Coach's Comments: We have a lot of starters on offense graduating. We will need to replace starters on the line, at both wide receiver positions, at quarterback and at halfback. Defensively, we are losing our team captain Pompey Festejo with no clear replacement at this point. This is a tough group to replace.

Position Changes

2010 Freshman All-American SS Duke Ihenacho
SS ---> MLB
73ovr --> 72ovr
Coach West: Ihenacho is a little undersized for the MLB spot, but he is a better tackler than he is in coverage. We had a real need at MLB and Ihenacho is the clear choice.

RT Andres Vargas
RT --> C
67 ovr --> 68ovr
Coach West: We have depth at RT so I needed somebody at Center. Vargas is the best choice. We think he can really succeed at that position.

Ha..I figured you wouldn't like that one. Look for updates tomorrow. Today I will get the depth chart and schedule done but I doubt if I will have time to play any games.

Re: The Career of Coach West (NCAA 11)

2011 San Jose State Depth Chart
Offense

QB
#6 Matt Faulkner SR (65ovr)
#5 Blake Jurich RS FR (57ovr)
#18 Dasmen Stewart RS SO (55ovr)

The Spartans need some consistent QB play this season. Faulkner played in three games last season and struggled, posting a 73.1 QB rating with only 2 touchdowns to go with 4 Interceptions. The Spartans are counting on him this season because they have no depth at this position.

HB
#15 Brandon Rutley SR (66ovr)
#20 Forrest Hightower RS FR (65ovr)
#27 Ben Thompson SO (60ovr)
#21 Micah Mason FR (53ovr)

Rutley played well last season when given the chance, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. This season he will spearhead the Spartan rushing attack. Playing behind him is Forrest Hightower, a speedy back that needs to work on securing the football. The Spartans have decent depth at this position.

FB
#42 Ina Liaina SR (64ovr)
#45 Matt McCoy RS JR (60ovr)

WR
#81
Kyle Nunn RS FR (67ovr)
#1 Josh Harrison RS SR (65ovr)

#80 Josh Sherman JR (64ovr)
#4 Michael Avila RS SR (62ovr)
#86 Andrew Reyes RS SR (60ovr)
#32 Noel Grigsby RS SO (56ovr)

Probably the deepest position the Spartans have this season. All of the receivers are viable options for QB M. Faulkner. Kyle Nunn sat out last season and that helped him tremendously. Nunn looks ready to be Faulkner's go-to-guy and is the fastest receiver on the team.

TE
#82 Ryan Otten JR (66ovr)
#85 Phil Woods FR (54ovr)

The Spartans lack depth at this position. Otten is a solid blocker and a good pass receiver but Woods is a true freshman and is known only for his blocking. Hopefully Otten stays healthy.

LT
#65 Fred Koloto RS SR (68ovr)
#76 David Quessenberry RS JR (59ovr)

LG
#71 Jake Peterson RS FR (61ovr)
#68 Cory Powell FR (53ovr)

C
#78 Andres Vargas RS SR (71ovr)
#60 Ben Zorn RS JR (62ovr)

RG
#61 Amar Pal RS SO (68ovr)
#62 Chuck Davis FR (53ovr)

RT
#72 Mike Harrell FR (63ovr)
#71 Jake Peterson RS FR (62ovr)
#75 Nick Kaspar FR (57ovr)

We have a young offensive line. We are starting two Freshmen and a Sophomore. We are going to be relying on Vargas and Koloto to provide leadership on the line. Running the football might be an issue because this line is suited to pass protect. Hopefully we can keep things balanced on offensive though.

Re: The Career of Coach West (NCAA 11)

2011 San Jose State Depth Chart
Defense

LE
#43 Travis Johnson JR (69ovr)
#53 Vincent Abbott RS JR (64ovr)

RE
#99 Brandon Williams FR (66ovr)
#55 Braden Storaasli RS JR (65ovr)

DT
#92 Pablo Garcia RS SR (67ovr)
#46 Ray Rodriguez RS JR (66ovr)

#97 Anthony Larceval RS SO (55ovr)
#90 Nick Finney RS SO (54ovr)
#77 Pierce Burton RS SO (50ovr)

We are really excited about this defensive line this season. Pablo Garcia had a great year last year and we expect big things from him this year. We should be able to get pressure on the QB but can we stop the run?

LOLB
#57 Charles Scicli RS JR (60ovr)
#52 Ricky Willis FR (50ovr)

MLB
#2 Duke Ihenacho SO (75ovr)
#58 Sean Jones FR (55ovr)
#44 Wade O'Neal RS JR (50ovr)

ROLB
#54 Jacob Romero JR (78ovr)
#13 Kyler O'Neal RS JR (52ovr)

We have a solid linebacker corps but we lack depth. Ihenacho made the move from SS to MLB over the offseason so we are curious to see what he can do there. Jacob Romero, the JC transfer, looks like a player that can have a real impact this season.

CB
#19 Peyton Thompson SR (70ovr)
#25 Ronnie Yell JR (65ovr)

#31 Chris Hill SO (64ovr)
#48 Jeff Hammond FR (55ovr)
#30 Ralph Johnson SR (54ovr)

FS
#17 Tanner Burns SR (78ovr)
#28 Brad Hayes FR (53ovr)

SS
#38 Manu Ngatikaura RS SR (72ovr)
#40 Dwayne Jones FR (51ovr)

The secondary looks pretty solid except that, once again, the Spartans lack depth. Ihenacho's move from SS to MLB gave Ngatikaura the starting role and we think he will play well. Overall, the defense looks very solid this season and will be the strength of our team...as long as nobody gets injured.
