Re: Building A Dynasty: The Los Angeles Vipers (Madden 11)
Los Angeles Strengthens Secondary
Vipers sign two veterans in hopes to kick start secondary Los Angeles, CA - After two preseason games, the Los Angeles Vipers have given up a total of 609 passing yards five touchdown passes. This lack of a secondary has sent Los Angeles on a hunt for quality players to help with the defense. Vipers' general manager Dr. Jan Itor announced after Saturday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts that the team was close to signing two players to strengthen this team. Early Tuesday morning, Itor announced the signing of veteran free safety Ken Hamlin. Hamlin, a 7-year man out of Arkansas, adds a hard hitting player and a wealth of experience to this young Los Angeles team. After joining the Seattle Seahawks via the draft, Hamlin became a top defender gaining 237 tackles and eight interceptions in his four year stint. Hamlin's best season came in 2007 with the Dallas Cowboys. That season, he racked up 45 tackles, 15 passes defended and 5 interceptions. After two more average seasons, the Cowboys released Hamlin to the free agency. Hamlin signed a three year, $10.02M deal with Los Angeles and looks to make an immediate impact on this team's defense. After the announcement of the Hamlin signing, Dr. Itor announced the signing of corner back Ken Lucas to a three year, $14.76M deal. Lucas was also drafted by the Seattle Seahawks, in 2001, and has been a quality player in his nine years in the NFL. Lucas has grabbed 25 interceptions throughout his career and made 458 tackles. He too is looking to be a big impact player both on and off the field, according to Vipers' head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "We picked up some great football players," stated Mendenhall. "Not only will they both produce results on the defensive side of the ball, but will help out the younger guys to get a grip on things. Hopefully this will all work out and we will be able to cut down on allowing so many passing yards each game. Both Lucas and Hamlin will be implemented into our defense right away and you can bet your lucky stars that they'll be ready for Cincinnati." In order to make room for Hamlin and Lucas, the Vipers have released fourth string halfback Dewayne McClain, tight end Mark Biden and defensive tackle Jayson Lowe. After not seeing much playing time in their first two games, McClain, Biden and Lowe were not essential to this team's progress and were optioned to free agency. A new look to Los Angeles' secondary may just be what this team needed to fix some of their problems. Currently ranked 31st in the league in pass defense, both Hamlin and Lucas will be sure to add a spark to this team and help lock down this aspect of the defense. Next week the Vipers host the Cincinnati Bengals and will have their work cut out for them when Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco and Antonio Bryant come to town. |

Re: Building A Dynasty: The Los Angeles Vipers (Madden 11)
Whitehurst's Struggles Not His Fault
Coach Mendenhall backs quarterback's rough start Los Angeles, CA - Los Angeles Vipers' head coach Bronco Mendenhall does not blame their starting quarterback Charlie Whitehurst for his sub-par numbers after two preseason games. Mendenhall states that the reason Whitehurst does not have decent numbers is due to play calling favoring the run in the time Whitehurst is on the field. "We like to jump out of the gate running the ball," stated Mendenhall. "Establishing our ground game is very important to our way of running the our offense and we haven't giving Charlie the chance to show us what he can do. We as coaches need to start calling more pass plays to let him contribute to the offense like we know he can." After two preseason games, Whitehurst has only completed 14 of 26 pass attempts for 100 yards and no touchdowns. Without much to work on, coach Mendenhall has a plan to get Whitehurst more action on the field. "We're going to have Sheldon [Diamond] start for us against Cincinnati and let Whitehurst play the second half," stated Mendenhall. "That will give Charlie the chance to be a big part of our offensive scheme. Diamond has done great for us so far and starting him with the first string offense will benefit both himself and Whitehurst. There is still time for both quarterbacks to show their case to us for who should start opening day. Hopefully, this will work out for the best." Sheldon Diamond has played well against Washington and Indianapolis completing 16 of 32 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Diamond has also only been sacked one time in four quarters of play; Whitehurst has been sacked three times. With Diamond taking the slight lead in the quarterback battle, Whitehurst must use this opportunity to his advantage and make some plays. Nothing is certain as of yet, but the Los Angeles coaching staff has much to think about in the coming weeks. Both quarterbacks are capable of leading this young Viper offense on the field, but it's their play in the preseason that will define who the starter will be. |

