Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 11)
New Mexico @ #4 Oregon Autzen Stadium Eugene, OR August 28, 2010 Ducks off and flying in 2010 Oregon shows no rust, explodes out of the gates against UNM EUGENE, OR - Jeremiah who? Okay, it's only one game, and it was against a woefully outmatched opponent, but nevertheless, Darron Thomas took the first step towards helping Oregon fans forget Jeremiah Masoli, leading the Ducks to a 77-7 laugher in the 2010 opener against New Mexico. The sophomore Texan took the reigns for the first time as UO's starting quarterback and passed with flying colors. Aside from two interceptions, he was flawless, completing 63% of his passes for 227 yards and a touchdown, and he showed off his legs as well, running for 138 yards and 4 scores on only nine carries. LaMichael James, Kenjon Barner and Remene Alston excelled carrying the ball too, accumulating 149, 89, and 68 yards, respectively. "Darron had a great game," Ducks coach Chip Kelly said. "He missed one or two in the passing game, and he actually carried the ball more than we would've liked, but it was a good opener." On defense, the Ducks didn't give up any points and held the Lobos under 300 yards, including only 45 yards rushing (factoring in 3 sacks). Defensive tackle Brandon Bair led the effort with 8 tackles and a pair of sacks. One area Chip Kelly expressed a desire to improve in was forcing turnovers. "That's what I want our defense to excel at, taking the ball away," Kelly said. "We did a good job forcing pressure which led to (Eddie) Pleasant's interception, but I thought we could've done a better job getting after the ball, both in the air and on the ground. You never want to sacrifice things like tackling and proper assignment football for the sake of trying to force turnovers, but I think we can definitely up the ante in that aspect." Next week the Ducks face a potential trap game in Knoxville against Tennessee. The Volunteers are not a strong football team, but it's always a wildcard when a west coast team travels east of the Mississippi.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 11)
#5 Oregon @ Tennessee Neyland Stadium Knoxville, TN September 4, 2010 Ducks fight off the rain in Rocky Top Second half explosion delivers a knockout in Knoxville KNOXVILLE, TN - On Oregon's first play from scrimmage, Darron Thomas pulled the ball as three separate Tennessee defenders crashed down on poor LaMichael James. 42 yards later, Thomas crossed the goalline untouched, and it seemed like the beginning of a very long day for Tennessee. But the Ducks, surprisingly, were off kilter because of the monsoon that was swamping the field. The defense was tenative, and the Vols capitalized. Thomas another pick six, and lost two fumbles that Tennessee returned for huge yardage inside the 5. One was punched in, and the Ducks forced a turnover off the other. The end result was a 21-15 deficit that had many scratching their heads. But the Ducks exploded out of the locker room after halftime, pouring in 28 3rd quarter points, routing the Volunteers 35-15 in the second half and ultimately winning the day in Knoxville, 50-36. Aside from the three turnovers, Thomas was deadly efficient, completing an astonishing 27 of 30 passes for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns, adding 82 on the ground. LaMichael James had another big game as well, running for 177 yards on only 22 carries (8 YPC). The Oregon receivers also had big days. Tight end David Paulson had his second straight 100 yard game, going for 114 on 6 catches. Freshman Josh Huff had a breakout performance, catching 6 passes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jeff Maehl added 8 grabs for 97 yards. As is usually the case with the Ducks, the opposition dominated time of possession (24:03 to 15:57), and the Ducks' defense racked up lots of tackles as a result. Brandon Bair and Casey Matthews had 10 apiece, John Boyett had 8, Josh Kaddu and Spencer Paysinger each had 7, and Terrell Turner and Eddie Pleasant each notching 6, with Turner adding 3 sacks.
