Chargers Front Office Very Pleased With Draft Results
San Diego - The Chargers front office, coming off a disappointing 2010 season feel they made significant strides to rebuild the franchise through this years NFL Draft. The Chargers used their first pick of the first round, Fourth Overall, to tag Ohio States DE Cameron Heyward as the future of the Defensive Line. Heyward will start opposite Luis Castillo with the departure of Jacques Cesaire and bring a much needed pass rush to the Chargers Defensive Line, which has been severely lacking in that department the past few seasons.
With Quentin Jammer aging a possible move to Safety on the Horizon, the Chargers added Florida Gators Cornerback Janoris Jenkins with their second pick in the first round. Jenkins will most likely start as the Nickel back in his first year if he beats out incumbents Fred Bennett and Donald Strickland. Although the potential is there for stardom, Coach Shottenheimer is not yet ready to start him over Jammer or Antoine Cason who really broke out last season replacing former Pro Bowl Corner back Antonio Cromartie.
Moving to the Second Round, the Chargers continued to rebuild their defense selecting Line backer Kelvin Shepphard out of LSU. Shepphard, a Middle Lineback in San Diego's 3-4 base defense will look to add depth behind Starter Stephen Cooper. The Second Middle Linebacker will be a battle between Shepphard and last years draft pick Donald Butler from Washington who missed the entire season due to an injury suffered during last seasons training camp. Also in the mix is special teams demon and run stuffer, Brandon Siler who saw most of the action last year rotating with Kevin Burnett who has since left via Free Agency in the off season.
The Chargers addressed needs with the Offensive Line with their second pick of the second round selecting Mike Pouncey out of Florida. With this pick, the belief is that the team is down on current starter Nick Hardwick who's play has dropped off considerably ever since his injury. Pouncey is not expected to start but is considered to be the future of the franchise with Nick Hardwicks contract coming to an end soon. As of now, there is no word if Pouncey can or will be moved to another position on the Offensive Line.
Starting off the third round, the Chargers selected big time wide out Ronald "RoJo" Johnson out of the University of Southern California. When asked about the selection Johnson stated "I am very pleased to be joining the Chargers, but very mad at being in the 3rd round, you better believe I will make the rest of the league pay". Johnson is a big time player who will be looked to fill the shoes of Vincent Jackson (now in San Francisco). Joining Johnson out of USC is fullback/tailback Stanley Havili. Havili, picked in the fourth round is another playmaker who San Diego is very excited to have. Rumor has it FB Mike Tolbert will move to RB and provide more power to the game following up Ryan Mathews and Reggie Bush. With Tolbert on the move, Havili and Hester will battle out for the starting fullback job. Havili has the speed and hands to possibly line up in the slot or as an H-Back. He is dangerous no matter where he is on the field and will require serious attention from Defensive coordinators.
Another big time playmaker coming to the Chargers out of SDSU is WR Vincent Brown. Brown, no stranger to Qualcomm stadium is ecstatic about the opportunity. Brown's big time ability may have been overlooked since he was not from a big time university when you think of football talent, although San Diego State has produced many NFL players. Rounding out the Chargers draft class were LB's Keo Camat from Oregon State, JT Thomas from West Virginia, and Sam Acho from Texas. Acho, a DE in college will be a hybrid in the Chargers 3-4 defense rotating between down lineman and outside linebacker.
