2016 Michigan State Spartans Preview

Spartans Offense

returning starters - 4

Quarterbacks
1. Vince Collier 6'0'' 196lbs (RS)Senior
2. Marques Griffith 6'2'' 175lbs (RS)Freshman
Kyle Armstrong 6'3'' 191lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Vince Collier is back after a very underwhelming Junior year, but with the progression of Prince and the emergence of Burnette this offense looks to be one of the best in the Big Ten. Also, the best signing of Coach Young's career, Kyle Armstrong is red shirted this year. But is still making more buzz then anybody as soon as he stepped onto campus.

Halfbacks
1. Darrell Burnette 5'11'' 218lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Chad Huffman 5'11'' 213lbs (RS)Freshman
3. Bennie Payne 5'10'' 250lbs (RS)Freshman
Andrew Young 6'0'' 215lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Darrell Burnette is one of the young rising stars of the NCAA, so keep an eye on him because he may put up some good stats. Also Chad Huffman is just as good as Burnette and may see a chunk off play time. Then there is Andrew Young which may be Coach Young's second best signing ever, Armstrong and Young will make a very good tandem in the near future maybe even bringing Michigan State a National Championship.

Fullbacks
1. Bennie Payne 5'10'' 250lbs (RS)Freshman
2. Martin McCray 5'11'' 218lbs Sophomore

Grade - D
Tony Evans departure has hurt this team especially the run game, but Bennie Payne was brought in. Although Payne was a two star he plays with a chip on his shoulder making him look more like a 4 star, he may end his career as one of the most popular Michigan State players on this team.

Wide Receivers
1. Blake Prince 5'10'' 178lbs (RS)Junior
2. Adam Perkins 6'0'' 176lbs (RS)Junior
3. Jonathan Long 6'0'' 193lbs (RS)Freshman
4. Jason Suggs 6'3'' 180lbs (RS)Junior
5. Thomas Anderson 6'4'' 184lbs (RS)Senior
6. Blake Mills 5'11'' 173lbs (RS)Sophomore
Evan Murphy 6'2'' 167lbs (RS)Freshman
Nate Snyder 6'3'' 204lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Blake Prince. That name strikes fear into opposing defenses and there is no way to stop him and now that he is back for his Junior year teams will have to put a lot more focus on him. With Prince getting a lot off attention Adam Perkins may see some very good numbers along with Jonathan Long.

Tight Ends
1. Justin Rosario 6'2'' 255lbs (RS)Junior
2. Keith Morrow 6'5'' 272lbs (RS)Sophomore
3. Martin McCray 5'11'' 218lbs Sophomore

Grade - B-
Justin Rosario has flown under the radar and is one of the most underrated tight ends, with very good hands and the ability to always fall forward. Plus, Keith Morrow would be the leading receiver on many FBS programs.... Michigan State is very blessed at tight end with these two starting.

Tackles
1LT. Stephen Crosby 6'5'' 299lbs (RS)Freshman
1RT. Scott Rushing 6'8'' 315lbs Junior
2LT. Brain Whitmore 6'5'' 319lbs (RS)Sophomore
Chuck Cross 6'2'' 288lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
An nearly new offensive line has posed one of the biggest question marks for this 2016 team, will they be able to provide sufficient pass protection and powerful run blocking? The only way to find out is watch them on the field.

Guards
1LG. Jamaal Freeman 6'6'' 310lbs (RS)Freshman
1RG. George Madison 6'2'' 279lbs Junior
2LG. Kevin Smith 6'4'' 312lbs (RS)Junior
2RG. Ryan Ward 6'5'' 304lbs (RS)Senior
3RG. Joey Ward 6'1'' 306lbs (RS)Junior

Grade - C+
Pretty much the same story as the tackle position, but a juco junior with provide more of a safety curtain.

Centers
1. James Smith 6'0'' 290lbs Junior
2. David Manning 6'3'' 291lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
James Smith has been a fantastic center for the Spartans and is a role model to all of the young lineman on this team. He will need to be the leader of this o-line if the want to succeed and let the star players flourish.

Spartans Defense
returning starters - 4

Defensive Ends
1LE. Brandon Graham 6'2'' 256lbs (RS)Freshman
1RE. Tom Curtis 6'5'' 243lbs Freshman
2LE. Dustin Watson 6'1'' 239lbs (RS)Sophomore
2RE. Brian Dowdell 6'4'' 229lbs Junior

Grade - C
Graham and Curtis were premier pass rushers in high school but they have average run stopping ability. These two don't need to worry about stopping the run with Mosley and Thompson playing on the inside, they just need to pin their ears back and protect the very vulnerable secondary.

Defensive Tackles
1. George Thompson 6'4'' 285lbs (RS)Junior
2. Robert Mosley 6'6'' 327lbs (RS)Senior

3. Kurt Berry 6'4'' 286lbs (RS)Freshman
4. Charles Palmer 6'3'' 297lbs Sophomore

Grade - B-
The dynamic duo of Thompson and Mosley are returning for their final go as a team. They will surely be an instrumental part of this defense, if the make plays the Spartans will most likely win.

