Re: The Coaching Legacy of Doug Nussmeier (NCAA 11)

Despite Rough Start, Cougs Add Another

It has been a really rough start for Coach Nussmeier and the Washington State Cougars and they lost their second straight game this past week. However, even with the tough loss to the #21 USC Trojans, the Cougars had 4 recruits on campus visiting and after the game, they received word from one of them that he was choosing Washington State as his place to play at the college level. Here's a little more on this recruit (Now you can really see the crappy TV I'm using now that I'm back home on winter break, rather than at my home with my nice tv):

Discussion: Although Ferguson is pretty far down on the offensive tackle recruit list for the country, he is a kid in the back yard of the Cougars and he has good size. He has amazing awareness and decent strength for a lineman, and he has the ability to get out and run, when blocking for the running back. With starting right tackle, Micah Hannam, graduating after the year, the Cougs will be down an offensive tackle and Ferguson will most likely come in and be a back up right away. He will also come in and instantly be the biggest offensive tackle on the team.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Doug Nussmeier (NCAA 11)

Top 25 Games
#5 TCU @ Colorado State

Even with Andy Dalton being out the past few weeks, the Horned Frogs have shown that they have more than enough weapons to lead to the team to victory. There is no way that the Colorado State Rams will step up and put up a fight against TCU.

Lee's pick: TCU
Kirk's pick: TCU

#20 Florida State @ #25 Virginia

Virginia looks to be a very scary team for Florida State to face this week as they are #7 in scoring points per game and also #14 in total defense. Not only that, but the Cavaliers are also the #1 team in the nation at causing turnovers vs the amount of turnovers they give up. With that being said Christian Ponder is still one of the country's best passers and he can still lead his team to victory against the best teams out there. This could be a really good game.

Lee's pick: Florida State
Kirk's pick: Virginia

FIU @ #22 Pittsburgh

FIU is absolutely one of the worst teams in the country as they have struggled to put up 5 points per game. It will be hard for them to put up any points against the Panthers of Pittsburgh, and with Dion Lewis putting up 4.9 yards per carry it will be an easy victory for Pitt.

Lee's pick: Pittsburgh
Kirk's pick: Pittsburgh

#16 Texas Tech @ Iowa State

Currently, Taylor Potts is the #5 quarterback in the country in terms of passing yards leads his team to Iowa State and their #90 pass defense. Iowa State has struggled against Northern Illinois and Kansas State this season, while Texas Tech manhandled now #12 Texas last week. As long as the team that has been there so far all season for the Red Raiders shows up, the Cyclones won't have any kind of a chance.

Lee's pick: Texas Tech
Kirk's pick: Texas Tech

#4 Florida @ #9 Alabama

Alabama saw their National Championship chances shatter last week after a heartbreaking loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks, and now they'll have to regroup at home against a tough Florida team. Mark Ingram will have a lot to say this week and if he can get it rolling, Florida might just be the team in trouble this week.

Lee's pick: Alabama
Kirk's pick: Florida

#15 Georgia Tech @ Wake Forest

Last week Wake Forest were one of the teams upsetting a power team as they defeated the #11 Florida State Seminoles. This week they will have a chance to do it again, this time against Georgia Tech. If Josh Nesbitt sits out yet again the Yellow Jackets might struggle this week.

Lee's pick: Georgia Tech
Kirk's pick: Georgia Tech

Stanford @ #3 Oregon

LaMichael James has emerged as a Heisman candidate with his great play this year and him and the Oregon Ducks will be put against their biggest test thus far on the season as they take on Stanford. Andrew Luck is easily one of the best quarterbacks in the nation and is always tough defending him. They did however, lose last week to a sub par Notre Dame team so if they struggle against the Ducks they won't stand a chance.

Lee's pick: Oregon
Kirk's pick: Oregon

#14 Miami @ #21 Clemson

This could be one of the best matchups of the week as Clemson hosts Miami in an ACC matchup. What makes this a really great matchup is that Miami has relied heavily on their run game and it has been the best part of their offense, while Clemson boasts the #9 rush defense in the country. Those two sides will clash it out all game, and whichever one is on top, will decide the victor.

Lee's pick: Clemson
Kirk's pick: Miami

ECU @ #8 North Carolina

North Carolina hasn't been very impressive this season on offense, but what they lack in offense, their defense has more than made up for. The biggest thing for North Carolina is to limit turnovers and cause a lot of turnovers. On the other side we have ECU who has only really faced Virginia Tech and got destroyed, so they will most likely do the same in this one with the Tarheels' stingy defense.

Lee's pick: North Carolina
Kirk's pick: North Carolina

#7 Wisconsin @ Michigan state

Wisconsin has been one of the most impressive teams in the country this year on both sides of the ball as they have managed to score 41 points per game on average. Michigan State comes into the game with a decent record at 3-1 with good stats; however, they've only played Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Notre Dame, and Northern Colorado. With that being said, Wisconsin and big John Clay will most likely run all over the Spartans this week.

