UL-Lafayette Looking to Improve; Replace Coach Bustle
LAFAYETTE, La. - The Ragin Cajuns have decided to go in a different direction this season and have decided to let go of head coach Ricky Bustle. Bustle, hired in 2002, saw improvement during his first four seasons at UL-Lafayette, but things have seemed to plateau as of late, with the Ragin Cajuns going 6-6 the past two seasons.
Athletic Director, David Walker, decided that it was time to move on and ended Bustle’s contract one year early.
“It was hard for us to do, but something needed to be done. While we’ve enjoyed everything that Ricky has done for the program, I feel as though we should have accomplished more the past two seasons. We owe it to the players, the alumni, and the fans to give them a solid football program.”
Walker set out on a search for the next head coach of UL-Lafayette and although he had dozens of prospects in mind, one resume stuck out. An assistant coach from a small college in North Dakota, Jason Devereaux, got the call from David Walker and was asked to come in for an interview. Devereaux is a south Louisiana native, having grown up in Carencro, Louisiana, and attended UL-Lafayette in the late 90’s before transferring to another university to play football. After finishing with a degree in sports medicine, he found himself working as a football coach for a Baton Rouge area high school. Before long, he was moving to North Dakota to take an assistant coaching position at Jamestown College.
“What better than to have one of our own come in and breathe some life into our program,” commented Walker in a press conference where he introduced Jason Devereaux as UL-Lafayette’s new head coach.
“This is surreal,” said Devereaux. “To have the opportunity to come back home and coach the Ragin Cajuns is a real honor. And it beats playing football up north in October. I can still wear short sleeve shirts here.”
Jason Devereaux has signed a three year contract with UL-Lafayette. While the Ragin’ Cajuns don’t have BCS Championshp expectations right now, it’s definitely something that they are hopeful about in the future.
“I think we can get some solid recruits here and build a good program in the next five years. I think winning the Sun Belt Conference at some point in the next three years would help,” said Devereaux. “I plan to increase our exposure. Visiting some bigger schools and hopefully bringing some high profile schools here. We have Georgia and Ole Miss on the schedule this season, so we’re going to build off that. Maybe we can get an in-state rivalry game with LSU at some point.”
Big words from the new coach? Let’s hope he delivers.

Georgia Makes Quick Work of UL-Lafayette
Caleb King runs in for his third touchdown against UL-Lafayette
Athens, GA – The Ragin' Cajuns started the 2010 season on a sour note with a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The contest was over before it started as running back Caleb King helped propel his team to a 31-0 lead going in at halftime.
“We did not want to give this team any false hope,” commented King after the game. “Coach said we needed to hit the ground running and we did. If you let a team hang around long enough, they start believing they can beat you and eventually, they might.”
After a silent first quarter, King finished the game with over 150 yards on the ground and four total touchdowns in Georgia's victory.
UL-Lafayette didn't go away quietly as they managed to get on the board in the third quarter when quarterback Chris Masson connected with Javone Lawson for an 80 yard touchdown.
UL-Lafayette head coach Jason Devereaux remained hopeful even after the devastating loss.
“I think our guys got overwhelmed. We started out okay, holding Georgia to just 10 points, but a few turnovers later, things just sort of snowballed out of control. There were penalties on third down, the offensive line seemed to be slacking off a bit. Chris got sacked about four times. But I think the real game changer for us was poor clock management. I think the we only had the ball for about 10 minutes. But, what's done is done. We have to look forward and bring our record back to .500. We know what we need to work on for our match up against Arkansas State and we're going to do that.”

HB Yobes Walker has impressive performance against Arkansas State
Running back Yobes Walker taking it in for six
Lafayette, LA– Today, the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns hosted their tenth Herbert Heymann Classic against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. This game is played in honor of Mr. Herbert Heymann, a man who had been a dedicated supporter of UL-Lafayette athletics and academics for 31 years. The Ragin Cajuns hosted Nicholls State in their first Herbert Heymann Classic in September 2001, five months after Heymann's death.
“We designate the first home game of every season to the Herbert Heymann Classic,” commented UL-Lafayette's director of athletics, David Walker. “He had done so much for the university, we felt that it would be fitting to honor him in some way.”
Arkansas State was hoping that UL-Lafayette was still reeling from their loss to Georgia last week, but the Ragin' Cajuns seemed to bounce back quite well. Especially, sophomore running back, Yobes Walker.
“After the game last week, I talked to Coach D and tried to figure out what I needed to do to get better for this game and help my team. He told me that I needed to wait on my blockers before bursting through the line and it seemed to help a little.”
A little is an understatement, Walker put up over 100 more yards against Arkansas State than he did against Georgia last week. The game seemed to be put on Walker's shoulders involuntarily after quarterback Chris Masson threw two interceptions in the first half.
Things seemed to go downhill for the Red Wolves after losing starting running back Frankie Jackson for the game due to a strained pectoral while trying to convert on third and five. Before the game was over, Arkansas State was down to their third string running back Sirgregory Thornton. The Ragin' Cajuns tied the game 7-7 on the ensuing drive after a 35 yard touchdown reception by tight end Ladarius Green.
The injury bug bit the Rajun Cajuns as well, they lost defensive end Jesse Broadnax to a broken collarbone. He's expected to be out for seven weeks.
UL-Lafayette started to pull away in the second half, going up 17-10 at the end of the third quarter. Walker put the nail in the coffin for the Ragin' Cajuns, scoring two touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter.
UL-Lafayette will enjoy their victory and they bye week before hosting conference for Middle Tennessee.
