Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)
Visits starting to take shape
Ducks using big games to host big recruits EUGENE, OR - The Ducks have gotten a lucky draw this year, and they're hoping to take advantage of it. In a year that features a new head coach (Chip Kelly), a new ace recruiter (Brian Kudron) and a new sense of urgency on the recruiting trail, the Ducks have two golden opportunities to showcase their program to star recruits - Halloween night against #1 USC, and the Civil War on December 3rd against Oregon State. While there are other enticing dates - such as this upcoming weekend against Cal and November 14th against Arizona State - the Oregon coaches are clearly circling the USC and Oregon State games as the top two recruiting weekends of the year, and visits for those weekends are starting to take shape. Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)
#8 California @ #7 Oregon Autzen Stadium Eugene, OR September 26, 2009 Ducks' defense picks off Bears It was a mixed bag, but Oregon gets it done against Cal EUGENE, OR - They gave up 530 yards of offense, including 415 passing yards to a backup quarterback. And it was deemed an excellent performance by their head coach. After a week of uncertainty because of three games filled by defensive breakdowns, the Oregon defense rose up and crushed Cal, racking up 10 more sacks - many on busted screen plays - and forced seven turnovers (while giving it away four times themselves) in a 38-31 win that was not as close as the final score indicated and featured nine rushing touchdowns by eight different players. Things could not have started worse for the Ducks. Cal took the opening drive right down the field and punched it in. Jeremiah Masoli's first pass was intercepted, and Cal capitalized with another touchdown. But Oregon took out Cal QB Kevin Riley on the Bears' first series, ending his day early and forcing sophomore Brock Mansion into play. Mansion performed decently, throwing for 415 yards, but the Ducks intercepted him four times, three by Talmadge Jackson, who capitalized on the Bears refusing to throw at Walter Thurmond III. Along with Jackson, T.J. Ward had a brilliant day in the secondary. In addition to a dozen tackles, Ward delivered multiple brutal hits, two of which jarred the ball loose and created turnovers. On offense, the Ducks are still rough around the edges. Masoli completed only 50% of his throws, threw for only 91 yards, and was picked off twice. He also lost a fumble and was limited to 43 yards rushing, as Cal's 3-4 defense clamped down on the zone read. LaMichael James had a tough 111 yards on 28 carries, but it was wide receiver Jamere Holland who provided the big play in the running game, lining up in the "Wild Duck" formation, faking a handoff to James and then following him through the hole before running to daylight for a 66 yard touchdown in the second quarter. In snuffing out their three-game losing streak to Cal, the Ducks have set themselves up for a possible and probable 7-0 start before facing #1 USC on Halloween Night in Autzen Stadium.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)
King stops by Autzen
Nation's #1 DE has all his visits set EUGENE, OR - Saturday's emotion-packed 38-31 victory over Cal got the Oregon Ducks off on the right foot in conference play on the field. Off the field, it may have gotten them off on the right foot in their pursuit of the nation's most coveted defensive end. Local star Michael King of Portland Jesuit made the two hour drive south to Eugene to attend the Ducks' Pac-10 opener against the Bears, and he came away extremely impressed. "It was fun," the five-star defensive end said. "The fans were great, just an awesome atmosphere, they were yelling the whole game. And it was a good game. Oregon's defense really gets after the quarterback, and I like that." It's an added bonus that King is a local player and could visit on his own dime; a bonus that may prove crucial, as the Jesuit star has planned his five official visits. "The five that will get visits, as of now, are Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, and Michigan," King said. "I'm visiting Texas in a couple weeks when they play Oklahoma. That'll be an interesting visit, because the game is a neutral site, and it's two teams that are really after me, but that'll be my Texas visit. The Oklahoma visit will be for their rivalry game (with Oklahoma State) on November 28. Before that, I'll check out Michigan on November 21 when they play Ohio State, and on November 14th I'll be at USC when they play Stanford. And I'll probably be back here at Oregon for the Civil War against Oregon State. That game is a huge deal in this