Week 7 Recap

Not even creepy Herbie could save the Cornhuskers from Purdue

#22 Purdue (3-2) 29
Nebraska (3-4) 20

Say, what's happened to home-field advantage these days for the Huskers? That's their third dropped home game this year. Bo Pelini has to start getting worried about these sluggish starts, as the Huskers have routinely found themselves in deep holes at the beginning of their games this year. Nebraska mounted another comeback, leading 20-16 going into the 4th, but JoJo Joyce put Purdue back on top with a rare grab in the back of the endzone, and the Boilermakers never looked back.

#11 Boston College (5-1) 20
#15 Miami (4-2) 10

Just as predicted, the Eagles find a way to upset a Miami team that can't get it going right now.

#18 Utah (4-2) 10
#25 Colorado (4-2) 17

Colorado is back in the Top 25 after a strong 4th quarter effort gives them the win.

#21 Wash State (5-1) 17
#9 Southern Cal (5-2) 51

An embarrassing show of force by the Trojans, who have good news this week as their 2-year bowl ban has been officially lifted by the NCAA. Some reduction of scholarships will continue to take effect, however.

#13 Florida (3-3) 23
#7 Georgia (5-1) 27

Alfonso Pickens was injured after a productive 3 pass attempts (2 touchdowns), and Florida never got back on track.

#1 Oklahoma (5-0) 24
Kansas State (4-2) 14

Just as predicted, the Sooners take an undefeated record into their Red River Shootout.

Week 8's Finest

A very good slate of games this week, with some classic conference tussles about to unfold. Here's the lowdown:

#2 Wisconsin (7-0) at #12 Ohio State (6-1) Could this be the end of Wisconsin's run at the top? Ohio State is a very dangerous team, but I say the Badgers roll with this one, and make it to the #1 spot. 20-17.

#1 Oklahoma (5-0) at #5 Texas (4-2) Oklahoma's about to get tested as it hasn't before. This week's Upset Special! That Sooner defense is much to porous to continue delivering victories, especially against a 2-loss but battle-hardened Longhorn team that is more balanced overall. Texas, 31-17.

#19 Kansas (5-1) at #14 Oklahoma State (4-1) A battle of Big 12 also-ran's. The former Big 12 south gets a rude awakening to reality...Kansas is back. They are the much better all around team, and about to make a big leap in the rankings. Kansas 34, OSU 14.

#6 Notre Dame (6-1) at #22 Purdue (3-2) Purdue's defense did a fine job containing T.J. Flutie and Nebraska last week, but Notre Dame is a whole different beast. Cotton Bennett is one of the nation's leading rushers, and he's going to have a field day against that front 7. Notre Dame 38, Purdue 24.

Top 25 Quick Hits

Oklahoma solidifies its status as #1 with a 37-12 pounding of #5 Texas. These Sooners look for real. Another team that looks seriously legit is #2 Penn State, who now sit at 7-0, and head into a critical showdown at #6 Wisconsin. Wisconsin was #2, but lost 7-28 to Ohio State, who moved up to #4 from #12.

A contentious Pac-10 showdown will be held in Los Angeles this week, as the #12 Trojans of Southern Cal give a Pac 10 welcoming to the #19 Utah Utes. USC looks in control of the Pac 10 South, and Utah absolutely needs to knock them off here to have any hope of a playoff run.

Player Most Likely To Make a Second Half Resurgence

Flip Quander, RB - Nebraska - Quander is a very fast back whose Husker career has seen its share of huge plays...not this season though; not until today. His 80 yard romp in the 4th quarter put the icing on the cake for a sweet Husker victory as Nebraska gets back to .500, and Quander gets his ypc back to 4.00 territory.

These are very well written and nice win against Sparty. Quander had a blow out game.

Husker hopes fall with Holmes
Mot Shatel
October 18, 2010

The up-and-down season for Nebraska continues. It's one that will be missing its most talented lineman for at least a few weeks.

Team doctors are hopeful that junior Quincy Holmes will return from his torn elbow cartilage before season's end, but it's not a complete guarantee at this point.

The Huskers fell rather flat after that, and Shawn Watson turned away from the run game as much as he could. T.J. Flutie's quick trigger and pocket mobility is probably the only thing that saved the Huskers from a dozen sacks - it's a small miracle that he escaped with just two.

Flutie and Ohio State's Kynan Teague continue to lead the nation in passing (Teague is first). Freshman left tackle Aaron Jenkins stepped in for Holmes, who was injured in the first quarter, but was practically a turnstile for this game. It's no big wonder that, as Nebraska continues to plod their way through a down-and-out 2010 season, fans are still solidly behind the play of their oft-beleaguered QB.

Flutie has failed yet again to deliver a comeback win for the Huskers though, coming only tantalizingly close before the Husker defense - which still has not received their fabled 'Blackshirt' practice jerseys - were unable to get the ball back after punting with 2:34 to play. It would be one thing, were the Hawkeyes - a talented team by any evaluation - a team that had lived up to its preseason Top 10 billing. But the Hawkeyes stumbled through their early season nonconference slate and entered the game just 2-4.

