West Virginia Downs South Florida

West Virginia has struggled defeating South Florida since the Bulls joined the conference six seasons ago. In 2006, with an injured Pat White, the Mountaineers lost out on a chance to win the Big East and attain a BCS bowl bid when they lost 24-19 at home. The next season the two teams were matched up in an early-season Friday night showdown in Tampa, which the Bulls won 21-13. After beating the Bulls in Morgantown in 2008 13-7 last season, WVU met a similar fate last year as they fell in Tampa to the Bulls 30-19.

But this year things were different. West Virginia jumped out to a 7-0 lead early on and led 14-0 at halftime with the USF offense showing little sign of life tonight. The lead would be extended further when Logan Heastie caught a 20-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it a three-touchdown WVU lead.

The Bulls would show life late in the game, scoring two touchdowns in the final quarter, but it would not be enough as the Mountaineers would escape 21-13 (Ironically, the same score as WVU's loss in 2007).

The game was clinched when WVU quarterback Geno Smith scrambled on a third-and-20 late in the game to pick up a first down. The new set of downs gave the Mountaineers the victory as a couple of kneel-downs sealed the Mountaineers victory.

With this loss, the Bulls suffer their second consecutive loss. They were pasted by Syracuse last week 28-6 after starting out 4-0 this season. Next week West Virginia takes on Syracuse in Morgantown as the two teams will battle for the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. The Orange have surprised many analysts this season as Doug Marrone's team has started out this season 4-1 with their lone loss coming at Washington 34-24.

The game-sealing scramble by QB Geno Smith:

Great job with the double dynasty going here. Thought about doing that myself, but I was thinking about being someone completely horrid (like Idaho or someone) along with my Iowa State one, but man, I spend too much time updating as it is. Kudos for you for taking on double duties.

Originally, I figured that I would run two separate dynasties, but this makes it easier in some ways in that I only have to post the top 25/standings/ect. once every two games most of the time since I've got two games most weeks (one NC State and one WVU). It's kind of nice, too, because it keeps things fresh since you're not playing with the same team every game as you would in a one-team dynasty.

My only fear is WVU and NC State meeting up in the Orange Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, or the Meineke Car Care Bowl, all of which could potentially pit an ACC team against a Big East team (although the Big East Champion is treated as an at-large pick in the BCS selection and, as such, could be picked up by any of the BCS bowls). I guess NC State and WVU could also meet up in the National Championship Game, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Darrell Davis Catapults Wolfpack to a Victory

Today was a record-setting game on both sides of the ball. Both teams piled up points, yards, and first downs as the NC State Wolfpack defeated their rivals, the East Carolina Pirates, by a score of 42-35.

Darrell Davis was a record-setter on the NC State side of the ball as the senior wide receiver tallied 212 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions. Davis' three touchdowns came from 57, 53, and 75 yards out respectively as he provided home run after home run for the Wolfpack.

They would need it, too, as ECU quarterback Josh Jordan set an ECU school record with 553 passing yards. He completed 45 of 58 pass attempts and threw four touchdowns on the day. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Jordan was backed up by a nonexistent ECU rushing attack which netted all of eight yards. Thus, despite Jordan's tremendous performance, the Pirates could not take advantage as they lost 42-35.

The Pirates held a 35-28 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the NC State defense, which had allowed the Pirates to score 25 third quarter points, shut them down while Brandon Barnes scored a couple touchdowns to give the Wolfpack a one-score lead for good.

NC State has a bye week next week before taking on the Florida Seminoles on Thursday night, the 21st of October in Raleigh.

Darrell Davis scores from 75 yards out:

You have both teams playing great. WVU win over USF was huge, getting that Top-25 victory.

We've been winning by the skin of our teeth somehow. I just hope it continues.

WVU is actually the #1-rated Big East team in this game, anyways, so I really should have been the favorite this season instead of Pittsburgh.
