Re: Horns! Making History: The Story of Longhorns Football

No. 13 Texas topples Wyoming, 52-7

Nate Alston completes 21 of 34 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns.

Sept. 1, 2012
AUSTIN, Tex. (AP) -- Garret Gilbert warmed up and No. 13 Texas overcame three turnovers and a slow start in the first half to beat Wyoming 52-7 on Saturday.
The Longhorns (1-0) had a slow start on offense until taking a 17-0 lead just before halftime, although their defense had a great afternoon against a spread offense in preparation for next weekend's showdown with New Mexico.
The defense held the Cowboys (0-1) out of the end zone until the third quarter and limited them to 2-for-7 on third down in helping to secure the Longhorns' 15th straight home win, tying a school record established in the 1960s.
However, the Longhorns had a huge night from senior linebacker Matt Jordan, who had 14 tackles, nine for a loss, and added two sacks.
GIlbert completed 15 of 22 passes for 241yards and four TDs. In what fourth-year Wyoming coach Dave Christensen called "probably the biggest game that's ever been played for Wyoming," the Cowboys played a thrilling first half against the Longhorns, who were favored by 33 1/2 points.
Darrell Royal-Memorial Stadium had a total attendance of 101,096 fans, the second largest crowd ever to watch a football game in the state of Texas behind the Dallas Cowboys stadium.
The Longhorns completed just 3-of-11 third downs in the first half, but the Cowboys were worse: 1-for-9, and that kept Texas from paying dearly for its sputtering offense until they could get things figured out.
