5:00 left in the game with things still tied up at 28. The Orange take the field prepared to put the winning score on the board and do just that as Raupers makes the winning kick with :21 left thanks to a run heavy drive to put him in that position. With :04 left Daniels makes final heave downfield as he is nailed by Kimmel. The pass falls harmlessly to the turf. Syracuse had to resort to a high school philosophy as they get the win thanks to a big running game, sounds defense, and a big play in special teams.

Carter chugged forward (L) as Lake struggled (R)

Re: Syracuse Orangmen Dynasty (NCAA 10)

Syracuse, NY-The Orangemen get Ryan Nassib back from injury which means the passing game may not be a myth after all. In the first half Louisville controlled the tempo of the game and was haing their will on both sides of the ball. If it wasn’t for an Orange surge before the half Syracuse would have been hurting. However, the surge gave them a 24-20 lead at the half.

After looking over the numbers at halftime Mac realized he had gotten a little excited with Nassib’s return and passed 14 times in the first half while only giving Carter seven carries. That switches now. After a bruising 3rd and nearly all the 4th quarter Louisville takes over with :39 seconds left on own 25 down 33-27 and with no timeouts. As long as Syracuse can prevent a miracle they will go home winners after yet another bog fight of a game. On the third play of the drive Froman breaks a tackle from a blitzing Henderson from his corner position and heaves the ball downfield. Chichester has a step on both the corner and safety…drops ball!

Re: Syracuse Orangmen Dynasty (NCAA 10)

Syracuse, NY-The Orangemen decided to be just that: orange. Mac felt he needed to spice things up this game. Sure, it’s senior night but Duke is horrible and those ugly orange jerseys get everyone talking. Recruits were in the house and those orange get ups may scare them off…

Visiting-
CB Daniel Williams
QB Brian Christian
S Randy Richardson

…The Orange start the game with back-to-back goal line stands including pick six while doing their own scoring on offense. At the half the score was 21-10 though Duke was having some serious success between the twenties they just couldn’t cash in. In the second half the ‘Cuse got it going as Delone Carter brokes the school record for rushing yards in a season early in the third quarter. Late in the game with things well in hand Bailey scores with :08 left. Because the score was 44-24 Mac told Nassib to kneel the ball on the two point conversion in honor of 44.

Re: Syracuse Orangmen Dynasty (NCAA 10)

Glendale, AR-This is the second BCS Bowl birth for the Orange in as many years under Mac. This year the Orangemen are hoping for a bit different result after being run over by Penn State last year in the Sugar Bowl. In order to pull of this win Syracuse will rely on their rushing offense that ranks first in the country. The Orange shouldn’t have too tough of a go as the Aggies have a very small defensive line and no backers that weigh over 217 pounds. What the Aggies to have, however, is a very explosive offense and on the second play from scrimmage Jerrod Johnson hit his tailback, Gray, on screen and 68 yards later Gray had put the Aggies on the board. Right away fans start thinking that is going to be another case of SU and to a greater extent, the Big East as a whole, being outclassed by other major conferences? Sadly, yes, this would be another one of those cases. Syracuse looked bad on defense giving up huge chucks of yards through the air allowing Johnson to break the school record for passing yards in a game. Every time the Orange would threaten to make it a game Johnson would match his team right down the field and score. Mac’s secondary did not stand a shot again these Aggie receivers.

Carter had a good day (L) but it wasn’t enough to stop Gray and company (R)

Re: Syracuse Orangmen Dynasty (NCAA 10)

End of the Year review-

Quarterbacks-C+
Ryan Nassib is a serviceable quarterback put he does not bring anything special to the table. As long as he is not asked to win the game the Orange should be fine. When Syracuse falls behind is when Nassib’s lack of skill shows the greatest. Bob Lake struggled mightily this season strictly because he is a true freshman. Mac is not going to write Lake off as a flop even though Lake lacked the composure of the average high school quarterback.

Runningbacks-A
The only thing keeping this grade from an A+ is the lack of a guy who could go all the way at any moment. Sure Collier and Bailey are elusive runners that take short runs and turn them into big plays but they lack finishing speed. Delone Carter became one of the most successful backs in the history of Syracuse football which is saying a lot considering the phenomenal tradition the Orangemen have at that position. Carter reminded many of Joe Morris with his every down hit you in the mouth style. Carter may not have a career in football after this point but he will always be welcome in Syracuse. At fullback Steve Barnes is great. On paper he looks like a mess and is not a workout warrior in any sense but he is a football player through and through. When the ball is snapped this kid can be relied on to do his job to the fullest. Mac loves this kid, look for him to get more carries next year.

Receivers/Tight Ends-C-
Total lack of consistency from this group. None of these kids could put all the piece together. They all had skills but they lacked something that kept them from being consistent contributors. Mac might be in trouble with this group next year.

Offensive line-B+
This group benefitted from having another year together. The run blocking was very, very good and McKenzie should have taken home the Rimmington Award. Pass blocking still needs work but with four starters graduating Mac’s quarterbacks might be in for a rough season in 2011.

Defensive line-B
This group of no names once again made just enough plays to be taken seriously. They were relatively tough against he run and rushed the passer decently. They lacked the overall ability to rush four and get pressure but they weren’t embarrassed by any means. By the end of the season they were stout in the running game and were getting to the quarterback more and more. They once again produced above their abilities because of their relentless style of play.

Linebackers-B
Doug Hogue, Mike Stenclik, and Derrell Smith all finish their Syracuse careers with solid senior seasons. Their numbers did dip some but that is because the offense played a ball control style and the defense generally got off the field faster than last year. It was also nice this year to have some depth.

Secondary-B
Nico Scott did not progress intothe lock-down corner Mac was hoping for but still had a respectable season even if it was a let down. At the safeties McKinnon and Suter were once again nothing more than tackling machines because they can’t defend a pass worth a lick. At the other corner spot Grant Mayes was solid. The surprise here was John Mark Henderson who had a monster year fro the nickel spot with seven picks and four touchdowns. Henderson won Syracuse more than once game and can be considered their defensive MVP.

Special Teams-C
An otherwise successful kicking and returning unit is marred by the horrible performance of their coverage teams that allowed seven kicks or punts to be taken back for scores.

Coach-A-
Once again it took Mac too long to find this team’s identity but once he did they were very solid. This was a veteran team that had the ability to challenge for a Big East title and they did just that by becoming, once again, conference champions. Mac handled the injury to Nassib well and escaped a few games with wins but there is still a big problem with Syracuse. In his two years they are 14-1 in the Big East bug 4-8 outside of it. Those four wins came against lowly Akron (twice), Duke, and Maine…not exactly power programs. The looses on the other hand were to both power schools and mid-level major conference opponents with the average score being 49-20. Next year the Orange need to get out of the gate better and finish better while breaking in a whole new crop of starters, should be interesting.
----------End year 2-----------