Linebackers
1OLB. Jarrod Whitworth 6'3'' 231lbs (RS)Freshman
1MLB. Jonathan Martin 6'1'' 229lbs (RS)Freshman
2OLB. Cedric Robinson 6'2'' 191lbs (RS)Senior
2MLB. Garth Evans 6'0'' 231lbs (RS)Sophomore
3OLB. Quinton Henry 6'2'' 216lbs (RS)Sophomore
4OLB. Tim Jenkins 6'3'' 238lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - C+
The Spartans have had very good luck at recruiting linebackers and this corps can prove it. Although they are young they are some of the best linebackers to come through Michigan State in quite some time. Whitworth was a very sought after outside linebacker by all the Big Ten teams for his play recognition and his ability to cover athletic tight ends. Jonathan Martin came into MSU as an outside linebacker, but the staff thought his skill set was better in the middle and boy has he proven them right. Martin almost never misses a tackle and is very rarely in the wrong place.

Corner Backs
1. Marcello Sanders 6'1'' 185lbs Senior
2. Corey Davis 6'1'' 186lbs Freshman
3. Mike Hemphill 5'11'' 189lbs Sophomore
4. Chris Smith 5'11'' 175lbs (RS)Senior
5. Kevin Fisher 6'1'' 185lbs Freshman
Matt Sullivan 5'11'' 193lbs Freshman
Perry Greenwood 6'1'' 201lbs Freshman

Grade - D+
The position is the weak link of this entire team, but is very young so they will get a lot better. But for now do not be surprised if the Spartans give up a lot of passing yards.

Free Safeties
1. Roger Patton 6'1'' 184lbs (RS)Freshman
2. Mickey Mayfield 6'2'' 206lbs Senior
3. Chris Smith 5'11'' 175lbs (RS)Senior

Grade - C+
Another young rising star of this defense has finally taken over the starting spot. Patton was the talk of the town and will need to live up to this hype because of the weak DBs.

Strong Safeties
1. Marques Simon 6'3'' 200lbs (RS)Sophomore
2. Pat Mitchell 5'11'' 202lbs (RS)Sophomore
3. David Walton 6'3'' 217lbs (RS)Senior
Adam Britt 6'1'' 197lbs Sophomore
Germara Horton 6'2'' 203lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
Marques Simon is already and All-American and will prove that by leading this very young secondary with a lot of play makers and some very consistent players. Pat Mitchell will be the rover in this 4-2-5 and has a very good skill set for that, with very good pass rushing skills and solid tackling. Also Coach Young brought in another promising young player in Germara Horton, but since Simon has the job locked down the staff decided to red shirt him.

Spartans Special Teams
returning starters - 2

Kicker
1. Casey Long 5'11'' 182lbs Senior
2. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 190lbs (RS)Senior

Grade - B
Long has been a very solid kicker and will most likely play on Sundays.

Punter
1. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 190lbs (RS)Senior
2. Casey Long 5'11'' 182lbs Senior

Grade - B-
The big-footed punter, Jonathan Mason, hasn't gotten enough attention for what he does week in and week out.

Kick Returners
1KR. Jonathan Long 6'0'' 193lbs (RS)Freshman
1PR. Blake Prince 5'10'' 178lbs (RS)Junior
2KR. Jason Suggs 6'3'' 180lbs (RS)Junior

Grade - C+
After Blake Mills' fumbling problems, Long and Prince will take over the returning duties.

Overall Rating - C+
Coach Young heads into his 7th year as the head man of the Michigan State Spartans and boy has he had some good season. Here is just a quick glimpse at his stats.

Career Record: 60-16 (0.789)
Winning seasons: 6
Longest Win Streak: 14
Record vs Top 25: 23-13 (0.638)
Record vs Rivals: 16-7 (0.696)
Bowl Record: 4-2 (0.667)
Conference Titles: 1
National Titles: 0

But the one thing he is missing is a National Championship. This year it appears he has gotten the key pieces in place and is poised to make it all the way in 3 years at the most. He has one of the best quarterbacks coming out of high school, Kyle Armstrong, red shirted behind a top notched quarterback. He has a very young backfield with potential to rival the Pony Express and he has a future hall of fame wide receiver in Blake Prince, with some very young talent below him. Don't forget about the defense, every year they seem to be under rated but Coach Young finds the perfect spot for his players skills and they flourish under the aggressive 4-2-5. Needless to say the expectations are very high in East Lansing, so grab your tickets and hang on it's gonna be a hell of a ride.

I don't think I've ever commented on this dynasty which is a shame since it's one of the better ones going.

You do good work. I couldn't go through all 56 pages, but I went back about 10-15 pages and really like what I read. Keep it up! And good luck in 2013, bring home a natty!
