2010 NC State Season Preview
Coach O'Brien Looks to Save His Job
OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW
The key to the offense is the play of junior quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson was an ACC first-team QB in his freshman year and if he can have another great year, NC State should make a bowl game. Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer are great receivers and should provide Wilson with capable catchers. If not, then things may go southward. NC State's running backs are mediocre, so the rushing attack will not exactly inflict fear into opponents' minds. The offensive line is decent, but not great, either.
Starters:
QB Russell Wilson, JR - 86
HB Curtis Underwood, JR - 78
FB Taylor Gentry, JR - 74
WR Jarvis Williams, SR - 89
WR Owen Spencer, SR - 88
TE George Bryan, JR - 85
LT Jake Vermiglio, SR - 79
LG Andrew Wallace, SO - 81
C Camden Wentz, SO - 78
RG R.J. Mattes, SO - 82
RT Same Jones, FR - 77
K Josh Czalkowski, SR - 85
DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW
NC State's defense was, simply put, bad last year. This year's edition of the Wolfpack defense doesn't look that great, either, although it should be better than last year. NC State's strength is at linebacker, where middle linebacker Nate Irving leads the way.
Starters:
LE Michael Lemon, SR - 75
RE Audi Augustin, SR - 73
DT J.R. Sweezy, JR - 76
DT Natanu Mageo, SR - 76
LOLB Audie Cole, JR - 84
MLB Nate Irving, SR - 89
ROLB Dwayne Maddox, JR - 76
CB C.J. Wilson, SO - 74
CB Rashard Smith, SO - 72
FS Brandan Bishop, SO - 74
SS Earl Wolff, SO - 77
P Chris Ward, FR - 82
2010 West Virginia Season Preview
West Virginia Looks to Finally Break Out
OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW
After consecutive 9-4 seasons in the first two years under head coach Bill Stewart, West Virginia will look to finally break out and win the Big East this year. However, it will be difficult with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh also expected to be strong. The offense looks very capable of succeeding with Noel Devine leading the way behind a strong offensive line. The question mark is at quarterback as sophomore Geno Smith will take the reins from departing senior Jarrett Brown. Smith took over last year after Brown left with an injury in last year's Gator Bowl loss at halftime. Brown performed decently, but he will need to play very well this year if the Mountaineers hope to win the Big East.
Starters:
QB Geno Smith, SO - 85
HB Noel Devine, SR - 96
FB Ryan Clarke, SO - 73
WR Jock Sanders, SR - 90
WR Bradley Starks, JR - 86
TE Tyler Urban, JR - 80
LT Don Barclay, JR - 90
LG Josh Jenkins, JR - 90
C Joseph Madsen, SO - 85
RG Eric Jobe, SR - 85
RT Matt Timmerman, SR - 82
K Tyler Bitancurt, SO - 91
DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW
West Virginia's defense looks to be the weak link this year. The unit has its bright spots like linebacker J.T. Thomas, but could struggle if things don't get clicking. Every starter on the defensive side of the ball is an upperclassmen, so this unit is ripe with experience, which could prove valuable this year.
Starters:
LE Julian Miller, JR - 84
RE Scooter Berry, SR - 85
DT Chris Neild, SR - 86
LOLB Pat Lazear, SR - 84
MLB Najee Goode, JR - 81
MLB Anthony Leonard, SR - 78
ROLB J.T. Thomas, SR - 90
CB Brandon Hogan, SR - 88
CB Keith Tandy, JR - 81
FS Robert Sands, JR - 87
SS Sidney Glover, SR - 87
P Gregg Pugnetti, SR - 86
