Bear Down Arizona: Arizona Wildcats (NCAA 10)
Arizona Wildcats Review Since joining the Pacific Ten (Pac-10) conference in 1978, the Wildcats have only won the title once (1993 under Dick Tomey) and participated in one January bowl game (Fiesta Bowl win over Miami; same year as conference title). The Wildcats would go on a 1ten year skid after winning the Holiday Bowl vs Nebraska in 1998. They have outdone rival Arizona State in “The Big Game”, winning the Territorial Cup in seventeen of the last thirty games since both teams joined the Pac-10, although seven of the last ten have gone to ASU. Arizona would finally be back in a bowl game following a victory over the Sun Devils at the conclusion of the 2008 season, beating BYU 31-21.
Mike Stoops has been the head coach of Arizona since 2004 and so far has recorded a record of 27-33 and 1-0 in bowl games. He has consistently improved during his first stint as a head coach, taking the Wildcats from 3-8 to 8-5 in the matter of a few seasons. Stoops still does not have the amount of respect garnered that programs such as Pac-10 powerhouse USC or his older brother's, Bob Stoops', Oklahoma Sooners. The president, athletic director, and several boosters have their mind set that Stoops is their leader and will stay for atleist a few more seasons.
Arizona has the talent to be contender for the Pac-10 title and a BCS bid, they will need to overcome USC, Oregon, and Cal; not to mention a passionate game against Arizona State if they want to take the next step towards being a national power. The team is built for a two or three year stint, with young players either starting (SO Bryson Beirne and SO Robert Golden) or subbing in for starters ( SO Keola Antonin and SO Devin Veal). Both the offensive line and the defensive front seven are senior heavy and will need replacements soon.
