Gonzaga: Return to the Gridiron (NCAA 11 Dynasty)

'Zags Return to D1 Football

Vince Grippi The Spokesman-Review
March 30th, 2010

Spokane - That's right Zag fans, today AD Mike Roth dropped the bomb that no one expected. Gonzaga University will once again field a Division I football program.

The Bulldogs last fielded a team in 1941. The school attempted to restart the program in 1946 but failed to do so and the stadium was razed.

Roth sited the success of the basketball team as a major incentive to re-launch the program. That coupled with the recent shake-up of the WAC led to an oppurtunity for Gonzaga football to return to the highest level.

In order to facilitate a football team the University has announced plans to expand the 6000 seat McCarthy Center by 10,000 seats. Money to help pay for this expansion comes from the Ray Flaherty Foundation. Flaherty was one of two NFL HoF'ers to hail from Gonzaga. This will result in the Center being renamed to the McCarthy-Flaherty Dome. However this reporter is sure fans will still refer to it as "The Kennel".

Roth also states that they are close to inking a deal with a reputable DI FCS coach and will unveil the schools uniforms at the press event for the hiring,

NOTE: THIS DYNASTY IS NOW A TULANE DYNASTY. WE WILL CONTINUE TO TRACK THE BULLDOGS AS TIME PASSES.

Looking foward to this. I live in Spokane... If you have trouble expanding the Kennell, you could always play your games at Joe Albi Stadium.

I am curious with your move to the WAC are you going to move BSU up to the MWC. If you are looking to make some conference realignments feel free to take a look at my Las Vegas Vipers thread. I made changes to every conference including putting Eastern Washington in the WAC because I wanted a another westcost team, you could do something similar but use Gonzaga instead.

Re: Gonzaga: Return to the Gridiron (NCAA 11 Dynasty)

May 23rd, 2010

Coachmen: "I'm Johnathan Coachmen and this is Reece Davis. We are bringing you breaking news out of Spokane right now. It seems that the Gonzaa Bulldogs are holding a press conference to annoounce their new head football coach. Reece any thoughts?"

Davis: "Well Coach it's very up in the air right now. The Spokesman reported that AD Mike Roth was in contact with a reputable FCS Head Coach. Rumors circulating that the top canidates for the job are Mickey Mathews from James Madison. A two time Robinson Award Winner and interestingly enough Robin Pflugrad, the newly named head coach of the Montana Grizzlies. Which would be a devasting blow to the Griz."

Coach: "Reece let me interupt you right there as we take you to Spokane where AD Mike Roth is at the mic ready to speak."

Mike Roth: "Hello everyone, I'm sure there are plenty of questions before we make the announcements regargding our new head coach and unveil the teams uniforms. First Question?"

Reporter 1: "Why now Mike? Its been a long time since Gonzaga has fielded a team, and FBS wouldn't DII or FCS be a better suit for you guys?"

Roth: "Very good questions, both answers tie in together honestly. First football is a sport that helps to instill pride in school, not that we lack it but you can see the difference in Basketball only schools versus schools with prominent teams in both. Second with the Conference changes announced for the 2010 and San Jose State announcing that it would be competing in the FCS this coming year we were contacted by the WAC about our interest in fielding a team in the new WAC. Great incentive for both sides. Yes?"

Reporter 2: "Mr. Roth, funding a team is very expensive at the FBS level. Gonzaga hasn't had a team since the 1940's. With no basis for a team until now, how do you expect to compete and what about the financial impact?"

Roth: "Without getting into too much of the economics. The funding will come from several sources, most notablly being the Basketball program. That being said we have a goal for the football program to be self sustaining by 2020. As for competivness, that will be up to our coach to take care of. With that I give you the new head coach of the Gonzaga University Football Bulldogs, Ty Gregorak."

(grumbling and mumbling amongst the reporters)

Re: Gonzaga: Return to the Gridiron (NCAA 11 Dynasty)

Ty Gregorak

Age: 31
Hometown: Spokane, Washington
Coaching Expeience:
University of Washington (Grad Assistant 2001, 2002)
Montana University (LB/DB 2003-2009)
UNLV (LB Coach 2009)
Central Washington (TE Coach 2009)

Offense Style: Miami
Defensive Style: 4-2-5
Recruiting: Best Possible players available. Initially within the state of Washington only.
Game Setup:
15 Minute Quarters
Heisman Difficulty
A-A Recruit Difficulty
Combo of Multiple slider sets from OS for Realism.

