2011 Offense
Quarterbacks SR 11 Lawrence Shaw 6-4 184 lbs 88 Ovr SR 16 Jermaine Dougherty 6-4 204 lbs 83 Ovr FR 18 Arthur Vaughn 6-2 227 lbs 76 Ovr FR 2 C.J. Irvin 6-2 210 lbs 68 Ovr Quarterback Lawrence Shaw will miss graduated wide receiver Andrew Utley on the outside. Coach’s Thoughts: “Well, we return two seniors who both gained some starting experience last season. Lawrence Shaw will go into the season as the starter, and we really like his decision-making and what he can do on the ground. We’ll be ecstatic if we can get a whole season out of him injury-free. The backup will be Jermaine Dougherty, who played a lot last season for an injured Shaw. Dougherty struggled with turnovers, and if he is forced into action this season we hope to improve his decision-making. Both quarterbacks completed less than 50% of their passes, as our offense degenerated into long bomb heaves more often than not. Arthur Vaughn made our team as a walk-on last season and is now a redshirt freshman. He’s made big strides in learning the offense. C.J. Irvin is an incoming, speedy freshman who we plan on redshirting.” A-Back 27 JR Ricky Kemp 5-11 242 lbs 91 Ovr 1 JR Jeremy Reyes 5-8 183 lbs 84 Ovr 4 FR Tony Johnson 6-0 197 lbs 79 Ovr 31 SO Wes Jones 6-1 214 lbs 78 Ovr 44 FR Lorenzo Williams 6-1 199 lbs 76 Ovr 49 FR Jamaal Taylor 5-9 194 lbs 67 Ovr B-Back 34 SO Daniel Holt 6-3 234 lbs 80 Ovr 48 FR Bobby Fontaine 6-2 236 lbs 51 Ovr (Walk-On) Junior A-Back Ricky Kemp appears primed for his first 1000-yard season. Coach’s thoughts: “Just like at quarterback, our starting A-Backs return lots of starting experience. Ricky Kemp’s versatility to play either running back position allows our offense to use multiple formations and personnel groupings to keep the defense guessing. Jeremy Reyes is undersized but explosive. Tony Johnson is a redshirt freshman who we are very high on. He has a combination of size and speed and we want to get him the ball a lot. Wes Jones got some playing time last year, and he is being groomed for the future. We also have a couple of new freshman, Lorenzo Williams and Jamaal Taylor, who because of the depth we are planning to redshirt. We also have a couple of B-Backs who fit our offensive scheme. Daniel Holt has been a backup for a couple seasons but has worked hard to prepare for his opportunity. Backing him up is a walk-on, Bobby Fontaine. Because of the depth at both running back spots, the speed of our quarterbacks, and youth at wide receiver, we hope to run the ball even more this season. Expect a lot of flexbone.” Wide Receiver 13 SO Dan Morales 6-2 190 lbs 85 Ovr 15 SO Lionel Poole 6-2 212 lbs 81 Ovr 86 FR Brandon Barrett 5-10 173 lbs 78 Ovr 5 FR Brent Bracken 6-7 184 lbs 76 Ovr 83 FR Nick Mitchell 6-0 187 lbs 67 Ovr 81 FR Howard Reed 6-1 173 lbs 65 Ovr Tight End 88 SR Thomas Strickland 6-4 254 lbs 86 Ovr 85 SO Tim Sellers 6-4 248 lbs 81 Ovr 80 SO Jeremy Robertson 6-5 254 lbs 76 Ovr 87 FR Eddie Mason 6-3 228 lbs 74 Ovr Tight End Thomas Strickland leads an inexperienced receiving corps. Coach’s Thoughts: “Wide receiver is an area we have some question marks. Not only did we lose arguably the greatest receiver in school history in Andrew Utley, but we also graduated David Peoples, Michael Stone, and Travis Irby. The result is a lot of inexperience. Our returning wide receivers have 1 career catch! That catch was a touchdown by Dan Morales, who enters fall camp as the new #1 receiver. Lionel Poole is a tall guy who has the inside track to the other starting spot. The slot receiver is a fight between two guys right now. The first is Brandon Barrett, who is your typical shifty slot man. The other is incoming freshman Brent Bracken, who we think could be the steal of the recruiting season. He is 6-7 and is the newly crowned fastest member of the team, running a 4.4 forty yard dash. We only hope he can catch. He could be a matchup nightmare for defenses. We also have two more freshmen, Nick Mitchell and Howard Reed, who will add depth. That’s right, all of our wide receivers are freshmen or sophomores. “We are more pleased with what we have returning at Tight End. For one thing, we actually have a senior in Thomas Strickland, who will be entering his third season of starting. Tim Sellers and Jeremy Robertson