All-American CB Patrick Peterson had a 31 yard interception return for a touchdown that netted LSU a 14-10 lead at the half.
LSU's first possession of the second half started out with Stevan Ridley picking up his biggest run of the night of 26 yards, but ended quickly on the next play. Shepard caught a pass on a screen across the middle turned up field and was hit by Carolina's MLB Kevin Reddick forcing a fumble. Just four plays later North Carolina scored the go ahead touchdown. After a quick three-and-out North Carolina got the ball back and scored in just nine plays to go up 24-14.
For Shepard it was a game of up and down emotions. With what started out looking like the start of a very impressive night turned into disaster as UNC turned the Shepard turnover into 14 quick points and the eventual loss for the Tigers.
LSU will head to Vanderbilt next week to open up their SEC Conference schedule. UNC has a bye.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Vanderbilt hosted the 22nd ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday to kick off the 2010 SEC schedule.
After Vanderbilt's opening 62 yard drive lead to a field goal, LSU turned right around and scored on their first play from scrimmage. Senior halfback Stevan Ridley broke a run of 75 yards that would help cap off LSU's first win of the season.
In the second quarter of Saturday's game, LSU QB Jordan Jefferson scored two consecutive rushing touchdowns, capping solid drives, to help LSU build a solid 21-6 lead at the half.
Vanderbilt added a touchdown midway through the 3rd quarter on a 78 yard reception from tailback Zac Stacy. But it would prove to be too little as Vanderbilt fell 31-15.
Up next for Vanderbilt a trip to Mississippi where they will meet the Rebels. For LSU they will travel to Starkville to take on Mississippi State.
