4-2-5 in East Lansing?

Today Coach Young said, " We will be running the 4-2-5 this year, We will be attacking the offense more." When asked about why switching it now he said," I've wanted to do it for awhile, but I was just never confident in the type of players we had and we didn't have enough depth at safety." The 4-2-5 is the same defense TCU runs and has been very good for them, so hopefully Coach Young and the staff can implement it right in the off-season.

2015 Michigan State Spartans Preview

Spartans Offense

returning starters - 3

Quarterbacks
1. Vince Mack 6'3'' 221lbs (RS)Senior
2. Vince Collier 6'0'' 196lbs (RS)Junior
3. Marques Griffith 6'2'' 171lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
With Joe Boisture gone Vince Mack steps up into the driver seat and may not be able to live up to Boisture's performance last year, but he will do just fine.

Halfbacks
1. Noah Walker 5'11'' 203lbs (RS)Senior
2. James Nash 6'1'' 214lbs (RS)Senior
3. Darrell Burnette 5'11'' 217lbs (RS)Freshman
Chad Huffman 5'11'' 211lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Noah Walker edges last years starter, James Nash, by his performance in the off-season. Walker is a promising Halfback who isn't afraid of contact and has the speed to break big runs, if he can stay healthy he will most likely run for over 1,000 yards

Fullbacks
1. Tony Evans 6'2'' 266lbs Senior
2. Alex Williams 6'3'' 246lbs (RS)Senior
Bennie Payne 5'10'' 244lbs Freshman

Grade - D+
Tony Evans has been a fantastic fullback who has blocked for the likes of Caper and Baker and has even caught a couple passes himself, he has surely left his footprint on the MSU program. Also don't forget about the walk-on, Alex Williams, who has been a silent contributor to the MSU offense.

Wide Receiver
1. Blake Prince 5'10'' 178lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Lance Mansfield 6'0'' 177lbs Senior
3. Ernest McBride 6'3'' 189lbs (RS)Senior
4. Adam Perkins 6'0'' 175lbs (RS)Sophomore
5. Jason Suggs 6'3'' 180lbs (RS)Sophomore
6. Thomas Anderson 6'4'' 183lbs (RS)Junior
Noah Cason 6'2'' 179lbs (RS)Senior
Blake Mills 5'11'' 173lbs (RS)Freshman
Evan Murphy 6'2'' 162lbs Freshman
Jonathan Long 6'0'' 190lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Blake Prince is the star of this offense and may get national attention this year, with all the receptions he will be getting. Also, don't forget about Adam Perkins who came in the same class Prince did. Perkins is a sure handed slot receiver who can break tackles regularly.

Tight Ends
1. Justin Rosario 6'2'' 254lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Keith Morrow 6'5'' 269lbs (RS)Freshman
3. Alex Williams 6'3'' 246lbs (RS)Senior

Grade - C+
Last year Godfrey and Taylor had decent years catching pass, but something was missing from MSU's Tight Ends. Rosario and Morrow bring better pass catching skills, plus they are very powerful run blockers.

Tackles
1LT. Trey Williams 6'7'' 334lbs (RS)Senior
1RT. Dave Hunt 6'4'' 328lbs (RS)Senior
2LT. Brian Whitmore 6'5'' 315lbs (RS)Freshman
2RT. Michael Fields 6'5'' 316lbs (RS)Senior
Stephen Crosby 6'5'' 294lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
This may be Michigan State's weakness, the ability to protect the Quarterback, and teams will surely expose it this year.

Guards
1LG. Dominique Price 6'5'' 328lbs Senior
1RG. Joe Wiggins 6'5'' 295lbs (RS)Senior
2LG. Kevin Smith 6'4'' 310lbs (RS)Sophomore
2RG. Ryan Ward 6'5'' 303lbs (RS)Junior
3RG. Joey Ward 6'1'' 301lbs (RS)Sophomore
Jamaal Freeman 6'6'' 306lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Although the Spartans have weak tackles they make up for it in the interior. With one of the best guards in the nation, Dominique Price, and a very good transfer from North Carolina, Joe Wiggins.

Centers
1. James Smith 6'0'' 288lbs Sophomore
2. Brock Miller 6'2'' 301lbs (RS)Senior

Grade - B-
James Smith is only a Sophomore, but he is getting a lot of praise from the coaching staff and Big Ten Nose Tackles.