News from the NFL 2010 Preseason Week 2 Detroit Strengthens Line, Adds Two Guards The Detroit Lions added some beef to their offense line after a 27-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in week two of the preseason. Lions general Martin Mayhew announced early this week that they have come to terms with left guard Arron Sears and right guard Mike Goff. The two players add depth to a line that has been struggling in the preseason so far. In two losses, the Lions have averaged a mere 56.3 yards per game on the ground and with the addition of Goff and Sears, they are looking to improve on that number. Head coach Jim Schwartz is excited to have the two added to the line and ready for their play this week against the Cleveland Browns. "We have a good rotation now," stated Schwartz. "Fatigue was a big problem in the first two games for our line and now that we have some backup, we can be switching up lineups and have a more effective line. We have to get a good ground game going and hopefully with the addition of Sears and Goff, we can do that." The 0-2 Lions host the 1-0-1 Cleveland Browns this Saturday, Setpember 4 at 6:30 PM EST. Looking for their first win of the preseason, the Lions join seven other teams in that same quest. Others include, the Los Angeles Vipers, the Miami Dolphins, the Green Bay Packers, the Oakland Raiders, the San Diego Chargers, the Tennessee Titans, and the St. Louis Rams. Ricky Williams Down in Miami Miami Dolphins' halfback Ricky Williams went down in Saturday's 30-24 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and missed the remainder of the game. After a check in with team doctors, Williams was diagnosed with a torn groin muscle and is expected to sit out the rest of the season. Ronnie Brown will now be the primary back with Williams missing the regular season. Brown and Williams shared time in their first two games providing the Dolphins with a two headed monster that tore apart defenses. Williams will be missed in Miami, but Brown will be able to pick up the slack. 2010 Preseason Week 2 Scores Indianapolis Colts 24 - Los Angeles Vipers 17 New England Patriots 24 - Atlanta Falcons 14 Philadelphia Eagles 14 - Cincinnati Bengals 25 Baltimore Ravens 37 - Washington Redskins 20 Pittsburgh Steelers 13 - New York Giants 31 Kansas City Chiefs 13 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12 Miami Dolphins 24 - Jacksonville Jaguars 30 St. Louis Rams 17 - Cleveland Browns 17 New York Jets 23 - Carolina Panthers 28 Houston Texans 17 - New Orleans Saints 13 Oakland Raiders 10 - Chicago Bears 17 Detroit Lions 10 - Denver Broncos 27 Dallas Cowboys 23 - San Diego Chargers 9 Green Bay Packers 35 - Seattle Seahawks 37 Minnesota Vikings 17 - San Francisco 49ers 24 Arizona Cardinals 16 - Tennessee Titans 6 |

Re: Building A Dynasty: The Los Angeles Vipers (Madden 11)
2010 Preseason Week 3 Preview Cincinnati Bengals @ Los Angeles Vipers Saturday, September 4, 2010 Verizon Wireless Stadium Los Angeles, CA - The third straight week, the Los Angeles Vipers will face a solid quarterback and quality receivers in the form of the Cincinnati Bengals. Coming off a surprising 17-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Vipers are feeling confident that they can hang with the "big boys" this season. Vipers head coach Bronco Mendenhall feels confident about this weeks match-up with the Bengals. "We had a solid game last week against Indy," stated Mendenhall. "Now if we can just carry that intensity over to this week, we should see some big results. Our secondary is stronger and we have had more time to practice as a team, so I'm excited to see how this one plays out. Cincinnati is a good, solid football team, but we are as well. This is our game to win or lose, it's up to us." As coach stated, the Vipers feature two more guys in the secondary that will look to help contain the passing game. Ken Lucas and Ken Hamlin will get the start this week at corner back and safety, respectively. Both Hamlin and Lucas add a whole new dynamic to this young Los Angeles defense and will be keeping their eyes on Chad Ochocinco the majority of the game. "Chad can make plays, plain and simple," stated Lucas. "We have to make sure to shut him down and limit big plays. Two weeks ago this team shut down one of the greatest receivers in Terrell Owens and the same can be done with Ochocinco. We just have to keep our blocks and stick to our coverage patterns. If we do that, we'll be good." Cincinnati's rushing game has not been the best two weeks into the season, with their leading rusher gaining only 57 yards on 29 attempts. Kevin Jones has been leading the Bengals ground game, but a shaky offense line is to blame with the halfback's poor start. The line has also given up five sacks on the year, tied for fourth worst in the league. Vipers' defensive line must put pressure on quarterback Carson Palmer in order to disrupt the passing game, their biggest issue. Larod Stephens-Howling is looking to keep up his stellar play and help jump start this offense. Stephens-Howling has 87 yards on 20 carries, 70 yards on three receptions, and 190 yards on six kick returns. He is certainly the surprise of the preseason for this Viper team and his contributions make up for Los Angeles' shaky quarterback situation. Coach Mendenhall is giving the start to Sheldon Diamond in hopes of giving him more time with the first string offense and quarterback Charlie Whitehurst more opportunities to make plays in the second half. Los Angeles' quarterback have been less than stellar with an average quarterback rating of 61.8 with a combined two touchdowns, one interceptions and 322 yards. The Bengals have a tough defense, so the Vipers' quarterbacks have their work cut out for them. Saturday's game is scheduled for 6:30 PM EST at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Admission to the game is once again free under orders of team general manager Dr. Jan Itor. Right guard Greg Francis, who broke some ribs in the preseason opener against the Washington Redskins, is doubtful for Saturday's game, but should be back in the line-up next week against the Detroit Lions. |

