Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 23rd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1, 0-0 Big East) got revenge on the Colorado Buffaloes (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) today as the Mountaineers absolutely rolled over the Buffaloes in the second half, outscoring them 31-13 in the final two frames of play. The Buffaloes upset West Virginia 17-14 last year in overtime in Boulder, but that was not to be this year as it was all Mountaineers.

West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown was knocked out midway though the third quarter, but it didn't slow the Mountaineer offense down one bit, as the offense came back with a resurgence after last week's blooper at Auburn.

Coley White, Pat White's younger brother, came in for the injured Brown and did a serviceable job, throwing for 34 yards and rushing for another 14. However, the real offensive firepower came from the rushing game, where the Mountaineers torched Colorado in the second half, reminiscent of the Rodriguez era of West Virginia football. Noel Devine ran for 113 yards and a touchdown while freshman Tavon Austin ran for 90 yards and two touchdowns on only nine touches.

"Tavon [Austin] has been big for us this year," stated West Virginia running backs coach Chris Beatty. "He has been improving nicely over these first few games and I think that by the end of the season, he and Noel [Devine] will essentially be sharing touches. Tavon has a bright future ahead of him."

Tavon Austin's 51 yard scamper down the sideline for a touchdown put the Mountaineers up 34-13 late in the third quarter, which essentially put the game out of reach for the Buffaloes.

West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown is expected to be back for next week's game at Syracuse.

Syracuse, NY (AP) - The 22nd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (4-1, 1-0 Big East) opened up Big East Conference play in a big way this afternoon as the Mountaineers absolutely blew out the Syracuse Orange (2-4, 0-2 Big East) 45-6.

West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown, who sustained an injury last week, was originally expected to play in this game, but was listed as "questionable" at game time.

Mountaineer head coach Doc Holliday elected to sit Brown, however, since this was expected to be an easy win and the coach did not want his starting quarterback to sustain any long-lasting injuries.

With Eugene Smith redshirting this season, the Mountaineers turned to Coley White, Pat White's younger brother. White, a redshirt freshman was fantastic and was very reminiscent of his older brother, Pat. White threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns while also running for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only five carries. The most impressive play of the day for the freshman was midway through the second quarter, when White faked a handoff to halfback Tavon Austin and instead cut it back to the left, breaking a tackle and outrunning everyone else as White scored a 59 yard touchdown run, the first touchdown the young quarterback has ever scored.

"[Coley White] was fantastic today," stated offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jeff Mullen. "He's been fantastic in practice, so I was confident in his ability to start and win this game, which allowed us to give Jarrett [Brown] another week of rest to heal.

"Coley will give Eugene [Smith] a run for his money next year for the starting quarterback job."

Sophomore wide receiver, and former quarterback, Bradley Starks had the best game of his career today as he caught five passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns, including a 47 yard touchdown for the Mountaineers' first score.

Jarrett Brown will be back next week for the Mountaineers' game at home against Marshall. The Thundering Herd will be the Mountaineers' final regular season non-conference opponent of the 2009 season.

Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 20th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 Big East) had their hands full against a Marshall (5-2, 3-0 C-USA) that entered the game with a record of 5-1, their lone loss being a close one against Virginia Tech.

The Thundering Herd jumped all over the unsuspecting Mountaineers early on and held a 27-14 lead with five seconds remaining in the first half after Marshall had just tacked on another seven points. However, on the ensuing kickoff, the pendulum swung to the Mountaineers' side as Noel Devine took the kickoff to the house 91 yards to make the score 27-21 Marshall at halftime.

Marshall would not score a single time in the second half. The West Virginia offense was dominant in the second half, by any means, either, but it was good enough to put up a touchdown and a pair of field goals to give the Mountaineers a close 34-27 win over the rival Thundering Herd.

"Our guys seemed a bit shell-shocked that Marshall came out as hard as they did and they just flat out dominated us early on," stated West Virginia head coach Doc Holliday. "It reminded me of last year's game against ECU, in a way. However, unlike that ECU game in which we fell flat on our face and lost 21-3, this time and we picked ourselves up and were able to get a win out of it. It may not be an impressive, awe-inspiring win, but a win is a win and I'll take it, especially over our rivals from Huntington."

The Mountaineers have now wrapped up their non-conference schedule and will return home next week to take on the Connecticut Huskies, who have had a rough year thus far as the team continues to struggle due to the loss of Donald Brown to the NFL.
