Re: Not Likely, But Playable:Matt10's Memphis Tigers
GAME DAY
Week 1 - Memorial Stadium - Lincoln, NE
Memphis @ #21 Nebraska
Week number one was going to be our biggest test yet, and in fact - it most certainly was. I chose to play Arkelon Hall because I'm sure the likes of Suh and Dilliard - and pretty much every other damn Cornhusker in the stadium was going to come fast and hard. So Hall's "escapability" would be useful in preventing such things - and maybe even throwing a couple good throws once in a while.
I don't believe in the term "tale of two halfs" - so my summary is by quarters - an inspirational speech may happen during half time, but I feel motivation comes from the environment (the field, the sidelines).
First Quarter: Early Commitment
I told the defensive line to jump the snap on every play. I told them this was an "early commitment". Basically no matter what the count was, when they felt it was time to break into the trenches - do so - I couldn't care less abou the penalties (which never arrived).
It was no surprise to me then, when we took the lead via a safety by Turner grabbing at the shoe strings of Zach Lee -- Mem 2, Neb 0.
Looking like a soccer scoreboard, Nebraska felt embarrased, Mr. Lee more than anyone I'm assuming. The reason being, on the next possession he drove his team down the field before slotting a perfect pass into Niles Paul (argh!) numbers, who then left my defense in the dust for a 22-yard score -- Mem 2, Neb 7.
Second Quarter: Lights
Niles Paul did not slowly punch our lights out - he ravaged our hopes of a good half immediately beginning the second quarter when he returned Booker's punt 82-yards, completely untouched.
Zach Lee found his underperforming running back, Louis Castille with a perfectly placed pass over Edwards' shoulder for a 10-yard score.
Henery, their kicker, didn't have any trouble witha 45-yarder to end the half, and to blank us in the second quarter -- Mem 2, Neb 24.
Third Quarter: Sweet Jebus
I remember saying something positive in the half time "speech", yada yada "you boys are playing your heart out"...yada yada..."keep giving it to them"...yada yada "they are scared of you".
All of what I said was extinguished in the third quarter, even the "yada..yada's".
Their backup running back, Roy Helu, decided he would put his mark on the game - and on his one and only carry - he bolted past the d-line, the linebackers and the secondary - untouched of course - for 47-yards.
Niles Paul, 65-yard catch and pass from Lee...don't ask. Touchdown.
Hall threw his first interception of the game, he was being pressured by Suh - but then I guess realized that if he tries to throw the ball directly at Nebraska's #93 in the face, the onslaught would stop.
Wrong - Hall chucks the ball in the direciton of Suh, and straight into the hands of linebacker, Dilliard - who then proceeds to go 38-yards, untouched of course into the endzone -- Mem 2, Neb 45.
Curtis Steele said to me at half time that he would try to get more yards. Great, Curtis - thanks for the mission statement. Curtis was stifled yet again, a theme that had been prominent to the Cornhusker linebacking core - and finished his day with a -1 total yards achieved (or dechieved?).
The latest stop on our beloved RB, resulted in one last possession for the home side before the quarter was up - and of course Lee found Gilleylen on another quick slot pass - the received torched up the field for a blister 84-yard touchdown -- Mem 2, Neb 52.
Fourth Quarter: Long Duck Hall
Arkelon Hall took off his panties and started throwing the ball down the field - and the 22-yard pass in tight coverage to Baker for our first touchdown of the season was a blissful feeling.
And then of course, after Henery's chip shot to give them another point, we had the final say.
Hall tossed up a prayer which found Singleton sreaking down the sidelines, marked tightly by Anthony West, but the ball was a perfectly thrown one - and it was another touchdown.
Too bad, so sad, the backups were put in on their side - and they did a good job to run the clock out.
I shook hands with Bo: "Got some ******s there, huh?" he says - and I replied something to the effect of eat some wheat.
