Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

#5 Oregon @ UCLA
Rose Bowl
Pasadena, CA
October 10, 2009

Two steps forward, one step back
Ducks' offense bails out the defense in Pasadena

PASADENA, CA - Ducks fans should probably get used to this kind of thing.

Oregon's offense showed up in spades against UCLA, racking up 578 yards and 53 points. And that was enough, but the defense had a near-complete breakdown, surrendering 602 yards of offense to the Bruins and five touchdowns to UCLA's redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince.

The Ducks won, 53-35, but head coach Chip Kelly knows there are problems that need fixing.

"We expect to contend for the conference championship," Kelly said. "And to do that, we need to excel in all facets of the game, not just some."

Jeremiah Masoli had a superb day at quarterback for the Ducks, throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns while running for 89 and two more scores. Andre Crenshaw got the start at tailback and ran for 176 yards. Jamere Holland continues to be a playmaker as well, running for 35 yards on three carries with a touchdown and catching four passes for 82 yards and two more scores.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

Way too late to this.

Virtual Nick Aliotti is like a ghost in the machine for the Ducks in this game.

Any thoughts on changing up the defensive scheme in year 2?

#4 Oregon @ #23 Washington
Husky Stadium
Seattle, WA
October 24, 2009

Huskies rise up to bite Ducks
Blown opportunities lead to first loss of '09

SEATTLE, WA - Even after blowing it in regulation, the game was right there for the taking for the Oregon Ducks. And they failed to take it.

Washington missed an extra point in overtime, giving them a precarious six point lead. But it held up, as the Huskies stopped Jeremiah Masoli on 4th and 2 inside the 10, preserving a stunning 34-28 overtime victory and ending a five-year losing streak to the Ducks.

Oregon jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, but then saw its offense stall against a surprisingly stingy Washington defense. The Ducks broke through in the 4th to claim a 28-21 lead, but their own defense let them down once again, as Jake Locker led the Huskies down the field and hit DeAndre Goodwin down the right sideline for a 23 yard touchdown with 33 seconds left after the Ducks secondary blew the coverage and turned Goodwin loose. The Ducks defense was a disappointment once again, allowing 515 yards of offense against their Pacific Northwest rivals. Locker completed only 18 passes but threw for 311 yards, while Chris Polk was a workhorse, carrying the ball 37 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns, including the winner in OT.

"This is a setback," UO coach Chip Kelly said. "In a rivalry game, emotions are high and the talent level can be evened out pretty quickly. We didn't do a good job matching their intensity, and they made us pay. But we've got to bounce back, because more tests lie ahead."

The "tests" Kelly is referring to start next week, when undefeated USC visits Autzen Stadium under the lights on Halloween Night.
