Competition Breeds Champions The Pete Carroll Era

Seattle Seahawks in Review

In 2007 the Seattle Seahawks went 10-6 winning the NFC West, making the playoffs, and losing in the divisional round to the Packers. 2008 and 2009 saw the Hawks go a combined 9-23 earning them the #4 pick in the 2009 draft and the #6 and #14 picks in the 2010 draft. Last season the Seahawks were decimated by injuries and weren't able to produce on either side of the ball. They ranked 25th in the NFL in both scoring offense(17.5ppg) and defense(24.5ppg). With an injured Hasselbeck, a poor running game, an under performing wide receiver corps and an offensive line who didn't play together all year it was very hard to watch this offense every Sunday.

Perhaps the biggest story of the Seahawks this offseason was the controversial hiring of USC coach Pete Carroll who came to the Seahawks amidst NCAA investigations into the USC program. Carroll will become the new coach as well as the new executive vice president of the entire organization.

2010 Draft Recap

Round 1

LT Russell Okung

6'5'' 310 lbs 22 years old

Okung becomes Walter Jones' replacement on the left side of the offensive line. As a sound technician with outstanding feet and hands, he gives Matt Hasselbeck an exceptional blocker on the blind side. Although the Seahawks still have several voids to fill, they may have solved their biggest issue with the selection of Okung as their new left tackle.

SS Earl Thomas

5'10'' 208lbs 21 years old

The Seahawks add a talented playmaker to the back end of their defense with the selection of Earl Thomas. As an instinctive safety with exceptional range and awareness, Thomas will eliminate some of the big plays that plagued the defense a season ago. Additionally, his exceptional cover skills will allow the Seahawks to creatively use him in their nickel packages as a sub-defender in the slot. Given his multi-faceted skills, Thomas was a sensible pick for a Seahawks team in desperate need of playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Round 2

WR Golden Tate

5'10'' 202lbs 22 years old

The Seahawks find a talented playmaker for their receiving corps. Although Tate has been deemed too short to be a proto-typical No.1 receiver, his outstanding running skills make him a special talent worthy of a key role in Seattle's offense. In addition, he gives the Seahawks another player capable of producing points in the return game.

Round 4

CB Walter Thurmond

6'0''183lbs 23 years old

The Seahawks pick up a talented cover man in Walter Thurmond. The former Duck missed part of the season recovering from a knee injury, but could develop into a starting caliber corner when he returns to health. Pete Carroll's familiarity with Thurmond might have been the deciding factor in selecting the former Duck.

DE EJ Wilson

6'2'' 289lbs 22 years old

The Seahawks add a talented edge player with the selection of E.J. Wilson. The former North Carolina standout has good overall skills, and gives the Seahawks another pass rusher to develop in their rotation. Wilson didn't garner a lot of attention throughout his career, but scouts have been buzzing about his potential throughout the pre-draft process.

Round 5

FS Kam Chancellor

6'4'' 232lbs 22 years old

The Seahawks get a big, athletic safety in Kam Chancellor. The Virginia Tech standout is adept at playing in the box, and his combination of size and speed make him a strong candidate to emerge as a key contributor on special teams.

Round 6

TE Anthony McCoy

6'5'' 259lbs 22 years old

Pete Carroll selected his first USC Trojan in McCoy. He had a third-round grade from most NFL teams prior to off-field issues. The sixth round is excellent value for an athletic tight end, who can stretch the defense. Carroll needs to keep him in a structured environment to get the most out of him.

2010 Draft Grade

Despite former player Taylor Mays taking a personal shot at his former coach, Pete Carroll, the former USC coach had a great three-day draft. The Seahawks got a great playmaker in Texas safety Earl Thomas. OT Russell Okung was the top-rated tackle on the majority of teams' boards and was available because the Redskins prefer a zone-blocking scheme and wanted a more athletic tackle in Trent Williams. They spent the 40th pick on Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst. They needed a receiver and got Golden Tate, who had a great final season at Notre Dame with 93 catches for 1,496 yards and 15 touchdowns before going to play center field for the baseball team. They tried to trade for Marshawn Lynch, but ended up with ex-Trojan in LenDale White in a deal with the Titans. White gives them a power running back to go with Justin Forsett, considering how disappointing Julius Jones has been. But the best news was the acquisition of Leon Washington from the Jets, meaning that Jones might be an afterthought as a starter. Tate should be a return man. Carroll took a chance on his former player, Anthony McCoy, who tested positive for marijuana at the Combine. McCoy was hampered by an ankle injury last season. Grade: A+

2010 Season Preview

After the past 2 drafts and this offseason the Seahawks are loaded with young very talented players on both sides of the ball. Even the most homer of all Hawks fans will admit that this year, and possibly the next couple, will be transition years for the team. Although Seattle's top players Hasselbeck, Tatupu and Trufaunt are finally healthy, there just is not much around them on this team. That being said it will be interesting to see who will be worse in 2010 the defense or the offense? On paper the Seahawks look like a bare bones team and Madden has not given them any slack ranking them tied for second worst overall team in the league. Don't be surprised to see to see Pete Carroll picking in the top 10 once again, however the Seahawks have a few winnable games outside their pathetic division: Broncos (road), Bears (road), Raiders (road), Chiefs (home) and Buccaneers (road).

