Re: Football is Life...The Rest is just Details. (NCAA 11)
Michigan State Spartans 2012 Preview.
Spartans Offense
Returning Starters - 4
Quarterbacks
1. Joe Boisture 6'6'' 204lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Vince Mack 6'3'' 218lbs Sophomore
3. Vince Collier 6'0'' 194lbs Freshman
Clint Williamson 6'3'' 215lbs (RS)Sophomore
Grade - C+
With the graduation of Cousins, Boisture takes over the offense. Boisture is the most accurate Quarterback Coach Young has ever seen, but he just doesn't have enough arm strength to be a top NFL prospect.
Halfbacks
1. Larry Caper 5'11'' 223lbs Senior
2. Edwin Baker 5'9'' 201lbs (RS)Junior
3. David Spears 5'10'' 203lbs (RS)Senior
4. Andre Buford 5'8'' 185lbs (RS)Senior
Nick Hill 5'7'' 185lbs (RS)Sophomore
James Nash 6'1'' 213lbs (RS)Freshman
Noah Walker 5'11'' 197lbs Sophomore
Grade - B-
Caper returns for his Senior year to spearhead the Spartans offensive attack and with a young starting Quarterback, it looks like Caper will put up some serious numbers this year.
Fullbacks
1. Tony Evans 6'2'' 257lbs Freshman
2. Alex Williams 6'3'' 238lbs (RS)Freshman
Grade - D-
The Spartan coaching staff was very excited to get this 3 star fullback onto campus, but it looks like he will need a couple years before he becomes a dominate run blocker.
Wide Receivers
1. Lance Mansfield 6'0'' 173lbs Freshman
2. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 202lbs (RS)Sophomore
3. Donald Spencer 6'2'' 210lbs (RS)Junior
4. Jeremy Lanford 6'0'' 186lbs (RS)Sophomore
5. Thomas Anderson 6'4'' 175lbs Freshman
6. Noah Cason 6'2'' 175lbs (RS)Freshman
Kelvin Johnson 6'2'' 183lbs Freshman
Ernest McBride 6'3'' 187lbs Freshman
Grade - C-
Cunningham's departure left the Spartans lacking a solid pass catcher, but hopefully Coach Young will find one out of these young receivers. In the mean time, Young is try to recruit top receivers.
Tight Ends
1. Dion Sims 6'5'' 279lbs Senior
2. Cameron Taylor 6'7'' 220lbs Sophomore
3. Alex Williams 6'3'' 238lbs (RS)Freshman
Grade - C
Dion Sims is a solid pass catcher and a good blocker, but the Spartans have lacked a play maker here since Gantt left. This should be once of the Spartans coaching staff's biggest needs in recruiting.
Tackles
1LT. John Deyo 6'6'' 296lbs (RS)Senior
1RT. Zach Hueter 6'6'' 334lbs (RS)Senior
2LT. Skyler Schofner 6'7'' 289lbs (RS)Sophomore
2RT. Dave Hunt 6'4'' 319lbs Sophomore
3LT. Trey Williams 6'7'' 330lbs (RS)Freshman
Steve Lowe 6'7'' 315lbs Freshman
Grade - C+
Deyo has evolved into one of the best left tackles in the NCAA and that should help calm the young Quarterback down. Also, Hueter is a solid starter and a very good run blocker.
Guards
1LG. Ethan Ruhland 6'5'' 294lbs (RS)Senior
1RG. Chris McDonald 6'5'' 299lbs (RS)Senior
2LG. Micajah Reynolds 6'5'' 312lbs (RS)Junior
2RG. Travis Jackson 6'4'' 279lbs (RS)Sophomore
Ryan Ward 6'5'' 286lbs Freshman
Grade - C
Two first time starters are going to be run blocking for Caper, but there shouldn't be in cause for concern because Ruhland and McDonald looked every good in the preseason scrimmage.
Centers
1. Nate Klatt 6'4'' 296lbs (RS)Junior
2. Brock Miller 6'2'' 291lbs (RS)Freshman
Grade - C
Klatt is back this year and he has worked hard in the off-season to improve every facet of his game. Also, he has worked a lot with the young Quarterback to get the snap hand-offs correct.
Spartans Defense
returning starters - 7
Defensive Ends
1LE. William Gholston 6'7'' 253lbs (RS)Sophomore
1RE. Tyler Hoover 6'7'' 275lbs (RS)Senior
2LE. Tim Brown 6'6'' 207lbs Freshman
2RE. Marcus McCray 6'3'' 256lbs (RS)Freshman
3LE. Marcus Rush 6'3'' 232lbs (RS)Sophomore
3RE. Taylor Calero 6'3'' 238lbs Junior
Grade - C
Gholston is back after posting 9 sacks last season and will be a dominate force in this veteran Spartan defense. Jude left early for the Pro draft so that leaves Tyler Hoover to pick up the right side.
