Re: Duel in the Desert - Arizona & Arizona State Dual Dynasty

5 Steps to Victory
+ Keep Cal Jr. HB Shane Vereen in check
NO - Vereen had 108 rushing yards and even threw a 4-yard TD.

+ Protect AZ Jr. QB Nick Foles as Cal has a great d-line
NO - Foles went down 3 times

+ Blitz up the middle against Cal's Freshman center
YES - Arizona countered with 3 sacks and hit Riley hard all game

+ Don't get burned by Cal Jr. TE Anthony Miller (86 ovr, 84 spd)
YES - Miller had 41 yards and a touchdown but he didn't torch AZ

+ Keep AZ Sr. HB Nic Grigsby in the flow and get him plenty of touches (20+)
NO - Only 15 carries due to an early deficit, but had 78 yards (5.2 avg)

Arizona Fight Back to Win 41-31

The Wildcats would be trailing 21-3 with 1:32 in the 2nd quarter remaining but they flipped the switch and got things going. Jr. QB Nick Foles threw two touchdowns (49 & 61 yds) to make it 21-17. Cal would get a late field goal to make it 24-17 at the half but the momentum had shifted sides.

Arizona would get a field goal to make it 24-20 but Cal would silence the home crowd with a 36-yard receiving touchdown by M. Calvin to make it 31-20 and it looked at though the Wildcats were on the brinks of losing their first game.

Foles would lead the troops down the field and then do it himself on a 14-yard touchdown run. Arizona would go for two and convert to make it 31-28 heading into the 4th quarter.

In the fourth Cal got sloppy with the football and committed three turnovers on a fumble and two interceptions by AZ CB Trevin Wade. Turnovers definitely cost Cal the game, as two of them came deep in Arizona territory.

Foles would complete his five touchdown day by tossing scores to Bug Wright & David Douglas, who both had two receiving touchdowns on the day.

Huge win for Arizona and they host Oregon St. next week looking to improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10.

Arizona State 45 - Oregon 7

Tempe, AZ

Arizona State came into yesterday's game with a bad taste in their mouth. After a 28-19 point loss in which they had several chances to upset the #9 team in the nation they Sun Devils looked to start Pac-10 play with a bang and that's just what they did.

The game started out with both teams trading punts for the majority of the 1st half until Oregon HB LaMichael James scampered 4yds to break the stalemate at the end of the 1st quarter. In typical Arizona State fashion Steven Threet and the offense responded with a 1yd run TD rush by HB Cameron Marshall to tie the game at 7-7. 2 plays later SO LB Vontaze Burfict made the play of the game. The impact LB read the option, jumped the pitch and returned it 18 yds for the TD (I had him on player lock. It was probably the best play I've ever made in my NCAA history).

EA Sports: NCAA Football 11 Video

The Sun Devil defense would continue to be stout, this time with DT Lawrence Guy returning another fumble caused by Burfict 91yds to put them up 21-7. On the opening play of the 2nd half Steven Threet put the game out of reach for the Ducks hitting WR Aaron Pifugart on a streak for a 74yd TD. Arizona State would 2 more TDs, another defensive score by the SR FS to improve to 4-1 and 1-0 in the Pac-10.

Next up is a trip to Oregon State to face the Rodger brothers.

Edit: Jacquiz Rodgers is out 7 weeks with a broken foot. Damn you EA!!!

Oregon State 10 - Arizona State 0

Corvallis, OR

On paper it looked like the Arizona State Sun Devils would have easily disposed of a Jacquiz Rodger-less Beaver team. Saturday's event reminded everyone that the game isn't played on paper as the Sun Devils were shut out 10-0.

Steven Threet was under constant pressure all game from the Beaver defense and was forced into 4 INTs before he was replaced in the 3rd quarter. After a 1st half that only saw Oregon St get on the board with a 48yd FG. In what seems like a trend the 1st half struggles looked to be beyond the Sun Devils as they emerged from the locker-room in the 2nd half and marched right down to the Beaver 31yd line until Threet threw a WR screen that was picked and returned to the house for the 10-0 lead. Arizona State would manage 2 more drives into Beaver territory, one resulting in a missed FG and the other interception #5. This time by backup QB Brock Osweiler who replaced an ineffective Threet and threw for 87yds in a quarter.

This sets up a huge game for the Sun Devils as they travel to Washington to face Jake Locker and his huskies.

Arizona State 27 - Washington 0

Seattle, Washington

After a disapointing loss in Corvallis the Sun Devils traveled to Seattle, WA and blanked the Huskies 27-0 in what might have been their best performance to date.

Arizona State was able to shake their normal 1st half jitters as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead and held on for the rest of the game behind a defense that battered future NFL 1st round pick Jake Locker. AZ ST QB Steven Threet managed the game to the of 251yds and no INTs while the dynamic LB duo of Vontaze Burfict & Brandon Magee terrorized the Huskies in holding Locker under 100yds passing.

After the bye week the Sun Devils will once again pack their bags and head to Berkley to take on Cal.