are a couple big bodies who show their versatility in both blocking and receiving. Redshirt freshman Eddie Mason adds a different dimension as the fastest of our tight ends. Since we have depth at Tight End and not as much at receiver, expect more multiple tight end sets this season. We plan to use less of the spread offense and pound it out on the ground.” Offensive Tackles 77 SR Clifton Ryan 6-7 299 lbs 93 Ovr 70 SR Chad Perez 6-5 305 lbs 90 Ovr 64 FR Dwayne Howard 6-4 334 lbs 75 Ovr Offensive Guards 65 SR Grant Bradford 6-3 308 lbs 90 Ovr 73 SR Geoff Newby 6-4 288 lbs 90 Ovr 72 SR Charlie Mills 6-6 308 lbs 89 Ovr 63 JR Sean Lowe 6-4 333 lbs 87 Ovr 67 FR Dan Duckett 6-3 336 lbs 73 Ovr Centers 68 FR Lionel McMillan 6-6 343 lbs 78 Ovr 76 FR Mark Hall 6-4 290 lbs 65 Ovr (Walk-On) The Wildcat line hopes to lead A-Back Ricky Kemp to another double digit touchdown season. Coach’s Thoughts: “On the offensive line we have some talent, but just like the rest of the team, depth is becoming a concern. Our line will be led by our two tackles, Clifton Ryan and Chad Perez. They excel in pass blocking, and we only gave up 18 sacks as a team last season. Both are big time players who will be backed up by Dwayne Howard. At guard we have a couple experienced starters in Grant Bradford and Geoff Newby. Both say they enjoy the challenge of run blocking in our complex scheme. Charlie Mills and Sean Lowe are two upperclassman who give us some quality backups. Finally, we have a young guy in Dan Duckett who has shown some glimpses of the potential we hope to see in the future. We have two centers on the roster, one redshirt freshman and one true freshman walk-on. Lionel McMillan looks to be our starter, and we hope he remains healthy. The backup is Mark Hall, a walk-on who is a hard worker but not as physically gifted.” |

2011 Defense
Defensive Ends 97 JR Randall McIntosh 6-4 231 lbs 82 Ovr 94 FR Robert Cooper 6-3 228 lbs 70 Ovr 93 FR Spencer Johnson 6-3 290 lbs 70 Ovr 92 JR Antonio Harrison 6-4 258 lbs 49 Ovr (Walk-On) Defensive Tackles 96 JR James Franz 6-5 270 lbs 86 Ovr 91 SR Joe Stone 6-2 241 lbs 79 Ovr 98 JR Ron Hawkins 6-2 298 lbs 59 Ovr 99 FR Maurice Eaton 6-3 295 lbs 55 Ovr (Walk-On) Defensive tackle Joe Stone returns to spearhead the Wildcat defensive line. Coach’s Thoughts: “Looking at our defense, there are a lot of areas where we are short on depth. The defensive line and linebacker are especially two areas we don’t have a lot of bodies. Because of this, expect to see more 3-3-5 from us. We’ll keep certain aspects of our junk defense, but we will use more of the 3-3-5 look and lots of blitzes. We want more sacks, interceptions, fumbles, and big plays. We are going to make something happen, one way or another. At defensive end we have a mixture of the old and the new. Randall McIntosh is a guy who is a junior now and we expect to be the leader of the position. Two true freshmen and a walk-on are vying for the other spot. Robert Cooper and Spencer Johnson are both excited about the prospect of early playing time, and both show it by practicing hard. Antonio Harrison hasn’t seen the field yet, but we may see him used in our backup defensive units. Defensive tackle is an area where we are two-deep. James Franz and Joe Stone both started last year in our more traditional set, and expect to see them both rotate in an out. Ron Hawkins and Maurice Eaton are biding their time and learning the system.” Outside Linebackers 57 SR Kris Bostic 6-0 211 lbs 82 Ovr 42 JR Jason Anthony 6-3 201 lbs 78 Ovr 55 FR Andy Brown 6-1 240 lbs 72 Ovr 51 JR Anthony High 6-1 210 lbs 71 Ovr Middle Linebackers 50 SR Markell Bryan 6-3 235 lbs 92 Ovr 59 SO Andre Franklin 5-11 196 lbs 76 Ovr Coming off a second team All-American season, senior middle linebacker Markell Bryan has high expectations for his final season in Mechanicsburg. Coach’s Thoughts: “What can I say about Markell Bryan? He is one of the greatest players in this program’s history. He led the nation in tackles last season, and we expect him to be a presence all over the field this season. His backup will be Andre Franklin, who we are grooming to be a force next season. On the outside we return Kris Bostic, who seemed to have big games or disappear completely. We’re hoping for