Bo Pelini is only in his first year, but it's been a tremendous struggle. The players are evidently not buying in, and his angry demeanor on the field continues to cost the Huskers. Were it not for a 15-yard sidelines penalty towards the end of the game, Flutie and co might have found just enough plays in them for a tying drive.

As frustrations build up in Lincoln, it's only fair to ask: how early is too early for a coach's seat to start warming up? Four losses in Memorial Stadium, in one year, is just plain unacceptable.

ASPN Big Ten Blog: Penn State up; Wisconsin down
Adam Jitterbug
October 24, 2010

The star has seemingly set on Wisconsin's year - which is plenty frustrating for Badger fans, given how recently they sat at #2 in the polls. With the Nittany Lions' 30-25 victory last week, JoePa has clinched himself a spot in the first-ever Big Ten Championship Game. Even if Wisconsin makes up its two game deficit, Penn State wins on tiebreakers. And it's unlikely the Badgers can make up enough poll ground in the coming weeks to secure an at-large bid.

So it'll be Penn State-Ohio State in the Big 10's inaugural championship bout; both are yet undefeated in conference play and it should be a good one. Penn State is #2 in the stands and Ohio State is very deserving of being a Top 5 team: it dropped two spots to 6 after trouncing Indiana 72-10; go figure.

Ohio State still has a looming showdown with Michigan, while Penn State has to face Nebraska (this week, at home) and Iowa. JoePa has the easier road here, but it's possible both he and Sweater Vest will enter the championship game undefeated - in which case, we'll get to see a decisive battle between two top teams that have been unable to meet in the regular season because of the new conference divisions.

Memo to Kirk Ferentz: get Jim Navies into the game! The senior dual-threat quarterback has shone the (very few) chances he's gotten over the years, and it's clear that players are not responding to ultratalented pocket passer Ted Hayes.

Hayes (12) has just a 1:1 TD-INT ratio on the year (8 of each), and Iowa's had to find ways to win in spite of him. It's great that Iowa has such a good running attack, but imagine what might be. Navies could have been the perfect fit in this offense, and it's mind-boggling that Ferentz is still sticking with Hayes.

T.J. Flutie nearly led the Huskers to a fourth quarter shocker

Flip Quander broke a huge run early, but was swarmed and contained the rest of the day

Nittany Lions Survive Scare
Keter Ping
October 24, 2010

A rockin' Beaver Stadium had record attendance on Saturday night - just like the last time the Nittany Lions welcomed Nebraska, in September of 2002. Penn State cruised to a 40-7 victory on that night. This time, the Big Ten Huskers had a different sort of game in mind.

Penn State may be the #2 team in the nation, and may have had a home crowd of 110,862, but that didn't stop the Cornhuskers from making a game of it from the very start. Flip Quander dazzled with his all-too-rarely-seen speed, turning on the jets and speeding by the black jerseys for a 79-yard first quarter touchdown that tied the game early, and left the stunned home crowd silent.

The strong Nittany Lion defense had the Huskers' number for most of the game, which probably made the result all the more difficult to comprehend. Quander would have trouble just gaining positive yards from scrimmage the rest of the way, and T.J. Flutie's start was marked by short gains or incompletions.

But as they have for much of the year, these Huskers lived and died by the big play. For a 4-6 team, they've sure produced more than their share of highlight reel type stuff. On their opening drive of the second half, tight end Ray Krepfle made probably the play of his career when his in-traffic grab resulted in a collision of three Penn State defenders. Krepfle charged through the last man, safety Ho'oikaika Lindsey - usually one of the more surehanded tacklers on this Penn State D - and covered 91 yards of net gain turf on game-tying score.

For their parts, Ray Adams and Craig Bray were nigh unstoppable. Nebraska has had tremendous trouble with talented running backs, and Bray's game was one of the best that an opposing RB has put on the Blackshirts all season. And Adams, the redshirt junior whom some scouts are calling a surefire Top 5 pick already, had his way with a razor-thin secondary missing its captain in Robert Brooks. But the Huskers' role as dangerous underdogs was undeniable, and neither was their hunger.

Defensive tackle Terry Streets pulled off a great Ndamukong Suh impression in the 4th quarter, fairly grabbing the ball from just beyond Adams' fingertips in a 49-yard interception return that sparked the Huskers - then down 10 - back to life. Flutie answered a couple drives later with a touchdown pass to Thad Abdullah that gave the suddenly surging Nebraska team a 31-27 lead.

Then Adams went to work - and as the Huskers lived on the big play, so did they die by it. Adams picked on Robert Brooks' replacement in the Blackshirt secondary - redshirt freshman Mike Fazande - and found unheralded senior Anthony Carter for a huge 77-yard touchdown strike. Carter's had a big year thanks to some injuries on the WR front for Penn State, and tonight was the biggest of them all. Without the catch - which Carter juggled for a even six yards before completely coming down with it and running the rest of the way - the Nittany Lions might be now swallowing a loss, as Flutie and the Huskers were in a zone in that fourth quarter.

