Week 7 Game of the Week Preview: #22 Auburn @ #5 Arkansas

#22 Auburn, #5 Arkansas set to tangle over SEC West driver's seat
NCAA News

Another important SEC matchup is on tap this weekend, as #22 Auburn travels to take on #5 Arkansas with 1st-place in the SEC West on the line.

Auburn was featured in the Game of the Week a few weeks ago when they traveled to Florida, but they came home dejected after suffering a 38-24 setback. The Tigers are still deep in the SEC title hunt, but they have another tough road task just ahead.

Auburn will have to figure out how to stop the Razorbacks' delicious backfield tandem of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Jones is coming off an injury, but is expected to play a major role in the offense. McFadden, a Preseason Heisman candidate, has fallen off the national map a bit but responded well last week against FCS opponent Chattanooga. McFadden diced up the Mocs for 282 yards and 3 TDs, winning SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors in the process.

It will be a great battle, but it's hard to pick the winner. Arkansas has looked very impressive so far but really hasn't played anybody worthwhile. Auburn, on the other hand, looks battle-tested and could bring the fire right out of the gates. It will be a barnburner, but I think Arkansas' 1-2 punch at tailback helps bring home a win.

Auburn Ratings Arkansas

10/13 3:30 pm --- Week 7 Game of the Week: #22 Auburn @ #5 Arkansas

#5 Arkansas outlasts #22 Auburn to stay unbeaten thanks to missed FG in 3OT
NCAA News

Maybe we should change the phrase to "Wild, Wild South".

#5 Arkansas and #22 Auburn gave us quite a show this weekend, going into 3 OTs. In the end, it was the Razorbacks that pulled it out, thanks to a missed field goal in the final overtime period. Auburn kicker Zach Kutch shanked the game-tying attempt wide left and Arkansas stayed undefeated, while the Tigers drop to 4-3.

It was a wild back-and-forth battle that had an explosive beginning and an exciting finish. The game featured 6 ties and 7 lead changes, plus some every balanced offensive attacks.

Auburn jumped out to a 14-7 lead, but Arkansas answered back and led 21-14 after a crazy 1st quarter. Auburn RB Brad Lester caught and ran for a TD each, while Arkansas got 2 TD passes from QB Casey Dick and a 7-yard TD jolt by RB Felix Jones, who returned from injury this week.

Auburn settled down the tempo in the 2nd quarter and re-claimed the lead, holding a 24-21 advantage at the break. Lester scored on a 5-yard scamper and Kutch nailed a field goal in the period.

In the 3rd quarter, the lead changed twice. Dick threw his 3rd TD pass of the day to give Arkansas a 28-24 lead, but Lester answered with another 5-yard TD plunge to put the Tigers back up 31-28.

In an odd change of pace, the 4th quarter was actually very sluggish. The Razorbacks finally managed to tie the game with only 2:01 left on a 34-yard field goal.

In the 1st overtime, Felix Jones scored another TD on the ground but Auburn QB Brandon Cox answered back with his 2nd TD pass to send the game into another series. The teams traded field goals in the 2nd OT.

In the 3rd OT, Arkansas took the lead at 44-41 behind another field goal. Auburn couldn't get a game-winning TD, but still had a shot to tie the game again. Unfortunately, Kutch's attempt missed and Arkansas breathed a big sigh of relief.

Jones ran for a game-high 213 yards and 2 TDs on 33 carries, filling in for Darren McFadden, who left the game early with an injury. QB Dick threw for 209 yards and 3 TDs, but was picked off twice.

Lester was a major thorn for the Arkansas defense, totaling 190 yards from scrimmage (103 rush) and scored 4 TDs. QB Cox threw for 289 yards and 2 TDs on 23-of-41 passing.

This is Auburn's 2nd loss against a ranked SEC opponent this season.
