Cassel Struck
Aaron Smith, Detroit Free Press
Kansas City--Make that 7-0. For the 7th time this season the Lions are victorious. And the great thing is it only took them seven games to get to the win mark. Yeah, we are still undefeated and rolling pretty strong. This time we took our streak of wins to Kansas City to play the Chiefs, who have been a pretty good surprise as well this year. However, the Chiefs struggled to move the ball effectively against the Lions D and suffered a huge loss.
The Lions Defense picked off Matt Cassel three times and shut down Jamaal Charles effectively. "Our rush defense has been great this year. Not a single 100-yard rusher against us, no rushing touchdowns allowed. I got to say I'm happy about this" Jim Schwartz said, while addressing the media. Effective is right the Lions rush d is ranked 1st in the league in terms of yards. While we may be last in passing yards, don't be fooled cause this secondary comes up big in takeaways. Detroit leads the league in interceptions, so you can see why we allow so little points a game.
This game also marked the second appearance of the Lions new 3-4/4-3 mix. "We've been working through both systems and it seems our defense is handling it" Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau said. The Lions using the 3-4 was introduced last week versus San Diego, in which they shut the Chargers offense down from getting in the endzone. "I like this system, we are really coming to our own now" Linebacker Julian Peterson said.
The offense looked very much revamped with the return of Kevin Smith. "It feels so good to be back on the field. I got to do my job and help this team win, my mans" Kevin Smith said during the press game conference. Matthew Stafford looked fantastic, passing for 4 touchdown passes, two of them going to Kevin Smith, who lined up in the slot a few times. And we did what we do best, control clock. The Lions held the ball for over 40 minutes, and kept the Kansas City Defense at bay. They sealed the deal with 13 play 7:45 minute drive from the late third to early fourth.
Now that we are 7-0, it may seem like we are a clear cut favorite in the NFC North. We hold a 4 game lead over the Vikings and host the Raiders next week. No disrespect to the Raiders, but the way we are playing I feel bad for the Black Hole.
