Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy

The Paul Bunyan–Governor of Michigan Trophy is a college rivalry trophy awarded to the winner of the annual American football game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines. The winner retains possession of the trophy until the next year's game. Michigan State currently holds the trophy with their 26–20 victory in East Lansing, on October 3, 2009.

The naming of the trophy after the mythical giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan reflects Michigan's history as a major lumber-producing state. The trophy was first presented in 1953 (State's first year as a full Big Ten member) by then-governor G. Mennen Williams, and is a four-foot-high wooden statue on a five-foot-high base.

The Paul Bunyan Trophy is not to be confused with Paul Bunyan's Axe, which is annually given to the winner of the game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, both of which are also in the Big Ten Conference.

Preview:
This rivalry is always a hard fought battle and this year appears to be no different, as both teams are 1-0 in conference play. The key to this game is whether the defense will step up, as in the past weeks, and shut down this deadly spread attack Michigan has. Or will Cousin and company be able to produce enough points to keep up. Let the battle for the Paul Bunyan trophy begin!

Review:
This game was hard fought through out, but the Spartans just couldn't pull it off in the end. L. Caper sure made a difference carrying the ball 11 times for 134 yards before he went out with broken ribs, which ended the running game MSU had going. Plus, it put all of the weight on K. Cousins shoulders and he just couldn't produce. This loss is a heart breaking one for MSU fans, destroying their hopes for an undefeated season and dropping them to .500 in conference play.

L. Caper(#22) made a difference in his first game out, but sadly for MSU fans went out with broken ribs.

D. Spears(#26) scampers in from 4 yards out. This about the only production MSU's running game was able to muster without L. Caper in.

B. Cunningham(#3) catches this 18 yard toss from K. Cousins to put the Spartans up 21-17 late in the 3rd quarter.

This should be a relatively easy one for MSU. The Fighting Illini are not doing to hot this season, as their record shows, and MSU has been on a roll the last couple week. This is a perfect match up for the Spartans to rebound from their loss and work some kinks out of their system before tougher conference play.

Review:
MSU cruised to an easy victory over Illinois, bringing them up to 5-1(2-1). This was a classic football game, the way it would've been played in the 50s, lots of running and little passing. L. Caper once again showed up to play for this game, running for close to 200 yards and he didn't get injured.

C. Rucker(#29) starts the scoring off by intercepting a J. Charest pass and taking the other way for a touchdown.

L. Caper(#22) has a little fun with the mascot and a little fun on the ground, racking up 194 yards.

L. Capers(#22) third rushing touchdown of the evening ties a school record.