Penn State was lucky enough to give up only a short-distance field goal with under a minute ago, and, with the game tied and ten ticks left on the clock, lined up senior placekicker Rob Lee for the field goal. Lee's been on and off all year, but on this night he split the uprights perfectly. Instant hero.

And so Penn State survives to live another day, and it's clear that they and top-ranked Oklahoma are pulling away from the pack. If Oklahoma falls this week on the road against #3 Kansas, then Penn State will finally take a long-deserved seat atop the polls. The good teams are the ones that pull out victories, and there isn't a team in the country that knows how to win like these guys right now.

Addendum: We're told junior Nebraska backup safety/returner Charles Shell's season is likely done with a back injury suffered yesterday in the third quarter. Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

Last second touchdown, but Kansas don't have the balls to go for the upset win...and wind up losing in overtime.

Only games against Illinois and Troy left - I think I'll wrap up this season and get to the playoffs/bowls, and recruiting.

Question to you guys: should I post my players' ratings, to give a better (but perhaps too definitive) look at the roster? Or only use player spotlights/articles to highlight or hype up some players?

Re: Big Ten Nebraska (BBCF, 2010+)

Season wrap-up. Things are moving a bit quickly now as Nebraska doesn't really have a role to play, but they'll slow down soon enough in the offseason. Look forward to doing some more preseason stuff now that there's some context to jump into.

Weeks 12-13 Recap, Nebraska

Nebraska RB Flip Quander flips out all over Memorial Stadium, smashing the Husker record books with a 339 yard performance, on his own, on the ground. The Huskers beat up on two weak opponents to end the season to gain a bowl eligibility they don't really deserve, and Quander and the team pad up on their rushing stats. That won't erase the fact that he's been absolutely invisible in the big games where his team needed him this year.

Week 14 Recap

Unranked Michigan shocks #7 Ohio State in Ann Arbor, 37-24 and leaps back into the polls. The Buckeyes now must hope for a Big 10 Championship victory against Penn State to make the playoffs.

#1 Oklahoma continues its undefeated season with a 34-31 victory over Oklahoma State.

#16 USC wins its annual grudge match against #10 UCLA, stomping all over the Bruins, 34-6 in a 'road game' between these two Los Angeles rivals.

Unranked Auburn hosts #17 Alabama and defeats them, 20-7, culminating a disappointing season for the Crimson Tide at 8-3.

Week 15 Recap - Rivalry Week

It's rivalry week, as some of the bitterest enemies take to the field in the last week of regular season play...

We must note that Buffalo concludes a shockingly bad 3-8 season - bad, considering its victories all came early, against Nebraska, Iowa, and Cincinnati. These Bulls were thinking bowl game before a couple tough losses and a 51-0 blowout against Pittsburgh sent their season officially spiraling. I'm still trying to figure out how they accomplished what they did this season.

Navy is sure missing them some Paul Johnson right now. They dropped the Army game, 10-34.

#6 Notre Dame knocks #20 Boston College out of the Top 25 standings with a 36-14 road victory. They've got one of the at-large playoff bids just about locked up here, though it's not official until it's official.

#15 Florida fairly trounces Florida State, 62-31...not this year, Seminoles.

BCS busters? Boise and Syracuse have each made a late season charge into the polls. Boise sits at #16, and Syracuse #8. What? The Big East is a BCS conference? Oops - I forgot, too.

Award Watch

Heisman: John Benford, QB, Sr, Boise State
Def POY: Jabari Coates, DT, RJr, Miami
Golden Arm: John Benford, QB, Sr, Boise State
Fleet feet: Cotton Bennett, RB, Sr, Notre Dame
Good hands: Marvin Kokolas, WR, Sr, Boise State
Strong hands: Derek Adams, TE, RJr, Texas
Punisher: Darnay Poteat, OT, Sr, Boise State
Disrupter: Jabari Coates, DT, RJr, Miami
Playmaker: Doug Welch, OLB, RJr, Purdue
Ballhawk: Wesley Moore, SS, Sr, Ohio State
Steel toe: Chris Morris, K, Jr, Florida
Coffin corner: Donny Branch, P, So, Southern Miss
Gamebreaker: John Verser, WR, RSo, LSU

I kept some of the other award names as their in-game defaults, as I found these to be more descriptive than say, 'John Mackey Award'...let me know if you guys feel differently, though. Some of them: disrupter (best DL), punisher (best OL), aren't too clear.

All-Americans

n.b - ignore the Coaches of the Years; I'm writing as if all the coaches all real-life current coaches and think I'll continue to do so even as absurd amounts of years pass by. Gives the dynasty more character than nameless, faceless guys with ratings.
