At 6'6 288 LBS, Heyward has the power to blow up runs in the backfield while still keeping feet quick enough to apply pressure to any QB.
Heyward's career started in High School in Suwanee, Georgia. Heyward left High School as 4 star prospect according to most recruiting sources, and drew plenty of interest from many SEC schools. With scholarships on the table from Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Ohio State, Heyward elected to play for Ohio State mostly because of the playing time he could receive as early as his Freshman year, if he elected to red-shirt his first year on campus. Heyward decided to red-shirt for his freshman year.
After one year as a red-shirt, Heyward entered 2009 knowing the playbook, experienced, and had bulked up since his Senior year in High School. The choice to sit out a year would benefit Heyward in the long run.
Heyward received as much playing time as any D1 player could ask for in his first year on campus. At the end of his Freshman season, Heyward had proven himself as an impact player on a stout Ohio state defense. Heyward's final season stat line included 33 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Impressive numbers for a Freshman at a top caliber school such as Ohio State.
By his Sophomore season, word of Heyward's potential was spreading resulting in a much harder job for Heyward to be a game changer. Heyward only recorded 4.5 tackles for a loss in his Sophomore season, but he still managed to squeak out 3 sacks and 37 tackles.
Cameron's Junior season is when he would explode into the national spotlight. Heyward recorded career highs in tackles and sacks in 2009 with 46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and tied his career high in tackles for a loss with 10. Heyward finished 2009 as an All-Big Ten defensive linemen, and enters 2010 as a preseason All-American.
Cameron Heyward is the motor inside that powers the Ohio State defense. Whether it's a run, or pass, Heyward is sure to apply pressure to the ball carrier and come up big in the teams most need times.
