HAWKS FALL SHORT IN OPENER
Toronto - The Toronto Hawks hosted the Miami Dolphins for their first ever game. Toronto Municipal Stadium was packed with fans eager to see the first ever game played by a Canadian NFL team. Expectations are mild for the team with most experts predicting they will win less than 5 games. The thin roster has not kept fans away, the first half of the home schedule has already sold out and with yesterday's strong performance the remainder of the season will likely be sold out in short order.
Chester Dawson played a solid game under center, going 15 for 25 with 227 yards and a score to Danny Hart. Hart looked like he will become a solid target for Dawson as he and tight end Martin Danielson were receipients of 5 passes each. Hart was expected to go late in the draft but NFL scouts were concerned that his 5-9 170 pound frame could not survive the rigors of an NFL season. Hart, who excelled at Hofstra, has drawn comparisons to fellow Hofstra alumn Wayne Chrebet and has been called "a poor man's Wes Welker." Hart lacks astonishing straight line speed but is quite shifty and his small stature makes him difficult to hit cleanly.
The Phins took a 21-9 lead into halftime with scores coming from a pair of Ricky Williams runs and a Henne to Bess 9 yard TD. Kris Brown hit 3 field goals in the first half and added another in the 3rd quarter. His 4/4 and 2 point after performance likely made him a fantasy favorite.
The Dolphins were able to run the ball with relative ease, amassing 200 yards on the ground to the Hawks 86. Toronto ran only 45 offensive plays (25 passes, 20 rushes) though Tye Hill's interception return TD gave the offense one less possession. Miami ran 50 plays (20 passes, 30 rushes) which is slightly below the NFL average. The interception and 2 long scoring plays kept their numbers down.
After an 80 yard Henne to Hartline TD pass early in the 3rd quarter Henne was knocked out of the game with a partial roin tear. With Pennington already out for the season with a fractured elbow the team turned to Tyler Thigpen. Thigpen threw the pick to Hill for the Hawks first ever TD and made the score 28-19. After stopping Miami the Hawks put together a solid drive capped by a Dawson to Hart 15 yard TD pass to pull within 2 points. The defense could not hold off the Miami rushing attack and they scored late in the 4th on a 1 yard Polite run to put the game out of reach at 35-26.
The Hawks travel to Green Bay next week to face the 0-1 Packers who fell to the Eagles 31-14 in Philadelphia. The Packers will bring in a battered offensive line with starting center Scott Wells and the teams top two reserves out. Third receiver James Jones is also out. Toronto will be without third string QB Gillum and MLB Potts. The Hawks picked up free agent MLB Brendon Ayanbadejo to fill the spot and add depth.
