Browns Search Comes to an End, Team Hires Frazier as Next Head Coach
AP- Cleveland Browns president Mike Keenan announced today that the organization's lengthly search for a new head coach has come to and end Thursday with the hiring of Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, an eleven year NFL coaching veteran who has a resume which includes stints as defensive backs coach with the Colts and Eagles and defensive coordinator jobs with the Bengals and most recently the Vikings. Frazier has never served in the NFL in a head coaching position before. "I am excited to get this opportunity to show Cleveland and the whole NFL what I can do in this position" said Frazier, age 51, on Thursday in a team scheduled press conference, "I think that any coach in this league will tell you that this is his dream, so it's great to realize that. I think that this team has a lot of talent that just needs to be exploited and it is important that these guys get some confidence in themselves. I think that when you combine a good coach scheme with great playcalling and confidence in the players, you see a lot of guys really living up to their potential."
Frazier went on to outline changes that he intends to make to the current look of the Browns, including a defensive shakeup that will require the team to transition from the "3-4" defense (three downed linemen and four linebackers in the base package) to the more conventional "4-3" defense (four down linemen and three linebackers). Frazier's defenses in Minnesota are known for being consistently among the league leaders in stopping the run. Being from the Tony Dungy school of coaching, Frazier almost assuredly will implement a version of the "Tampa Two" style zone defense first made popular by Dungy and Monte Kiffen in Tampa Bay. The Tampa Two is a version of the classic cover two defensive alignment that relies almost exclusively on the front four to create pressure while the linebackers and secondary rely on speed and strict execution to limit big plays by the offense. Another accolade Frazier brings with him is his reputation to coach up defensive backs, and the Browns should see marked improvement in this area of weakness based on the secondary improvement that has followed Frazier in each of his NFL stops.
Assisting coach Frazier in implementing his preferred style of defense will be 13-year NFL veteran Mark Duffner, who was most recently the linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, a job he had held under tenured head coach Jack del Rio since the 2006 season. Duffner has also spent time as the linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers (2003-2005) and the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach for the Bengals (1997-2004). Duffner also spent 21 years coaching in the college ranks, including two head coaching jobs at Holy Cross and the University of Maryland. Calling the plays on the offensive side of the ball for the Browns next year will be Bill Musgrave, thought to be a key developer of NFL rising star Matt Ryan in Atlanta, where Musgrave served under head coach Mike Smith as the quarterbacks coach. Musgrave has only held one offensive coordinator job in the NFL before, in Jacksonville for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. He is, however, a well traveled 11 year NFL veteran. The special teams coordinator spot is to be manned by 8-year specials veteran Larry Mac Duff.
The recent failures of the Cleveland Browns franchise have left one of the most loyal fan bases in the NFL in tatters and demoralized, and while there is no cause of celebration yet the newest coach as good as promised that some may be in order soon: "I came here to win" said the NFL's newest head coach to a crowd Thursday, "I came here to obtain victory and glory and I promise this fan base that we as a staff will leave no stone unturned until we achieve the dream of every NFL team, a world championship".