Season prediction: 5-11

Yeah no doubt about it! I was shocked at the results with the dominance of the Hawks! I am a life long hawks fan and was anticipating seeing a rebuilding year. It's still early but great start.

Seattle Seahawks 2010 Preseason: What To Watch For

Seattle, WA - In general, with the huge amount of turnover of this roster, the first thing that really jumps out with this team is whether they will be able to become a cohesive unit. Let's break down the offense, defense and special teams.

Offense - With a new coaching staff the offense will have to learn new schemes and an entire new playbook. The offensive line will have to stay healthy throughout the preseason to get as much work in as possible. Especially on the left side of the line where two new starters will be plugged in after perennial all world left tackle Walter Jones announced his retirement and last years starter at left guard Rob Sims went to Detroit. The offensive line will be key in keeping a 34 year old Matt Hasselbeck upright and healthy. If Hasselbeck can stay healthy this year the Seahawks have by far the best quarterback in the division and could be the difference between them fighting for the division and a top 10 pick in next years draft. The Seahawks running game last year was poor at best and with the addition of Leon Washington look for that to improve. Lastly the receiving corps is very young and very inexperienced, so they will need to get in as much work with Hasselbeck as possible to develop that chemistry and timing needed to make a run in the division.

Offensive Position Battles
VS
Leon Washington / Justin Forsett
Battle for the #1 running back spot.

The battle this preseason for the starting running back position will be a good one. The Seahawks coaching staff has given Leon Washington the nod to start the preseason but, don't be surprised if they give Justin Forsett the keys for the regular season. He played very well in a limited roll last year and needs to prove that he can handle a full work load. Many skeptics believe he is too small to make a big impact on a consistent basis in the NFL. Look for the loser of this battle to return kicks for the Hawks in 2010.

VS VS
Deion Branch / Mike Williams / Golden Tate
Battle for the #1 and #2 starting wide receiver spots.

This battle will probably be the most fun to watch on either side of the ball. As Coach Carroll continues to preach competition, that's exactly who will win this battle, whoever goes out and competes the hardest and puts up the best numbers. It is unclear who will win here and there are no real favorites but, there is the great story of Mike Williams making a return to football after being out for 2 years.

VS
Ben Hamilton / Chester Pitts
Battle for the #1 left guard spot.

Although it is not the flashiest battle it is a very important one. Both guys are new to the team but bring veteran leadership and knowledge of NFL defenses to the table. These guys will both play a key role in developing Russell Okung and Max Unger no matter who wins that starting job.

VS
Sean Locklear / Stacy Andrews
Battle for the #1 right tackle spot.

Sean Locklear has all the talent in the world but, since being drafted by the Hawks in 2004 he has been bounced around on the line due mainly to injuries and has not been able to play up to his potential. In somewhat of a surprise the Seahawks acquired Stacy Andrews just for depth originally but Coach Carroll will give him the chance to compete for a starting job.

Defense - For the most part the defense is still in tact from last year and they will just have to learn the complex defense that coach Pete Carroll will install. They will have to make up for the production they got out of arguably their best defensive player in 2009, cornerback Josh Wilson, who was traded to the Ravens. Two keys to the defense this year is if they will be able to get any pressure at all on opposing quarterbacks and if Kelly Jennings will be able to play up to his first round pick status as he has been a disappointment thus far in his career.

Defensive Position Battles

VS
Raheem Brock / Chris Clemons
Battle for the #1 left end spot.

This is the only real defensive battle as the rest of the defense has been set. This battle is a battle because the Seahawks have brought in 2 new guys and need to see what they have and both guys will push the other for the starting job. Both guys have had average careers and the Seahawks hope by giving one of these career backups full playing time they will burst on to the scene with a huge year.

Special Teams - The Seahawks have a couple of pro bowl potential players on their special teams in Jon Ryan and Olindo Mare. Both players had career years last year and will look to improve on their numbers. As stated before the player who is #2 on the depth chart at the running back spot will be returning kicks and Golden Tate will be given the punt return duties.
