Will Webb: A Coaching Legend is Born

OOC: I have started to realize I kind of dig writing from the perspective of one instead of general ESPNish reports on games. That being said, as I was reading through the dynastys, such as kblu54's and a bunch of others have led me to decide on a "Coaching Road to Glory". No one is going to get their first job at a top school like Texas, so I will start at the bottom, and only take jobs at schools that offer me a position. With that being said, I present you Will Webb. This being said, I may end up going into the pros at some point.

Florida International Hires New Head Football Coach
February 21, 2009

After a disappointing 5-7 season under Mario Cristobal, Florida International announced the hiring of former New Mexico State offensive coordinator Will Webb. With an all-time record of 21-57, Florida International has yet to achieve any success in collegiate football.

Webb's offense's at New Mexico State have ranked at or near the top of the WAC in his two season stretch as offensive coordinator. Before that Webb was the quarterbacks coach at Oregon State. Webb, 29 becomes the youngest head coach in college football history, an honor not lost on the new football coach.

"I feel honored to become the youngest football coach in the history of the NCAA, but that's where that stops. Today Florida International has turned over a new leaf. We will not step down from any team or any challenge. We will go bowling every season I am here. That is a promise. If that doesn't happen, I coach for free that year. It's my job to get this program on the map, and if I'm not doing it I don't deserve to be paid."

With his promise of donating his salary back to the school if his Panthers don't make it to a bowl game, Coach Webb has given more than just bulletin board material to the rest of the Sun Belt Conference, but a swagger not seen on the campus of Florida International.

I hate Press Conferences | Posted by Webb 2.22.09

I don't know how many of you saw my press conference with Florida International. I honestly hate getting up in front of the press. It doesn't scare me or anything like that, but they tend to alter your message. That's all fine and dandy for them, but I'm a big fan of getting the truth out there and getting it straight.

Now that its over, I have a lot of work to do at Florida International. There aren't many jobs in college football where you get a chance to be around at the beginning of a program. There is a great base here, but I know this is going to be an uphill struggle. From what I've seen on film, this team is headed in the right direction, and it's my job to guide them there.

I've never really been too involved in the recruiting process at either Oregon State or New Mexico State, but I have a pretty good understanding of what must go on, and what we need here in terms of athletes at FIU. We have a lot to offer student athletes being in Miami. I know that was one of the big reasons why I even interviewed here. Well that, and the fact they were the only program to invite me in for an interview.

Well, I think that's more than enough for now. I'll be back later on with some more updates about the recruiting process and other things.

Keep it Loose