Spartans Defense
returning starters - 8

Defensive Ends
1LE. Tim Brown 6'6'' 216lbs Senior
1RE. Marcus McCray 6'3'' 268lbs (RS)Senior

2LE. Dustin Watson 6'1'' 233lbs (RS)Freshman
2RE. Brian Dowdell 6'4'' 226lbs Sophomore
Brandon Graham 6'2'' 247lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
The Lombardi trophy winner returns for his Senior year and is poised to make an even bigger splash. Also McCray will be getting into the back field a lot, with all the focus on Brown.

Defensive Tackles
1. George Thompson 6'4'' 282lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Robert Mosley 6'6'' 325lbs (RS)Junior

3. Christian Slaughter 6'1'' 278lbs Senior
4. Charles Palmer 6'3'' 294lbs Freshman
5. Kurt Berry 6'4'' 279lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Thompson and Mosley make a very good team, on the interior of the defensive line, last year and will be major play makers in this new 4-2-5 defense this year.

Linebackers
1. Jamie Austin 5'11'' 229lbs Senior
2. Matt Brooks 6'5'' 228lbs Senior

3. Garth Evans 6'0'' 229lbs (RS)Freshman
4. Cedric Robinson 6'2'' 189lbs (RS)Junior
5. Quinton Henry 6'2'' 214lbs (RS)Freshman
6. Clint Poole 6'3'' 223lbs (RS)Senior
Tim Jenkins 6'3'' 235lbs (RS)Freshman
Jarrod Whitworth 6'3'' 230lbs Freshman
Jonathan Martin 6'1'' 225lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
MSU has a ton of good linebackers, but only 2 will be on the field in the 4-2-5. So expect MSU to sub in and out linebackers often.

Corner Backs
1. Justin Fry 6'1'' 176lbs (RS)Senior
2. LaRue Walker 5'9'' 181lbs Senior

3. Marcello Sanders 6'1'' 185lbs Junior
4. Brett McGill 6'1'' 180lbs (RS)Senior

Grade - B-
Justin Fry is the leader of this defense, with his work ethic and very good awareness on the field. Also, Marcello Sanders will be taking over the second strong safety spot in this 4-2-5.

Free Safeties
1. Chris Smith 5'11'' 175lbs (RS)Junior
2. Mickey Mayfield 6'2'' 206lbs Junior
Roger Patton 6'1'' 181lbs Freshman

Grade - C
Chris Smith makes the move from Coner Back to Free Safety and appears to have made it very well, so well it appears to have been his position he was made for. Also, watch out for the 5th best player in the recruiting class last year, Roger Patton, who has many fans excited about next year when he starts.

Strong Safeties
1. Marques Simon 6'3'' 199lbs (RS)Freshman
2. David Walton 6'3'' 217lbs (RS)Junior
3. Adam Britt 6'1'' 196lbs Freshman
Pat Mitchell 5'11'' 201lbs Sophomore

Grade - C
This is the most important position in the 4-2-5 and the Spartans have a very good player to play it. Marques Simon was one of the top safeties in his recruiting class and with the Spartans coaching staff he may now be the best, Simon will make a very good rover in this 4-2-5.

Spartans Special Teams
returning starters - 2

Kickers
1. Casey Long 5'11'' 180lbs Junior
2. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 187lbs (RS)Junior

Grade - B-
For the second year in a row Casey Long is a preseason All-American, even after a rough year last year.

Punters
1. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 187lbs (RS)Junior
2. Casey Long 5'11'' 180lbs Junior

Grade - C+
Jonathan Mason has turned into one of the best punters to go through MSU, but does't get the national exposure he deserves.

Kick Returners
1. Blake Mills 5'11'' 173lbs (RS)Freshman
2. Darrell Burnette 5'11'' 217lbs (RS)Freshman

Grade - C
With Mumphery gone the kick returning might not be as explosive, but Blake Mills has turned the heads of the coaches. Who say he may be even faster then Mumphery.

Punt Returners
1. Blake Mills 5'11'' 173lbs (RS)Freshman
2. LaRue Walker 5'9'' 181lbs Senior

Grade - C
Mills will be using his speed in returning punts, hopefully he can fill Mumphery's shoes.

Overall Grade - C+
With MSU's conversion from the 4-3 to the 4-2-5 it will be an important season for MSU. Hopefully this defense has learned enough to spot imposing offenses, because this may be one of the best teams in East Lansing and it would be a shame to let the opportunity go by because of a defensive transition. But we suspect the coaching staff has done a great job and has these boys more than read for this season and if that is the case the Spartans will be in the national title hunt.

This is the fun part about it.... I'm playing with players I recruited, so now it really is my team.

I'm so happy you don't play my Gophers this year! Haha, looks to be a pretty tough schedule as always in the Big Ten, good luck.
