Bungle Fever - Fixing the Bengals

Futility

In 1990 the Bengals went 9-7 and won their division. They would beat Kansas City in the wildcard round before dropping the divisional game to the Raiders. That was the last time the Bengals won a playoff game. In 2005 they went 11-5 under Carson Plamer but lost in the first round of the playoffs when he was injured against the Steelers. Between 1990 and 2005 the Bengals never did better than .500. In that stretch they had 8 seasons with 5 or less wins. 2006 saw the Cats drop back to .500 before going 7-9 in 2007 and 4-11-1 in 2008.

One issue that has plagued the team as of late are character issues with several members of the team, signings of Tank Johnson and Roy Williams call into question the intelligence of the members of the front office.

The biggest problem the Bengals have had is terrible drafting. 17 players drafted by them in the last 5 drafts are no longer in the league.

A New Era

Following a 3-13 campaign in 2009 team owner Mike Brown decided to sell the team before their value plummeted anymore. After meeting league approval and insuring everyone he had no intention of moving the team out of state Dee Snutz was allowed to purchase the team. Snutz promised a new era would soon begin in Cincy.

Getting Down to Business

Before the ink had even dried on Snutz ownership of the Bengals he began making changes. The entire staff, from the front office to the water boy were let go, including the full coaching staff. Determined to not repeat the draft woes of the past Snutz hired draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. to act as the head of scouting and as the Assistant to the GM, a position Snutz would fill himself.

Snutz then began filling Coaching vacancies. Norv Turner was hired as Head Coach. Ron Rivera got the nod at Defensive Coordinator. Brian Daboll was brought in to head up the offense and Steve Crosby will handle the Special Teams. Daboll and Crosby were brought in because of their experience with the Patriots, a team everyone wants to mirror. Turner brings veteran leadership while Rivera's aggressive 4-3 scheme will bring fear to Cincy.

The Bengals are slated to pick 2nd in the upcoming draft. The addition of Kiper is sure to improve their success.

Cleaning House

With the free agent resigning period upon us Snutz continued to flush the team of unwanted personell, allowing Roy Williams and Tank Johnson to walk along with 17 other players, allowing him to begin molding the team to his liking quickly. The draft would be very important.

Free Agency and the Draft

Only LB Pierre Woods was signed prior to the draft, allowing much freedom in rookie selection.

Snutz traded the Bengals 2nd overall pick and 5th round pick to the Lions in exchange for their 1st picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th rounds.

Bengals 2010 Draft

2-1 WR Dravannti Jordan Notre Dame
2-2 G Scott Burke Stanford
3-1 FS Ruben Adams LA Tech
3-2 MLB Freddie Bates Alabama
4-1 HB Kemnavus Singletary Bethune Cookman
4-2 OLB Joseph Ritchie Virginia Tech
6-1 DE Antjuan Tyson Boston College
6-2 C Cole Burdetsky USC
7-1 OLB Di-Jon Hargrove West Virginia
7-2 OT Devante Price USC

Following the draft the Bengals signed OLs Evan Mathis and Max Jean-Gilles as well as QB Tarvaris Jackson, FB Korey Hall and CBs Kevin Dockery and Stanford Routt to fill the roster.
