Banged up Titans host Panthers in Week Two

Turd Furgeson
Roar Senior Writer

Nashville, TN- The Panthers (1-0) will visit a Titans (0-1) team on sunday missing it's two starting defensive tackles and it's starting center, as well as their second round pick out of Miami, DE Damarr Caro.

The Titans are coming off a 23-17 loss in Pittsburgh last week, in a game they out gained the Steelers by 100 yards on of offense. Star runningback Chris Johnson who only ran for 853 yards in 2010, for a 3.6 average on 234 carries, continued to struggle into 2011. Granted, it was Pittsburgh, but Johnson had 56 yards on 16 carries and his frustration is apparent.

"I can't put my finger on it, I just gotta keep at it, man" Johnson said "It'll come eventually, I just gotta stay positive and spend some extra time in the film room, I'll be good"

Carolina, the leagues top rushing team in 2010, started off 2011 with a bang. The Panthers got 145 from Jonathan Stewart and finished with 181 as a team. DeAngelo Williams had trouble finding running lanes on his opportunities last week, but looks to bounce back in a big way against Tennessee.

Nashville, TN - The Titans (0-2) got 165 yards from Chris Johnson and gained 455 yards of offense, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Panthers (2-0), who got another great performance in the return game.

Carolina outgained the Titans 258-58 in kick and punt return yardage, giving Carolina the huge advantage in field position. The Panthers DeAngelo Williams did the bulk of the work on offense, getting 130 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts. Jonathan Stewart came down to earth this week, gaining 66 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown.

Panthers rookie defensive tackle Ify Afo continues to push for more playing time by taking advantage of the snaps he's given. Afo had 2 tackles and a sack this week, and plenty of hurries.

The Titans lost S Chris Hope during the game, coaches indicate he could miss a couple of weeks.

After Bye, Panthers battle division foe Falcons in Atlanta

Turd Furgeson
Roar Senior Writer

Atlanta, GA- The Falcons (2-1) host the rival Panthers (2-0) in an early season test for the NFC South champion and runner-up of 2010.

Falcons running back Michael Turner, the NFL's leading rusher in 2010, is off to a hot start with 335 yards on 62 carries for a 5.4 average. Turner has three rushing scores this season for the fifth highest scoring team in the league through three games.

Atlanta has gotten a strong start from their 1st round pick, corner Chrishon Easley out of Wisconsin, he has two interceptions this year as the starting corner opposite veteran Dunta Robinson.

The Panthers are looking for a strong defensive performance after giving up 360 and 455 yards in their first two games. New defensive coordinator Ron Rivera saw some improvement in practice over the bye, and hopes it translates on gameday

"We haven't played to our potential yet, we're getting better though. The guys know they need to step it up out there, our play is unacceptable so far." Rivera said.

The Falcons will be without free agent acquistion and slot receiver Davone Bess this week, leaving second year wideout Kerry Meier out of Kansas as the third reciever.

The Panthers made a roster move during their week three bye, releasing CB C.J Wilson and signing corner Chevis Jackson to a 1 year deal. Jackson played for Atlanta in 2008 and 2009, but didn't sign on with a team for the 2010 season.

Re: A Carolina Panthers Dynasty: Blueprint for Greatness

AT
Week Four
10 - 24

Atlanta, GA - The Falcons (3-1) defense held the Panthers (2-1) to a measly 55 yards on the ground sunday and forced Panthers quarterback Matt Moore into two interceptions to come away with a 24-10 victory at home Sunday.

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were speechless after the game. They both averaged under 2.0 yards a carry and the longest run of the day was a Williams 10 yard scamper in the 1st qaurter. Williams said of the performance "We haven't played that poorly in a while. Me and Stew know it's on our shoulders to carry this team and we take that responsibility seriously. After a game like this, all we can do is work harder to come back and put this team on our shoulders and ride to some W's"

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was magnificent all day. Ryan completed 19 of 28 for 308 yards and 3 touchdowns. He didn't throw an interception and finished the day with a 140.1 QB rating. He had two pass plays of over 50 yards, hitting Tony Gonzalez on a 50 yard score and threading a ball to backup TE Anthony McCoy that went for 77 yards, setting up a 16 yard touchdown pass to Cadillac Williams, after a sack by Charles Johnson pushed the Falcons back.

Both teams after the game received unwelcome injury news. The Panthers will miss MLB Jon Beason for the next two weeks, after only playing 8 games in 2010. The Falcons lost top corner Dunta Robinson for three weeks top a broken thumb.

Jaguars arrive in Charlotte Jones-Drew-less

Charlotte, N.C - The Panthers (2-1) host the Jaguars (1-3) in Carolina's 2011 home opener.

Jacksonville has been without Maurice Jones-Drew so far this season after he dislocated a hip in preseason. The Jaguars fifth-round pick out of Morgan State, Theo Lawrence has gotten the bulk of the work with Jones-Drew sidelined. Lawrence has rushed 70 times for 250 yards a touchdown.

The Jaguars also lost starting DE Aaron Kampman in the preseason for the year, and his replacement Derrick Harvey is out this week. To say the least Jacksonville has been banged up a bit. It also doesn't help that quarterback David Garrard has struggled thus far, sporting a 63.2 QB rating and throwing six interceptions to five touchdowns.

The Panthers on the other hand are looking for their ground game to bounce back this week. They managed only 55 yards last week in Atlanta, and they know to win they're going to need the running game to perform at a high level.

Carolina will be without captain MLB Jon Beason for the next two games, leaving James Anderson, who played well last season as a starter to fill in and slide into the Mike spot.

Injury Report

MLB Jon Beason - Out two weeks - Torn Shoulder Labrum

Jaguars -
RB Maurice Jones-Drew - Out one week - Dislocated Hip
DE Derrick Harvey - out three weeks - Dislocated Hip
DT Terrance Knighton - Out five weeks - Herniated Disk

Week Five
16 - 13

Charlotte, N.C - Three turnovers cost the Panthers (2-2) a chance at winning this week against the Jaguars (2-3), falling 16-13 at home in week five.

Carolina got a rebound performance by the ground game, but Matt Moore threw an interception in the endzone and Jonathan Stewart fumbled inside the Jacksonville 20 to take away two scoring opportunities. The Panthers got 391 yards of offense, 179 on the ground, but stuggled to get the ball in the endzone all day.

Jaguars rookie running back Theo Lawrence had a good game filling in for the injured Maurice Jones-Drew. Lawrence rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries and Rashad Jennings added 41 yards on 7 attempts, doing a good job of picking up the slack for Jacksonville.

For Carolina, DeAngelo Williams had a great game gaining 118 yards on 17 attempts with a touchdown. Jonathan Stewart chipped in with 61 yard on 15 carries, but his fumble in the fourth quarter when the Panthers were driving for a score is all thats on his mind right now.

"I pride myself on holding onto the ball" Stewart said "No back likes fumbling, especially in that situation, when it's a close game and your team is in scoring position. I'm sick about it"