some more reliability from the senior. We also have Jason Anthony, who is undersized at 201 pounds but is a fighter. His speed is his best asset. For backups we have Andy Brown and Anthony High. Brown is a freshman who has showed a nose for the ball in fall practice and High is valuable on our special teams coverage units.” Cornerbacks 20 JR James Kent 5-10 186 lbs 90 Ovr 21 SR Booker Shelby 5-11 191 lbs 89 Ovr 22 SO Jordan Cooper 6-0 183 lbs 87 Ovr 24 FR Travis Palmer 5-10 166 lbs 82 Ovr 32 FR Lamar White 5-11 179 lbs 75 Ovr 45 FR Brad Dean 5-10 190 lbs 73 Ovr 26 FR Nate Lewis 6-2 185 lbs 71 Ovr Strong Safety 25 JR Anthony Martinez 6-1 182 lbs 86 Ovr 39 FR Curtis Harris 6-5 221 lbs 70 Ovr 37 FR Jason Miller 6-0 183 lbs 53 Ovr (Walk-On) Free Safety 36 SR Bryan Guerrero 6-1 190 lbs 85 Ovr 29 FR Greg McKenzie 6-2 195 lbs 74 Ovr 33 FR Eric Cox 6-3 208 lbs 54 Ovr (Walk-On) Senior cornerback Booker Shelby enters his third season starting in the Wildcat secondary. Coach’s Thoughts: “Cornerback is one area where we are very happy with our depth. We return both starters in James Kent and Booker Shelby. While they don’t have a ton of interceptions, they both hustle and are sure tacklers. Behind them we have Jordan Cooper, who showed flashes of brilliance as a freshman last season. Behind him we have four freshmen, who give us the versatility to use more players in the secondary. Travis Palmer, Lamar White, Brad Dean, and Nate Lewis come to practice everyday to work hard. They recognize they are all fighting for playing time, and the effort in practice is indicative of their position. At safety we lost two players who combined for 208 tackles last year. But we prefer to focus on what we have coming back. At strong safety Anthony Martinez leads the way. He got a decent amount of playing time last season and we’ll rely on him to get people situated in the right spots. Freshman Curtis Harris will be the primary backup. He’s huge by our standards, 6-5 and around 220 pounds, bigger than most of our linebackers. He has the chance to develop into something special. Third string will be Jason Miller, a walk-on who simply loves the program. Free safety finally gives Bryan Guerrero a chance to start and see significant playing time. In the limited time he’s gotten in the past he has excelled, so we expect nothing less this year. Greg McKenzie is a freshman who has a lot to learn quickly. He had some admissions issues getting onto campus and is a little behind in learning the defense. Finally, we have yet another walk-on, Eric Cox, who flies around the practice field whenever he gets the chance.” Specialists Improvement in kickoff coverage became one of the highlights of the Wildcat season. 16 SR Jacob Bell 6-5 212 lbs 82 Ovr 89 FR Matt Bryant 6-4 199 lbs 69 Ovr Coach’s Thoughts: “Well, our kickers we expect to kick the ball. Our punters punt it. That’s about it.” |

Wildcats Flatten Falcons 55-20 #25 Mech (1-0) 10-21-10-14-55 BGSU (0-1) 0-7-0-13-20 Mechanicsburg fans welcomed back their Wildcats when freshman wide receiver Brent Bracken made his first career reception- that just happened to go for a touchdown. The 2011 football season kicked off in rainy Bowling Green for the Mechanicsburg Wildcats. A grizzled offensive line interspersed with newfound playmakers on offense and defense led the Wildcats to victory. Mechanicsburg saw the first career touchdowns from freshman wide receiver Brent Bracken, freshman A-Back Tony Johnson, sophomore wide receiver Lionel Poole, and freshman quarterback Arthur Vaughn. Freshman corner Lamar White was targeted early by Bowling Green, but he responded with 11 tackles, including this de-cleater. He also added his first career interception late in the game. Key Stat: 342. Mechanicsburg outrushed Bowling Green 342-58. The Wildcats ground game was the key to victory. Game Ball: Wildcat offensive line. Mechanicsburg’s men up front continually opened gaping holes for their runners. Seeing Falcons strewn across the ground was a common sight on a rainy Saturday night. Sweet Revenge as Wildcats down Tigers 30-10 Aub (0-1) 7-0-3-0-10 #25 Mech (2-0) 7-10-6-7-30 Freshman wide receiver Brandon Barrett hauls in his first career touchdown between double coverage. Mechanicsburg avenged last season’s loss