Re: Big Ten Nebraska (BBCF, 2010+)

Ouch, some tough losses. T.J looks like he can be good for you if he cuts down the INT's, although you have been playing some really good teams. Two WR's with over 100 yards receiving is good stuff. The photo's look good, looking forward to your huskers turning it around and getting into a bowl.

At this point the situation looks bleak, hopefully you can turn things around.

Wow really bad start from the Huskers, if you would of beaten Buffalo it would've turned things around though, 2-2 is a lot better to look at then 1-3. Good luck for the rest of the season.

ooc: yeah...even getting into a bowl now is looking like it won't be easy. Iowa's in an eerily similar situation to us; at 1-3 now with losses to both Wisconsin and Buffalo. Difference is, somehow they're still ranked. It's cool though, 'cause...

T.J. Flutie was vital to the Huskers' upset win over Michigan

J.W. Swayne has gone from unheralded walk-on to a dangerous 6'6 presence in the slot

Defense key in Husker upset - Elmand's Mailbag
Stuart Elmand, eSi

Bo Pelini's Huskers showed they weren't up for a letdown after last week's Wisconsin debacle, and the Pelini-squared defense finally won a game for this bedraggled squad.

What? In a game where Wayne Martin ran wild, even by his standards, and Devone Joe further showed that Michigan has a bright future at QB after currently-injured senior Darrell Lee graduates? Those two accounted for 466 yards of net offense, not counting sacks. So why the credit to Bo's D?

This was perhaps the best example of bend-but-don't-break D we've seen all year. It was a heck of a lot of bending, but then, it's Nebraska's misfortune to run into two of the Top 6 backs in the nation in consecutive weeks. Nebraska won because it held Michigan to 3 total points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. Martin broke his long gainers, but the Huskers stiffened past midfield, and Devone Joe had a miserable day on third down passing. Michigan was batting just .267 on third downs, to Nebraska's .438. In other words, it was all about making the most of the opportunities.

Rich Rodriguez has got to be disappointed with the outcome, as the opportunities were many for his squad. T.J. Flutie had two first quarter interceptions in a game that looked like it was going to get out of hand quickly. But the Huskers made a goalline stand, and freshman kicker Golden Bulluck converted the field goal from extra point distance. But Bulluck would go on to miss two other field goals, and Michigan failed to make good use of the three Flutie interceptions that would come their way.

After scoring 17 - and coming close to making that 21 - in the first quarter, Michigan took an inexplicable 40 minute leave of absence. Frankly, a 2-2 team ranked 13th in the nation should have played with more urgency. Instead, they allowed a Nebraska team - already 1-3 and desperate to not let that turn into 1-4 - to win the battle of will. Flutie had a rough day overall, but found his receivers on enough occasions deep to keep the drives moving when they had to. Even the Husker ground game got a little spark from Doug Lenda, whose 15-yard score in the third put the Huskers on top, and whose 37-yard romp later that quarter set up the Huskers' final score.

This game played out probably about as perfectly as Bo Pelini could have envisioned. Michigan's back seven are fast, roaming ballhawks. But his offense put up some opportune scoring strikes, ground a good amount of clock, and then the Blackshirt defense held on for the win. It's all-of-a-sudden a different outlook the next few weeks for 2-3 Nebraska, which has four now very winnable games before an Oct. 23 showdown at Penn State.

How did taking those knees feel, T.J. Flutie?

Dropped out: Cal (23), Colorado (25)

A couple of big movers this week. 4-0 Tennessee was on the cusp of the Top 25, but debuted at 14 after a shocking 22-19 upset on the road against #3 Georgia. 4-0 Washington State also gained momentum, leapfrogging a hefty handful of teams to debut at #20 after its handy 25-10 dispatching of #23 Cal, also on the road. UCLA gets some momentum after a 14-9 victory on the road against #11 Utah, and grabs the top spot in this week's AP. Oklahoma is still #1 in the BCS standings, however.

UCLA is ranked number one? Wowo, been a long time since that last happened. Good win against the Wolverines, maybe that can be a season changing game.

Yep, surprise at UCLA's rise and I definitely hope so. The Top 25 is strangely power conference dominated this year...there's no BCS buster in sight! Maybe Utah's fault for jumping ship to the Pac 10.

Quick Hits Around the Big 10

Michigan0-22-3126130L-2
Michigan State0-22-3110130L2

Ohio State has recovered from an early home setback to Oklahoma State, with consecutive conference wins propelling them to the most solid position in the Big 10 East. The heightened QB competition between junior Kynan Teague and incumbent senior Steven Newland lasted well into training camp, and it looks like Coach Tressel's selection of Teague has been a good one. In week 4, Teague found Charlie Matuszak in the endzone to culminate a pure clutch game-winning drive that gave the Buckeyes a 37-34 lead with 22 seconds to go.

