The Lions have come to terms with free agent WR Plaxico Burress on a 2-year contract. Burress will likely be used as a sign-and-trade to get some young, upcoming talent onto the Lions roster.

Re: Do you believe in miracles?: Detroit Lions Franchise

Out with the Old, In with the New

Chris Williams should provide the spark the Lions were looking for.

Reports are that the Detroit Lions have made two trades and a free agent signing.

1. Acquired WR Mohamed Massaquoi, RB James Davis and a 3rd round pick from the Cleveland Browns for WR Plaxico Burress, WR Bryant Johnson and WR Ronald Curry.

It looks like the Lions were trying to go young here. Massaquoi is a good young reciever with loads of potential and James Davis is a dangerous player whenever he touches the ball, he could see some decent playing time. Burress, Johnson and Curry were decent recievers but all past their prime.

2. Acquired LT Chris Williams and a 5th round pick from the Chicago Bears for LT Jeff Backus.

This was a steal. Comparing Chris Williams and Jeff Backus talent wise is a wash but the thing is, Williams is seven years younger and has a higher ceiling than Backus. Plus throw in an extra draft pick and it makes this a lobsided trade for the Lions. It's hard to know what the Bears motivation to make this trade was.

3. Signed free agent WR Matt Jones to a 1-year, $2.24 million contract.

Jones is a decent reciever. Only 26-years old now, Jones caught 65 passes for 761 yards last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew when asked about the recent transactions, "We felt it was time for a change. Our team certainly isn't getting any younger and I didn't feel like we had the talent we needed to compete this year. I think these players we acquired will help us win this year and for many years past. I just didn't feel that way with older players like Jeff Backus and Plaxico Burress."

"I'm excited," says Lions coach Jim Schwartz. "I think these guys will provide a spark plug to our team."

Re: Do you believe in miracles?: Detroit Lions Franchise

VS.

Stafford looks in disgust after he throws his 2nd interception of the day.

New Season, Same Result
NEW ORLEANS - The Lions continued their losing ways and lost their first game of the season, 42-10 to the New Orleans Saints. This is yet another example of a game where the Lions just couldn't get anything going. Phillip Buchanon returns the opening kickoff 21 yards then bam, Kevin Smith runs for a 3-yard loss and Stafford throws two straight incompletions for a quick 3-and-out to start the season. Overrall, Stafford did not play bad, passing for 297 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT. He went 21-38 with a beauty of a pass to a diving Calvin Johnson for a 31-yard TD. Johnson finished with 8 rec, 112 yds and 1 TD, Dewayne White totaled 5 tackles and 1 sack and Mohamed Massaquoi had a nice NFL debut, catching 5 passes for 53 yards but that's where the good news ends. Kevin Smith rushed for just 14 yards on 7 carries. Even worse, New Orleans back Reggie Bush surpassed Smith's total by 206. Let me repeat that, Bush gained 222 yards on the ground. Only against the Lions . . . other notables for the Saints were Drew Brees passing for 3 TD with a 144.9 pass rating and Sedrick Ellis totaling 5 tackles for 2 sacks. The loss is the Lions 18th straight and 24th in their last 25 games.