Defensive Tackles
1. Jerel Worthy 6'3'' 302lbs (RS)Senior
2. Blake Treadwell 6'3'' 281lbs (RS)Junior
3. Robert Mosley 6'6'' 316lbs Freshman
4. Anthony White 6'3'' 319lbs (RS)Sophomore
5. Christian Slaughter 6'1'' 268lbs Freshman
Grade - C+
Surprisingly, Worthy comes back for his Senior year and will lead what looks to be the best defensive line in the Big Ten. Also, true freshman, Robert Mosley may take over the number two Tackle spot.
Outside Linebackers
1LOLB. Steve Gardiner 6'1'' 226lbs (RS)Senior
1ROLB. Chris Norman 6'1'' 229lbs (RS)Junior
2LOLB. Jeremy Gainer 6'1'' 234lbs (RS)Junior
2ROLB. Jamie Austin 5'11'' 221lbs Freshman
3LOLB. Justin Wilson 6'0'' 222lbs (RS)Sophomore
Cedric Robinson 6'2'' 182lbs Freshman
Grade - C
Norman has worked hard over the off-season and is poised to have a big year tackling opposing ball carriers. Plus, Gardiner has grew into a solid Linebacker during the off-season and he will surprise some fans.
Middle Linebackers
1. Tyquan Hammock 6'0'' 254lbs (RS)Junior
2. Max Bullough 6'3'' 229lbs (RS)Sophomore
3. Clint Poole 6'3'' 214lbs (RS)Freshman
Grade - C+
Tyquan Hammock is developing into a very good 4-3 Linebacker and is making Greg Jones proud to have been his under study.
Corner Backs
1. Mitchell White 6'1'' 173lbs (RS)Senior
2. Chase Parker 5'9'' 178lbs (RS)Junior
3. Mylan Hicks 5'11'' 185lbs (RS)Sophomore
4. Justin Fry 6'1'' 175lbs (RS)Freshman
5. Kurtis Drummond 6'2'' 200lbs (RS)Sophomore
Brett McGill 6'1'' 180lbs (RS)Freshman
Chris Smith 5'11'' 172lbs Freshman
Grade - C
Besides Mitchell White, the Spartans are lacking at this position. Which must have the defensive staff worrying about playing against some very good Big Ten Quarterbacks, like Tate Forcier and Kevin Newsome.
Free Safeties
1. Isaiah Lewis 5'11'' 192lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Willie Mangum 5'11'' 173lbs Sophomore
Grade - C
Isaiah Lewis is the fastest player on the team and will be a key component in stopping the pass, but he is not very aware of what is going on around him which may hurt the Spartans in the long run.
Strong Safeties
1. Jairus Jones 6'1'' 218lbs (RS)Junior
2. Shawn Davis 6'3'' 200lbs Sophomore
David Walton 6'3'' 213lbs Freshman
Grade - C-
Jones looked strong last season and looks as strong, if not stronger this season. Jairus Jones will be one of the Spartans best tacklers and he can also hit pretty hard, making receivers think twice before going over the middle.
Spartans Special Teams
returning starters - 2
Kickers
1. Dan Conroy 5'10'' 189lbs (RS)Senior
2. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 177lbs Freshman
Grade - A
Conroy is the best kicker in the Big Ten, if not the country, and MSU will need every ounce of his talent to pull out close key games.
Punters
1. Dan Conroy 5'10'' 189lbs (RS)Senior
2. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 177lbs Freshman
Grade - A
For the second year in a row Conroy takes over punting duties, and will be an important variable in the Spartans ball control offense.
Kick Returners
1. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 202lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Edwin Baker 5'9'' 201lbs (RS)Junior
Grade - C
Mumphery will bring is 4.3 speed to the return game and will hopefully take pressure off of the offense.
Punt Returners
1. Edwin Baker 5'9'' 201lbs (RS)Junior
2. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 202lbs (RS)Sophomore
Grade - C+
Edwin Baker is one of the unsung heroes of MSU, being behind Caper on the depth chart for a couple year, he will prove himself this year by giving Caper and company a short field.
Overall - C
With the departure of some key players on the Spartans offense, it looks like the Spartans can't repeat their Big Ten championship season. But, Caper was most improved during the off-season and will step up to the challenge and carry the offense on his back. If the opposing team does stop Caper the passing game has a very solid pass catcher in Dion Sims, plus Boisture is accurate enough to fit the ball in some tight holes. Then, on the defensive side of the ball MSU will return 7 starters, two of which are 1st team All-NCAA All Americans. So even thought MSU has lost some very good player, it doesn't look like they are going to slow down in their climb to the top of the Big Ten.
