Preseason Week 1 Cowboys at Raiders

Arlington, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys opened up their preseason play with a sloppy loss to the Oakland Raiders, 24-20. The first team played the entire first half, looking sharp for the most part. Tony Romo was very impressive throughout the first half going 14 for 17 and 151 yards. Marion Barber wasn't spectacular, gaining 48 yards on 15 carries. Barber was knocked out of the game early in the first quarter but returned to play the rest of the first half just shortly after.
The first team defense played as expected in holding the Raiders to 10 points in the first half. The defensive unit gave up one big play that led to the Raiders only TD in the first half. JeMarcus Russell hit Schilens for a 79 yard bomb in the second quarter. The defensive front held the Raider running game in check, but was unable to pressure Russell. This is an area the Cowboys will definitely look to improve upon before the regular season begins.
Wade Phillips brought in the second team to begin the second half. Immediately, Jon Kitna led the offense down the field and hit Roy Williams for a 62 yard pass for a TD. This was the only impressive highlight of the second half for the Cowboys offense. The Raider defense shut down the running game and held the Cowboys offense in check the rest of the game. Sam McGee was brought in to play the 4th quarter and quite honestly looked pretty unimpressive. McGee missed open receivers all night, even missing a wide open Roy Williams in the endzone.
Dallas had a 20-17 lead late in the 3rd quarter when Bruce Gradkowski threw an 80 yard bomb to Watkins for the go ahead TD. This gave the Raiders a 24-17 lead, and they would hold on from there, taking game one of the preason.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys will open up new Cowboys Stadium in week 2 of the preaseaon against the Tennessee Titans. Expect the starters to play about the same amount of time as game one, the first half. The unimpressive looking second and third stringers will look to show they are better than the way they performed in week one.

Preseason Week 2

Arlington, Texas -- Well, this game was definitely not what the Cowboys expected when the Tennessee Titans came to town for the grand opening of Cowboys Stadium. The Cowboys were absolutely embarrassed by the Titans, losing 41-3. The Cowboys could find no rhythm on either side of the ball. Add to that 5 turnovers and it spells disaster.

The offense for the Cowboys apparently stayed in Oakland last week. Romo turned the ball over 4 times, throwing 4 INT. Add to that the running game was nowhere to be found, and the Cowboys put up a measly 3 points on the Titans defense.

The defense was not much better for the Cowboys. The running back tandem of Lendale White and Chris Johnson torched the Cowboys defense for 187 yards total and 3 TD's. The Cowboy secondary looked especially bad missing tackles left and right.

Dallas also had a couple early scares in the first quarter, as both Marion Barber and Felix Jones had to miss some of the first quarter due to injury. Both returned however, but with the Cowboys trailing, the running game was abandoned.
The Cowboys aren't going to panic yet, as it's just week 2 of the preseason, but if this keeps up there will have to be some adjustments and changes made.

Next week the San Francisco 49ers come to Arlington in a week 3 preseason matchup.

Preseason Week 3

Arlington, Texas -- The Cowboys finally get their first win of the preseason today, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 33-14. Dallas was clicking on all cylinders for once in this preseason. They looked to put last week's embarrassing performance behind them, and they did just that.

The Cowboys put up 23 points in the first half on the back of Marion Barber. Barber had a 14 and a 20 yard TD run to put the Cowboys out front for good. Chauncey Washington added a 19 yard TD run late in the 4th quarter as well. The rest of the scoring came from the foot of Nick Folk.

Tony Romo looked to put last week's terrible performance behind him and he did just that. Romo went a solid 13/18 for 157 yards and no turnovers. The ground game for Dallas looked strong behind solid offensive line play. Add to that the key defensive plays of the game from Mike Jenkins and Terrence Newman and the Cowboys made this game look easy.

Preseason Week 4
Arlington, Texas -- The Cowboys finished up their preseason schedule today against the Minnesota Vikings in losing fashion. The Vikings beat the Cowboys 31-21. This loss drops the Cowboys to 1-3 to finish this preseason. Not quite what Dallas was expecting, but they are remaining positive for the upcoming season.

Turnovers once again ruined any chance of a victory today for Dallas. The Vikings defense returned two interception for touchdowns in the second half to seal the victory. Dallas must improve on protecting the football if they have any hopes of competing in the tough NFC East this season.

Dallas will travel down to Tampa Bay to open the season. Preview of that game will come shortly.

Re: Big D: A Dallas Cowboys Dynasty (Madden 10)

Week 1 Preview

Dallas Cowboys at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Keys to winning for the Cowboys:

1. Protect the football - After a preseason full of turnovers, Dallas must ensure they protect the ball on offense. This means Tony Romo must limit the interceptions and play smart. So look for the Cowboys to run smart, safe routes to ensure they don't turn the ball over.

2. Defensive front must apply pressure - The Cowboys defensive line and linebackers must show they can apply pressure to the QB. This is something the team lacked in preseason play. Dallas expects Tampa to run the ball seeing as the Bucs have struggling Leftwich starting week one over Josh Johnson, along with Michael Clayton out. So stopping Tampa's three back tandem will be key for Dallas.

3. Run the ball, then run the ball some more - The Cowboys will look to utilize all three running backs against a weak Tampa defense. Expect Barber, Jones and Choice to all see action early and often.

Injury Report:
Cowboys - No injuries

Tampa Bay - Michael Clayton out 1 week with Ab tear; Geno Hayes out 5 weeks with torn hamstring; Jermaine Phillips, Xavier Fulton and E.J. Biggers all out for season

Week 1 - Dallas holds on late in Tampa to beat the Bucs 30-24

Dallas 14 9 0 7 30
Tampa 0 7 3 14 24

AP – The Dallas Cowboys survived a ferocious comeback attempt from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today, winning 30-24. The Cowboys had the game in check until the 4th quarter, when the Bucs put up 2 touchdowns to cut the lead to 6 with less than a minute remaining in regulation. The Cowboys recovered the onside kick, leading to three kneel downs to secure the victory.

The Cowboys dominated from their first possession on until late in the 4th quarter. Dallas took the opening possession the length of the field, where Tony Romo found Jason Witten for the touchdown. On Tampa’s first possession, Byron Leftwich threw a pick six to Orlando Scandrick, giving the Cowboys a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Dallas was unable to stop the big runs from Carnell Williams, as he had 2 runs for 20+ yards. One of them, a 44 yard run for a second quarter touchdown, fresh off a Tony Romo interception. Dallas would answer quickly however, with Felix Jones making a big play of his own, scoring from 39 yards out.

Dallas had several opportunities in the red zone and failed to come away with points. Romo threw 2 interceptions in the red zone, along with a key fumble by Sam Hurd inside the 5 yard line. Late in the 4th quarter, Felix Jones fumbled inside the red zone, which allowed the Bucs to pull within a touchdown late.

Dallas, however, was able to pull out the victory in the end. Tampa put up 2 quick scoring drives inside 2 minutes remaining in the game. Dallas recovered the last onside kick, and iced the clock to move to 1-0 on the young season. Dallas will once again look to solve their turnover problem going in to week 2, where they face one of the top teams in the NFL, the NY Giants.
