Panthers look to break home loss streak at three

Turd Furgeson
Roar Senior Writer

Charlotte, N.C - Coming off their week six bye, the Panthers (2-3) will be back to full strength health-wise when they host the San Fransisco 49ers (3-3) this sunday at Bank of America Stadium,

The 49ers are on a two game win streak, mostly due to the defense. With 9 takeaways through 6 games, they rank 4th in the NFL. They'll look to hand Carolina its 4th straight home defeat this season, with the Panthers falling to the Bears at home in week 5, 30-24.

With LB Jon Beason and DE Charles Johnson now back from injuries, the Panthers hope their presence will equate to a much better defensive performance. The defense has struggled to contain opposing teams passing attacks the past few weeks and could use any boost they can get.

Week Seven
13 - 17

Charlotte, N.C - The Panthers (3-3) wont their first game at home this season after a 17-13 defeat of the 49ers (3-4) on sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

Panthers quarterback Matt Moore had a good game completing 62% of his passes, going 15 for 24 for 179 yards and a touchdown. Running back DeAngelo Williams also had a score today on a 50 yard run, but only gained 29 yards on his 14 other carries.

The 49ers had a 13-10 lead going into the 4th quarter, but with less than 8 minutes left Matt Moore hooked up with wideout Dwayne Jarrett for a 7 yard touchdown grab on a fade route to put Carolina up 17-13. The Panthers defense would hold the lead and bring the Panthers back to .500 on the season.

Moore said of the catch by Jarrett in the endzone "It was beautiful, the corner didn't have a chance of knocking that ball out, Dwayne has always had great hands, and he showed it on that play."

Panthers head to St. Louis for Halloween matchup

Turd Furgeson
Roar Senior Writer

St. Louis, MO - The Panthers (3-3) will head to St. Louis to take on the Rams (4-3) in the Edward Jones Dome this sunday.

Carolina will have to contend with superb rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, who is have a spectacular rookie campaign so far with 1,401 yards passing with 11 touchdowns to 4 picks. He has completed 59% of his passes and sports a 90.8 QB rating.

The Panthers hope to get to him early and often, as Bradford has been sacked 17 times already this year. Also, St. Louis will be without top wideout Donnie Avery for the game.

Carolina thinks they will be able to move the ball as well, the Rams are ranked 25th against the pass and run this year, which could cause them problems against the Panthers 3rd ranked ground game.

AT
Week Eight
27 - 16

St. Louis, MO - The Rams (4-4) had no answer for the Panthers (4-3) ground attack this week, and fell to Carolina 27-16 at home in week eight.

Carolina ran for 208 yards and managed 5 sacks to bring their record to 4-3. Jonathan Stewart gained 118 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown, and DeAngelo Williams had 90 yards on 16 attempts.

Panthers DE Charles Johnson sacked Rams qaurterback Sam Bradford three times on the day, while DT Tank Tyler and DE Everette Brown added one more each.

Johnson said after the game "I was just feeling it today. I missed a few game this year and felt it was just a matter of time before I busted out. I feel I could have games like this every week, maybe this gets me kick started"

For the Rams, Steven Jackson rushed for 148 yards on 19 carries, including a 79 yard run where he made the defense look like a pop warner squad. Also, WR Marty Gilyard hauled in 10 passes for 77 yards while filling in for injured wideout Donnie Avery.

On the injury front, the Panthers got bad news when the X-Ray on Brandon Lafell's ribs revealed two were indeed broken, he will miss the next two week recovering.

5-3 Saints come to town in division battle

Turd Furgeson
Roar Senior Writer

Charlotte, NC - Division rival New Orleans Saints (5-3) come to town this week, coming off a 38-27 loss to Pittsburgh that snapp a three game winning streak.

The Panthers (4-3) will attempt to sweep the season series and hopefully gain some ground on the first place Atlanta Falcons (5-2). The Panthers are hoping they can contain Drew Brees enough to stay in it in the fourth quarter.

Linebacker and defensive captain Jon Beason said "Brees is gonna put up his yards, we just have to stall his drives enough to let the offense do it's thing. It's not going to be easy, but I think we're up to it"

Carolina will be going for their third straight victory against a Saints team that is dead last against the run. If the Panthers can grind it out and keep the ball out of Drew Brees hands, they should be fine.