on the plains of Auburn by upending the Tigers 30-10 on a beautiful night in Pennsylvania. The Wildcat youngsters once again stepped up and spurred the Mechanicsburg offense, including touchdowns from freshman wide receiver Brandon Barrett and freshman A-Back Tony Johnson. Mechanicsburg spent about half of the game running out of the flexbone, using misdirection and speed against the Auburn defense. Whenever the Auburn offense did get on track, several mistakes were made by Tigers quarterback Tyrik Rollison. The Wildcats continue their difficult schedule with several more important games. The next four include games at Alabama, at Penn State, at UConn, and home versus rival West Virginia. Freshman defensive end Robert Cooper scoops up a fumble from Auburn quarterback Tyrik Rollison. Key Stat: 222. The Wildcats outrushed the Tigers by 222 yards. Mechanicsburg carried 53 times for 235 yards, while Auburn had 16 rushing attempts for 13 yards. Game Ball: Tony Johnson. The freshman A-Back came up big with 13 carries for 68 yards and two crucial touchdowns. The Wildcat playcalling kept the Tigers guessing. Here some misdirection gives A-Back Tony Johnson an open route to paydirt. Coach’s Quote: “You stay classy.” |

Running Away with It #22 Mech (2-1) 3-14-7-3-27 #6 Ala (2-0) 14-7-0-7-28 Harry the Wildcat Trapper can’t bear to watch as Alabama returns a fumble for a touchdown. Talking to the Mechanicsburg coaches before the game, the one thing they wanted to avoid was falling behind early on the road against Alabama. Well, down 21-3 early in the second quarter was exactly what the Wildcats wanted to avoid. However, the Wildcats were able to turn around momentum, and Anthony Martinez returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give Mechanicsburg the lead. The Crimson Tide regained the lead, then Mechanicsburg quarterback Lawrence Shaw connected with freshman wide receiver Brent Bracken on a 38-yard bomb to put Mechanicsburg in field goal range with 10 seconds left. However, senior kicker Jacob Bell’s game-winning field goal try doinked off the right upright as time expired, allowing the Tuscaloosa faithful to breathe a sigh of relief. Mechanicsburg quarterback Lawrence Shaw used a great block from diminutive A-Back Jeremy Reyes to scoot into the endzone. Key Stat: 25. Mechanicsburg quarterback Lawrence Shaw completed only 25% of his passes, finishing 7 for 28. Game Ball: Markell Bryan and Trent Richardson. Their epic battle did this great game justice. Bryan finished with 18 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 interception. Richardson was a true workhorse for the Crimson Tide, carrying 40 times for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alabama and running back Trent Richardson ended up getting the better of Markell Bryan and the Wildcats. Coach’s Quote: “I immediately regret this decision.” |

Happy Valley- For Penn State Fans Battle for the Keystone State Rivalry Game Mech (2-2) 0-7-6-8-21 #22 PSU (3-1) 7-10-14-0-31 One of the few highlights for the Wildcats was this beautiful 33-yard touchdown run from freshman A-Back Tony Johnson. Mechanicsburg fell for the second year in a row to Penn State. The Nittany Lions used a powerful run game to quell the Wildcats in sloppy conditions. Two bright spots for Mechanicsburg included one freshman and on senior. On offense, freshman A-Back Tony Johnson continued his early season sparkling play, rushing 14 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt. On defense, senior middle linebacker Markell Bryan accounted for 13 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and one sack. Mechanicsburg was on the verge of getting back into the game late in the 3rd quarter, when, on a 3rd and 7 play, Penn State running back Stephfon Green set off on a backbreaking 85-yard touchdown run. Senior middle linebacker Markell Bryan celebrates his sack of Penn State quarterback Kevin Newsome. Key Stat: 584. Penn State racked up 584 yards of total offense, combining 323 rushing yards with 261 passing yards. Game Ball: Stephfon Green. 37 rushes for 267 yards (7.2 avg) and 2 touchdowns. This hole typified the type of day Stephfon Green had running the football against a weak Wildcat rush defense. Coach’s Quote: “Come to Penn State!” |
