GAME PREVIEW

Photobucket VS Photobucket

CHAPLE HILL, NC:
Virginia Tech is where most of its fans figured it would be at this point in the season: Leading the ACC, and ranked 3rd in the Media Poll, and 5th in the Coaches Poll. Carolina once again will face a top 5 ranked team (1-1), but this time it could be for the ACC title, and a possible BCS Bowl.

The Hokies offense (which is ranked #7 in the nation) is lead by, So QB Eugen Gonzalez who threw for 398 yds and 5 TDs in last weeks blow out of Clemson and the Hokies 6th straight win of the year. Sr RB John Dougherty is another weapon the Hokies have, getting close to 145 yds per game, with an outstanding 4.89 YPC.

The defense lead by So CB Charles Clay (5 int), and Jr DE Scott Hunt (4 Sack, 3 FF) is giving up 335 yds a game. The one key to the game is how well they can stop the Tarheel receivers.

North Carolina, comes into todays game with the #43 ranked offense lead by Freshman QB Richard Preston (12 TD/1 Int/149 Rating). Running game is still a concern put showed some promise last week with Fr Stanly Moore getting 106 yds. Also, the OL has got do a better job protecting the QB as they have allowed 12 sacks so far.

The Defense (#64 nationally) is giving up 362 yds a game. However, the tarheels are holding their opponents to 104 ypg (#33) behind the play of Jr DT Ryan Taylor (13 tkl, 5 sack,). The rest of the unit will have to help carry the load against a much more experenced VT squad.

HOKIES TOO MUCH FOR HEELS

38 - 10

Photobucket VS Photobucket

CHAPLE HILL, NC:
Carolina fans knew it might be a long day, after Virginia Tech's Loyd Holmes returned a 65 yd punt for a TD, to get the Hokies going. Neither team could get the ball moving in the 1st qtr. On Carolinas 1st series of the 2nd qtr, QB Richard Preston mishandled the snap, to set the Hokies up inside the 5 yd line. Tech wasted no time to go up 14 - 0 on the Heels. Carolina decided to bench Preston, and when with freshman QB Tim Donaldson, who took the heels down the field to cut the score to 14-7. Carolina once again gets the ball back, but was forced to punt, where Holmes broke into the open again to get his 2nd score of the day going 62 yds, to push it to 21 - 7. Things again when bad for the heels as they again fumbled the ball to set up a short field. VT's Dougherly had a couple of strong runs to set up a 3 yd score by Amos to put it 28-7. Carolina moved the ball using the clock, to set up a Sargent 30 yd FG as time expired in the first half.

The 2nd half was mostly defense, but Carolina's QB Donaldson was knocked from the game. Preston returned but had no better luck, as his first pass was picked off and set up another Hokie score. Another pick set up a FG as time ran out.

Overall, it was a hugh let down by the Heels, as the special teams really hurt our chances. It was decided to bench Preston, as he started the game 0-8 with 2 sacks. He just doesn't have the molibity to avoid the rush, as he has now been sacked 15 times. We will give Donaldson some playing time next week, as he has the talent to lead the team.

GAME PREVIEW

Photobucket VS Photobucket

GROVES STADIUM, Greensboro, NC:

Wake Forrest (0-5) is still looking for their first win of the season, but they might have to look ahead against an angery North Carolina team. The Deamon Deacons offense comes into todays game lead by Sr RB Brian Guzman (449 yds rush, 99 yds rec). Wake hopes that Sr QB Gerald Fleming can avoid the pass rush as he was sacked 5 times last week in a 24-6 lost to Boston College. The passing game will have to do much better as the Deacons could only manage 182 yds in the air. Wakes defense is lead my So OLB Curtis Bryant (48 tks, 3 sacks). The defensive unit (108 overall) must play better if they have any hope of stopping the Heels.

Carolina (4-2) must improve on their special teams play from a week ago, giving up 2 punts for TD's. This unit has continued to give up the big return it seems every game. The offense has continued to improve with the running of Fr RB Stanly Moore (378 yds, 3.78 YPC). The Heels will also take another look at FR QB Timothy Donaldson who last week passed for 192 yds and 1 TD in a lost to VT. Donaldson was injuried in the game but has been cleared to play this week. Carolinas Defense is hurting this week with the lost of SR CB Jason Dotson, as Fr CB James Turtle will move up from the Nickle back postion. The Heels are holding their opp to 112 yds rushing per game lead by Jr LB William Floyd (56 tks, 3 sacks) and LB Roy Dodge (46 tks, 2 sacks).

Re: Building of a Dynasty --North Carolina Tarheels

CAROLINA BACK ON TRACK

40 - 6

Photobucket VS Photobucket

GROVES STADIUM:

At first it didn't look to good for the Tarheels, as before game time, starting QB Timothy Donaldson came down with a kidney infection. Richard Preston came in and did an outstanding job passing for 356 yds and a score.

Wake wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first with a nice drive resulting in a 33 yd FG, to give the Deacons a 3-0 lead. That was about it for Wake as the Carolina defense did not allow Wake across midfield the rest of the Half. Carolina followed by scoring 13 unanswerd points in the half to go up 13 -6.

It was no better for the overmatched Deacons in the 2nd half as Carolina again drove the field to open the qtr, to push the lead to 20 -6. Carolina then gets a turnover and a short field, to go up 27 -3 to start the 4th. Wake did manage another FG to open the qtr, but Carolina was too much and scored each time they had the ball to make the final 40-6.

This was must likely the most complete game we have played. However, I am affaid to judge based on playing an overmatched team. Things get much tougher next week as we play another Top 25 team in Miami.

Re: Building of a Dynasty --North Carolina Tarheels

Sorry....forgot to post last weeks Top 25. Really no surprises other than LSU jumping form #11 to #4, mainly because 3 teams had open dates, and the others had very easy games against very weak opp.

Will get back on track this week...as I will have more time.