state, so I definitely want to be there." When asked what he was looking for in a school, King made Oregon fans smile. "I want the whole package really, but there are a couple factors I'm looking at more than most. I want to play in a big-time conference, you know, a BCS conference. I'd like to play early, but that's really up to me, I know whatever coach I play for is going to be fair. I understand that if I want to play early it's up to me to put the work in. And I'm really interested in checking out the athletic facilities and all that. I want to see that the school I'm going to is equipped to help me maximize my potential." That last one should make Oregon fans feel good, as the Ducks' facilities are second to none in the nation. Finally, King talked about returning to Oregon unofficially again. "I'll probably be here when they play USC on Halloween. The coaches have talked to me about doing it and if I'd be able to do it on my own, you know, unofficially. They're really emphasizing that game, so I hope I'll be able to make it and meet some of the other recruits." |

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)
Washington State @ #6 Oregon Autzen Stadium Eugene, OR October 3, 2009 Ducks fly through the rain and Wazzu Offense explodes after halftime in a monsoon at Autzen EUGENE, OR - This was the complete effort Chip Kelly was looking for. Now let's hope they replicate it against an opponent other than the worst team in the Pac-10. The Ducks clicked in all three phases of the game, scoring 37 points after halftime, shutting down Washington State's offense and scoring on special teams in a 43-9 rout in the middle of a non-stop torrential downpour. Jeremiah Masoli was limited in the passing game because of the relentless rain, but he threw two scores in the 4th quarter, and found a new receiving target, as JUCO transfer Tyrece Gaines, who saw time in the second half against Cal, caught eight passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Andre Crenshaw seemed to pull ahead in the running game, as he average seven yards a pop (13 carries, 91 yards) compared to 1.7 for LaMichael James (9 for 16). After four straight weeks in the friendly confines of Autzen Stadium, the Ducks hit the road for the next two games, starting next week in Pasadena against UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)
Elite TE checks out Eugene
Nation's #31 player comes away impressed by Ducks EUGENE, OR - Ed Dickson is certainly an elite tight end and is a huge component of the Ducks' passing game. Unfortunately, he's a senior, and there is no surefire replacement lined up. Chip Kelly and the Oregon coaching staff are looking at a couple options in recruiting to remedy that situation, and Saturday against Washington State they hosted one of those options as 4-star tight end Dane Fuller of Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas officially visited Eugene. "I had a great time," the nation's #2 tight end reported. "It didn't stop raining the whole time I was there, but that didn't bother me. I'm from the desert, I looked forward to seeing rain for a change. And that didn't stop the coaches from showing me around. One of the things I wanted to see was what it was like just being a student on campus, and I got to see that. It's an awesome place, really nice looking." After spending the day touring the campus, Fuller took in the actual game at Autzen between the Ducks and Cougars. "It was awesome. Even with the rain, the place was packed and the crowd was LOUD. That place was rocking, and it never stopped. I like that, because I could see it having an effect on the other team, and if I went to Oregon I'd be on the good end of all that noise. And they involve their tight end in the offense, (Ed) Dickson is one of the primary targets when they throw the ball, and that's important to me." While Oregon put itself into a great position, there is a long way to go, as Fuller is just starting the process of visits. "Yeah, Oregon was first," he said. "I'm visiting Wisconsin in a couple weeks, Penn State after that, and UCLA and Arizona State near the end of the season." In case any of those visits diminishes the Ducks in Fuller's eyes, the Oregon coaches have a Plan 1A just in case - the nation's #1 tight end, 5-star James Johnson of Kingsgate, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. While Fuller leans more toward being a blocking tight end at 6'2, 257, Johnson, the #13 player overall in the country, is a pass receiving monster at 6'5, 232. Johnson has visited planned so far to Oregon, Washington, Ohio State and Texas, but he has gone on the record saying the Ducks and Huskies are tied at the top of his list at this time. |
