Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (2-0, 0-0 Big East) continued to flaunt their offensive dominance this afternoon against the Maryland Terrapins as the Mountaineers racked up 469 yards of total offense on their way to a 44-30 win over the Maryland Terrapins (1-1, 0-0 ACC).

However, once again, the Mountaineer defense allowed their opponent to allow over 400 yards of total offense as the Terrapins recorded 432 yards of total offense, including 262 passing yards as the secondary struggled.

Noel Devine was the difference-maker in this one as he rushed for 193 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on 23 carries, narrowly missing out on his first 200+ yard rushing game after recording 206 yards against Marshall last week.

Eugene Smith recorded the first interception of his young career today, but he still had a solid day, throwing for 193 yards. Smith also showcased his mobility as he ran the ball five times for 51 yards. His favorite target was Bradley Starks, who caught four passes for 74 yards.

The Mountaineers' win can be acredited to their strong second quarter, where they outscored the Terrapins 21-0. WVU was behind 7-3 coming into the quarter, but left for the locker rooms with a 24-7 victory, giving the 'Eers some breathing room. The breathing room came in use as the Terps recovered with a strong second half and got within 37-30 with two minutes left. However, Noel Devine scored on a three yard run with under a minute remaining to seal the deal as the Mountaineers won by two touchdowns.

Baton Rouge, LA (AP) - The 11th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (3-0, 0-0 Big East) pulled off a huge win against the 18th-ranked LSU Tigers (2-1, 0-0 SEC) tonight in prime time in front of a national ESPN audience.

This game was one of the most exciting games thus far this season and will likely be played on ESPN Classic's "Classic Game of the Week" tomorrow morning.

The Mountaineers won ugly, turning the ball over five times to LSU's two, and being out-gained 477-378 on offense, but still somehow came away with the overtime victory.

"We made the yards we gained count," stated West Virginia head coach Jeff Mullen. "They didn't. That's all there is to it."

Eugene Smith had an ugly game as he was playing his first game in a truly hostile environment, tossing four interceptions, but he still led his team on a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, setting up Tyler Bitancurt with a 37 yard field goal. Bitancurt nailed it with 32 seconds remaining to tie it up. LSU didn't manage to score with the 32 remaining seconds and the game went to overtime.

LSU opened overtime, but only managed three yards of offense, getting to the 22 yard line before being forced to attempt a field goal. Josh Jasper lined up for a 37 yard field goal. Jasper was 1-3 thus far in the game, but he hit a crucial 50 yard field goal which gave the Tigers a 24-21 lead late in the fourth quarter. Jasper missed it wide left, making him 1-4 on the day and being one of the main reasons the Tigers failed to win the game.

"It's hard to win when you leave nine points on the table," muttered LSU head coach Les Miles.

The WVU offense went three-and-out, as well, setting up Tyler Bitancurt with a difficult 44 yard field goal. Bitancurt put the crowd, the noise, and the pressure aside as he slammed the ball through the uprights and into the field goal net to win the game for the Mountaineers and sending the crowd at Death Valley home dejected.

Blacksburg, VA (AP) - Oh, how sweet it was. The 8th-ranked Mountaineers torched the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-2, 0-1 ACC) for 42 second-quarter points, nearly setting the record of 52 points set by Mount Union three years ago. This was the first time these two rivals have played each other since 2005 and Virginia Tech had won the last two before the rivalry ended two years after the Hokies bolted to the ACC, so a 29 point win is just what the doctor ordered for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers owe their large scoring output to 575 yards of total offense, 824 total yards, and four turnovers by Virginia Tech inside their own 40 yard line, all of which led to scores, including an interception return for a touchdown.

The Mountaineer defense continued to be a cause of concern, however, as the Mountaineers let the Hokies reel up 499 yards of total offense and 41 points in the first three quarters before the WVU defense shut down the Hokies in the fourth quarter and shut them out. WVU has allowed their opponent to gained over 400 yards of total offense in all four games this season and if they do not get things fixed quick, it will inevitably come back to bite them. You can't expect to put up 70 points on the board every game.

After struggling on the road agains LSU in Death Valley last week, throwing four interceptions, Eugene Smith had the game of his life today, throwing for a career-high 323 yards and four touchdowns. And, perhaps most importantly, he didn't throw a single interception.

Heisman candidate Noel Devine was no slouch either, as he carried the ball 18 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns, at a clip of 8.3 yards per carry. Throw in 106 receiving yards and a touchdown reception and Devine's performance looks that much more impressive. And throw in that this was against a stout Virginia Tech defense, which won the ACC last season, and it looks downright amazing.

Wes Johnson also caugh four passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt-freshman Logan Heastie caught 3 passes for a career-high 54 yards and two touchdowns while fellow frosh Stedham Bailey also recorded a career-high 59 yards receiving and a touchdown on three receptions.