ESPN.COM Analysis:
"Gregorak is a very interesting hire. After holding 3 posts this year due to the move to UNLV then his subsequent release after a night club incident in Colorado. Gonzaga hired him away from CWU before he got involved with the team. It's reported that Gonzaga had to pay a hefty fee to CWU for his services. He's young, lot's of passion and has great coaching lineage from Montana. He'll get a chance to coach against Hauk which should be interesting. Rumor has it that Gonzaga is gearing up a push to join the PAC 10 in Basketball, and having a football program may help acheive that goal.

It will be very interesting to see how Gonzaga does with a team of 70 walk-ons. Will Gregorak be able to make a mark?"

Confirmed Conference Moves:

San Jose State -> FCS
Gonzaga -> WAC
Washington St -> WAC (Need a rival)
UTEP - WAC
SD State - WAC
Wyoming - WAC
Boise St -> MWC
Nevada -> MWC
Fresno -> MWC
Colorado -> Pac 10
Utah -> Pac 10
BYU -> Indy
Indiana - CUSA
Louisana Tech -> CUSA
USF -> CUSA
Notre Dame -> Big East
Iowa St -> MWC
Nebraska -> Big 10
Arizona St -> Big 12
Arkansas -> Big 12
SMU -> Big 12
Tulane -> SEC

Todd McShay: "The 2010 Conference moves are expansive. The biggest move I see is Notre Dame joining the Big East, a move some said would never happen. In the interesting moves the we've seen Tulane to the SEC is the shocker to some. However we only have to look at Tulanes history to see that they were a competitor in the SEC in it's early days. The reason that Tulane would replace Arkansas (who joins the Big 12) was speculated that the SEC wants the Superdome in the conference. We'll see if the bump in conference prestige helps Tulane build. The other shocking move we saw was SMU moving to the Big 12 after Iowa St left for the MWC. With so many teams out there like Houston and TCU it was very odd to see SMU get the invite. Big 12 President of Operations noted that the schools voted on the invite and it was unanimous, it seems that Texas and Oklahoma want to see SMU returned to its former glory."

The Bulldogs have released the Depth Chart for 2010. Offensive Coordinator Dan Werner is optimistic about his team this season.

"This has been a very trying experience for the staff. Coach Gregorak has everyone very excited about the new Gonzaga program. Limited summer recruiting helped us bring in a few guys, we we're lucky however to find so many former high school players on campus. An Unofficial club team helped keep several guys in football shape." ~ Werner

ESPN.COM Analysis: "The Bulldogs have a very weak team in terms of overall skill. The personnel thats in place on the D is gonna have to work really hard in the 4-2-5 "

'Bama Decimates Gonzaga Offense
Bulldogs Defensive Play Surprises Coaching Staff
Tuscaloosa - The 'Zags couldn't have had a more difficult opponent than the Crimson Tide to begin their return to D1 College Football. The final score is pretty much what was expected. The score however doesn't tell the whole story.

The Zags seemed to be off to a good start in the first quarter with a 7 yard carry and 13 yard completion on their first two plays from scrimmage. It didn't take long for the Crimson Tide D to assert itself. On the third play of the game Bulldogs starting QB Steven Farris (Jr.) received an earth shattering hit that ended his season. In a surprise decision Coach Gregorak and his OC Dan Werner made the call to jerk the redshirt of freshman QB Jeff Noble.

The Bulldog's Offense was hammered for the entire 28 minutes they controlled the ball. The rushing game couldn't get going, for every 6 yard carry Bama would penalize the 'Zags with a sack or hit the RB for a loss. Gonzaga's one bright point on offense came in the 3rd quarter when Noble put together a 9 play drive that resulted in the Bulldogs lone offensive TD. The offense would suffer 6 interception, 3 fumbles (1 lost) and 8 total sacks.

The real surprise came from Bulldog Defense, who for 2 and half quarters played Alabama better than anyone could have imagined. Coach Saban said after the game"We just could not figure out that 4-2-5, with no real tape on them we had to learn as we went." Coming out of the half Bama led 14-0. The stat table however showed a different story. Mark Ingram was held to 53 yards and the passing game was limited to 113 of which 54 of those yards were from 2 McElroy TD throws.

The Bulldog defense carried the momentum into the 2nd half scoring on a 57 yard fumble return. The Bulldog secondary looked stellar holding the Tide to 210 yards and picking McElroy 3 times. The defense however could not pull of this upset alone and watched in dismay as the 'Zags offense allowed 21 points off Int returns.

The defense also began to wear down as Mark Ingram gathered steam in the 3rd quarter with a 49 yard TD run and went on to receive player of the game honors."