Re: Building A Dynasty: The Los Angeles Vipers (Madden 11)
Los Angeles Runs Over Cincinnati
Scott rushes for 113 yards in LAs first win Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Vipers earned their first victory of the preseason, and first win as a franchise, Saturday night in a 24-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. From the first offense play, the Vipers ran over the Bengals and never looked back, racking up 181 yards on the ground. Lerod Stephens-Howling kicked things off on the first play of Los Angeles first drive with a 59 yard touchdown run for the early 7-0 lead. "We hit the ground running today and it feels great to get that first win under our belt," stated Stephens-Howling. "We saw the blitz coming and switched the play to an outside pitch. I got some great blocks and was able to take it to the house. Today proved we can play and we're all looking forward to the regular season." Stephens-Howling saw limited time after his big touchdown run finishing the day with 64 yards on three attempts. However, Bernard Scott stole the show, rushing for 113 yards on 19 attepmts and helped the Vipers kill the clock in the games final minutes. Although he didn't find the endzone, Scott contributed in many other ways. Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer left the game at the end of the first quarter after being hit by Los Angeles defensive end, Jeremy Jarmon. Palmer, although suffering a minor shoulder bruise, sat out the rest of the game and J.T. O'Sullivan took over. O'Sullivan led the Bengals on two scoring drives to end the first quarter and take a 10-7 lead over the Vipers. Midway through the second quarter, newly signed Ken Lucas made his presence known with a 91 yard interception return to retake a 14-10 lead. Lucas finished the day with only two tackles, but the interception had coaches singing his praises. "Ken had a great game today," stated head coach Bronco Mendenhall. "He had the tough job of covering Chad [Ochocinco] all game and did a great job. I think he was held to like one reception in the first half. Well whatever the case may be, we're happy Ken is a Viper and we can expect more play from him at this caliber. We got the win! This is the time to celebrate, but not for long. We still have a lot of work to do before the regular season, but this is a nice feeling." Los Angeles' defense had a great game aside from allowing 253 passing yards, the lowest amount all preseason. The Vipers' defense allowed only 77 rushing yards and sacked the quarterback five times. Viper linebacker Donald Butler, who leads the team in tackles, continued his strong play with seven tackles and one pass defended. If this team can learn to contain the passing game, this could be one scary defense. Charlie Whitehurst finally decided to show up as he completed 10 of 12 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown to wide receiver Ron Washburn. Mendenhall's strategy of playing Whitehurst in the second half payed off as the young quarterback had his best performance to date. The only question remains is if he can continue this level of play. The Vipers are currently 1-2 and are beginning to look like a football team. After pulling out the 24-17 win over the Bengals, the Vipers must now head to Detroit to face the 1-2 Lions. Another winnable game could have Los Angeles heading into the regular season with a two game win streak.

Note: Sorry about that last post, the HTML was freaking out, but I think it's fixed now. I am behind in The Viper Report so I'm going to try to get that tonight or tomorrow. I'm stoked on the first win. It was a great game. If anyone has comments/questions/suggestions, all are welcome. Thanks for reading if you are.

Re: Building A Dynasty: The Los Angeles Vipers (Madden 11)
The Viper Report August '10 - Volume 1, Issue 2 Mendenhall Expects Big Things in 2010 Los Angeles Vipers' head coach Bronco Mendenhall sees his football team doing well in the 2010 season. Dispite the 0-2 start, Mendenhall thinks the players and coaches are ready and able to do big things come the regular season. Since this is the team's first season in the NFL, most experts around the league are questioning the Vipers credibility and future success. "This team is made up of young, inexperienced players," stated ESPN analyst Merril Hoge. "I can only see this team winning 1-2 games this year. They need a lot of help on both sides of the ball. Ken Hamlin and Ken Lucas were good additions, but they will not solve all of this team's problems. Best of luck to them, I sure do know they need it." Mendenhall thinks otherwise. His attitude towards his team is fresh and optimistic. "I think we have a great group of guys here," stated Mendenhall. "Sure we don't have any Peyton Mannings or Rey Lewises, but the team we do have shows their determination day in and day out and you can't ask for anything else. We have a long road ahead of us, but it's not impossible. I'm really looking forward to the season and how we do as a team." Francis Out 2-3 Weeks Vipers right guard Greg Francis suffered three broken ribs in their 30-10 loss to the Washington Redskins in week one of the preseason. Francis is expected to miss 2-3 weeks due to the injury. Los Angeles' line is not the strongest point of the team offense and losing Francis leaves a big hole to fill. "It always stinks when you can't be on the field with your team," stated Francis. "I don't want to risk getting more hurt then and miss time in the regular season. Luckily we have time before week one and I should be ready to go. For now all I can do is get familar with the offense and be there for the team on gamedays. The sooner I can get back the better." Player Spotlight WR Sammie Stroughter Sammie Stroughter was the Los Angeles Vipers 11th pick in the 2010 expansion draft after spending one short season in Tampa Bay. Stroughter had a shaky first year with the highlight being a 97 yard kickoff return against the Carolina Panthers and the lowlight being a season ending broken foot. Sammie is healthier than ever and ready to take on any role the Vipers throw at him. After two preseason games, Stroughter has seen time at wide receiver and kick/punt returner. 2010 Preseason Stats: 3 receptions // 18 yards // 0 touchdowns // 7 returns // 99 yards // 0 touchdowns |