Purdue is on bye this week after a heartbreaker loss to the Buckeyes in week 4. The power's been all Big 10 West, surprisingly, and we'll get a shodown of second seeds with Purdue hosting Penn State.

Indiana is the surprise team so far, despite a fairly brutal opening slate. They traveled to the Coliseum to upset top-ranked USC in their season opener, and lost by just one touchdown to then-#3 Oklahoma in the next week. They'll get sorely tested by #4 Wiconsin this week. Hoosier quarterback Herbert McCall is going to need to step up.

Northwestern boasts one of the least talented teams in the Big 10, but has the unique distinction of having played Buffalo this year and not lost. It's been a dreary couple of weeks since, though.

Michigan is not the kind of team you'd expecting bringin up the tail rear in a Big 10 division, but that's exactly where they are. Losses to Top 10 Notre Dame and Penn State haven't helped, and the Wolverines dropped a must-win against Nebraska last week. Ann Arbor must now brace itself for what figures to be at least a 4 loss season after sky-high expectations in RichRod's third year.

Michigan State - at least something for Michigan fans to hang their hats on. Michigan State has had a very bipolar schedule, notching wins over ECU and Duke but losing handily to Notre Dame, Iowa, and Ohio State. All but the last were blowouts.

Penn State has Heisman frontrunner Ray Adams at the helm, and he's a big part of why JoePa's Nittany Lions are gunning for another national championship. Senior bruiser Craig Bray is nursing a torn groin at the moment, but PSU should manage to get by. When healthy, there may not be a back in the country who's better.

Minnesota has turned to true freshman Larry Watson as its starter, and the kid has been an absolute gamer so far, completing 67% of his passes with 13TDs to 3INT's in three games. He'll need to continue this level of play down there in Lincoln, Nebraska to keep the Gophers undefeated in conference play.

Wisconsin - Just call this the Running Backs Conference. With Bray, Michigan's Wayne Martin, and Wisconsin's Tom Heard, the Big 10 is boasting some of the best running backs in the nation this year. 3 yards and a cloud of dust? Try 6, because that's closer to what Heard (633 yds, 5.55 ypc) is averaging. Senior Tra Westbrook has given away recently to sophomore Tony Harrison at QB, but the latter is out with an elbow ligament tear, and Westbrook has a shot to seize his job back.

Iowa has tumbled quite a bit from its preseason Top 10 billing, and it's been felt across the board. Tailback Mal Boireau and quarterback Ted Hayes were supposed to be one of the nation's premier duos, but both have had humblingly mediocre seasons to date. The Hawkeyes are 1-3 and face Ohio State this week. Kirk Ferentz has got to be sweating in his seat, because going from Top 10 to not making a bowl game - something the Hawkeyes are dangerously close to being on the path of - is not going to help anyone keep jobs.

Nebraska was exactly where Iowa was a week ago, both in terms of record and in the 'losses to MAC Buffalo' category. A win over Michigan has lifted spirits in Lincoln, but they'll need to show they deserve that 7-point edge the Vegas oddsmakers give them in Lincoln against Minnesota.

Illinois - Talk about bottom of the barrel. Illinois has not even really challenged in a game this year, and we're just getting into the tough part of the schedule. Owners of the 'Most likely to lose every game this season' midseason shame award.

Swayne charging forward
September 23, 2010

Fullback Windrell Swayne has been in a nice little friendly competition with starter (and fellow junior) Greg Asari-Dokubo in the past two weeks, although running backs coach Tim Beck notes that no changes are expected in the lineup.

"Both those guys look good out there. They bring different skills to the table, and we like what we see out of both of them."

Stewart gets more on his plate
September 21, 2010

How did true freshman placekicker James Stewart feel when he heard the news that kickoff duties were now being handed to him?

"Ecstatic," said a beaming Stewart. "I've been waiting for this chance to show the coaches what I got. Kickers usually do this sort of thing and I don't think it's too much to handle at all."

KO duties previously belonged to backup punter Ernie Price, the Fairbury, NE junior who has managed just two touchbacks on the year. "Boy, I miss Adi Kunalic," said special teams coach John Papuchis. "I wish this were the real-life 2010 Huskers. We'd be a heck of a lot better. Someone pinch me, is this a dream?"

Cesaire, Bowens aiming for return
September 19, 2010

2nd-string guard Troy Bowens (a senior walkon) and starting defensive tackle Rian Cesaire (a junior) should both be cleared by the academic probation house this week to take the field again after each missing three weeks of action. It's been a tough road for Nebraska, especially without Cesaire on the interior, so this should be a welcome return on both counts.

Bailey: broken ribs, 1-4
September 18, 2010

Starting cornerback Todd Bailey (Sr.) has got his x-rays back to confirm broken ribs, sustained in the third quarter of today's upset victory of Michigan. A smart, tough, and athletic defender, Bailey's been an invaluable chip in a secondary short on starting-caliber players. The diagnosis means he's likely out of next week's match against Purdue, at the very least.

This means some more playing time for Matt Schobel (Fr) and Matt Manning (RFr), so expect some growing pains.

Husker make huge comeback to stay afloat in Big Ten West
Adam Jitterbug, ASPN
September 25, 2010

Down 28-7 early, the hometown Cornhuskers looked like a team that thought its season was done after a rousing victory over Michigan last week. But the Huskers awoke from their stupor in the second quarter and completely shut down Minnesota in every facet of the game for the rest of the way.

After giving up numerous big plays early - including the opening 89-yard kickoff return by the speedy Larry Zolak - the Blackshirts settled in and shut the clamps down on Mike Johnson and the Gopher offense. The sophomore was absolutely ineffective in his first game back from injury, and you sort of have to wonder why the Gophers didn't just ride the hot hand of Larry Watson.

Nebraska ultimately outgained Minnesota 534-274, and despite three costly lost fumbles, charged back to take the win. T.J. Flutie's four touchdown passes highlight the continued emergence of slot man J.W. Swayne, who enjoyed his third straight 100-yard game and has five touchdowns on the year. It was a nice return, too, for Flip Quander, who has had a miserably invisible year rushing the football but managed a 95 yard performance today. Senior center Bobby Reese has been an absolute rock on this inconsistent Husker O-line. He's making a heck of a case for himself for postseason honors right now.

Some questionable playcalling there at the end, but it doesn't matter with this Husker victory. Hanging on to a 6 point lead, Nebraska kept it in the air to try to put up more points, and gave the ball away deep in their own territory. Fortunately, the Blackshirts held and linebacker Madre Brewster blocked Eric Breaux's field goal attempt.

Minnesota's nice little run looks like it might be at an end, as they will face Wisconsin and Penn State in the following weeks and could have used some momentum from this game. Nebraska will carry their second straight victory into a showdown with #18 Purdue, who are coming off a 27-10 loss to Penn State. While Wisconsin and Penn State are running rampant through the Big 10 right now, it should be noted that two of Nebraska's 3 losses have now come against what's almost a lock to be the #1 and #2 teams in the nation - Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

TOP 25 RUNDOWN

#8 Florida (3-2) 28
#14 Tennessee (5-0) 44

UT was a fast riser last week, from unranked to 14, but they showed it wasn't just the media pumping up a matchup. Tennessee destroyed Florida, rise to #3 in the rankings, and travel to #25 Alabama this week. It's about the time of year the undefeated teams are getting serious love. Why is Texas (3-2) still in the Top 5?

Cal (4-1) 38
#1 UCLA (4-1) 20

Cal jumps back into the rankings with a handy upset of the top-ranked team in the nation at their own house. How many of us figured the Bruins to hold at #1, anyway?

Kansas (4-1) 27
#3 Texas (3-2) 24

How in the world does Texas drop just one spot in the polls after this home loss to the Kansas Jayhawks? It's a mystery, but with Colorado now gone, KU gives some nice Big 12 North representation to the - oh, right. There's no divisions in the Big 12 anymore.

#17 Ohio State (5-1) 21
Iowa (1-4) 19

The Buckeyes finally put Iowa out of its misery, dropping the Hawkeyes - who are now Officially Hapless - from the Top 25. Iowa had a tough opening schedule though, so we'll see if they can recover enough to make a bowl run.

Games of the Week - Week 7

#14 Boston College (4-1) at #11 Miami (4-1)
#1 Oklahoma at Kansas State (4-1)
#18 Washington State (5-0) at #9 Southern Cal (4-2)
#13 Utah (4-1) at Colorado (3-2)
#12 Florida (3-2) at #8 Georgia (4-1)

The Picks
Stuart Elmand
September 29, 2010

Florida-Georgia is the crown jewel of this week's television slate and that should be an exceedingly good SEC showdown to watch. Georgia's good, but Florida is better than its 3-2 record. Let's go with senior QB Alfonso Pickens giving his gators a much needed win here, on the road. Florida 31, Georgia 20.

Upset special #2 comes with Kansas State over Oklahoma. That's right - you heard it here first. It's not an issue of talent, but I think OU's been somewhat overrated and untested so far this year. Look for underrated senior Wildcat tailback De'Mond Keckin to continue add on to his 739 yards on the year. Kansas State 34, Oklahoma 27

Utah and Colorado face off in Boulder in a battle of Pac-10 newcomers. Can't go against Utah with this one - shouldn't even be close. Colorado is really floundering right now. Utah 33, Colorado 14

Washington State is a fast riser in the polls, and one of the remaining undefeated teams. But they haven't met USC yet. USC 28, Wash St. 13

Boston College is about to get a huge test with Miami. Hurricanes QB Gregg Dunaway has struggled so far this year, but he's about to get back on track. Miami 27, Boston College 21

Re: Big Ten Nebraska (BBCF, 2010+)

Nice win over Minnesota! Hopefully the losing days are over for Nebraska.