Lee's pick: Wisconsin
Kirk's pick: Wisconsin

Penn State @ #17 Iowa

Penn State started the season off ranked, but after an easy victory against Youngstown State, they lost to Alabama, Kent State, and Temple. If the Nittany Lions want any chance to get their season back on schedule, they will need to find some way of beating Iowa this week. That may be easier said than done though as the Hawkeyes have a top 16 team in points per game, total offense, and totoal defense.

Lee's pick: Iowa
Kirk's pick: Iowa

#12 Texas @ Oklahoma

Last week the Longhorns beat up on UCLA, while the Sooners lost a tough one against an unranked Cincinnati team. In this Red River Shootout though, we have a matchup of a better offensive team in Oklahoma against a better defensive team in Texas. If the defense for Texas bests the Sooner offense they will come out on top and vice versa.

Lee's pick: Texas
Kirk's pick: Texas

#1 Ohio State @ Illinois

Ohio State has gone 2 straight games without give up a single point, and this week they face the 106th ranked offense in Illinois. As long as Ohio State keeps playing they have the last couple weeks, Illinois will have no chance at even touching the Bucks.

Lee's pick: Ohio State
Kirk's pick: Ohio State

Washington @ #18 USC

USC started the season off rough with a loss to Virginia, but since then they beat Minnesota and Washington State and look to keep their Pac-10 record clean against the Huskies. On the other side, Washington hasn't had a good start as they lost to both BYU and Nebraska and their only win coming against Syracuse. This is an interesting matchup though as the Huskies were able to defeat a ranked USC team last season, so lightning could strike twice in this contest.

Lee's pick: USC
Kirk's pick: USC

#11 Virginia Tech @ NC State

Virginia Tech brings in their #5 rushing offense and the #3 rusher in the country in Darren Evans to North Carolina to take on the Wolfpack. NC State has seems to be an average team at best and have lost to both Central Florida and Georgia Tech, but have also beat Cincinnati. As long as Darren Evans continues to bruise opposing defenses the Hokies won't have anything to worry about.

Lee's pick: Virginia Tech
Kirk's pick: Virginia Tech

#2 Boise State @ New Mexico State

Lee's pick: Boise State
Kirk's pick: Boise State

Boise State is poised to face off in the National Championship game with their new #2 ranking and New Mexico State won't come close to dethroning the BCS Buster powerhouse.

Tennessee @ #19 LSU

Both of these teams seem to be marginally bad this season as neither team has really broken out and been a power house. The last two weeks the Tigers have barely squeaked out of two games with wins against Mississippi state by 1 point and West Virginia by 4 points. Tennessee has also barely squeaked out of their matchup last week, but it was against UAB and only by 3 points. With that being said I think LSU will roll over Tennessee.

Lee's pick: LSU
Kirk's pick: LSU

#24 Nevada @ UNLV

Nevada joins the land of the ranked teams and goes to Las Vegas to take on the Rebels. The Wolfpack has one of the best offenses in the country as they are able to put points on the board like anyone, and while facing the 98th ranked defense, they should be able to continue their ways.

Lee's pick: Nevada
Kirk's pick: Nevada

Lee's Total Points: 67/82
Kirk's Total Points: 64/82

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Doug Nussmeier (NCAA 11)

Nolan Washington ends first half with a pick 6 to boost Cougars

Defense Plays Big, Run Game Comes Alive In Win

Pasadena, CA -- The Cougars and the Bruins came into this game with identical records and a loss in conference play, so this was going to be the game that could right the ship for one of these teams. Both teams had struggled both on offense and defense so far this season so this was either going to be a big time offensive game or a lot of defense; this one had a little of both.

Things started off quickly for the Cougars and Jeff Tuel, who came into play as one of the biggest passers in the country due to the lack of a run game. He was able to make a few passes down field, and ended off the first drive with a nice 19 yard pass to always hot Jeffrey Solomon. Once the Bruins took the field they decided to stick to a run game that was marginally affective. They were able to get into Cougar territory, but after a couple stops All-American kicker Kai Forbath was unable to sink the deep field goal. After a quick three and out UCLA would once again get the ball and stick to the run game. This time they were able to run over the Cougars as Jonathan Franklin was able to pick up a block and score from 20 yards out.

As the second quarter started it was evident that the corners on the outside for the Bruins would be tough to break, but in the middle Tuel was able to work quite a bit, and on the first drive of the quarter was able to find Daniel Blackledge for a 19 yard score. The rest of the quarter was given to the defense as both sides would force punts, but on what might have been UCLA's last drive of the half Richard Brehaut threw a pass that Nolan Washington was able to jump and take it back to the house to put Washington State up 21-7. That probably should have been the last drive of the half, but after getting the ball back and a few plays Brehaut was able to connect with Ricky Marvay on a 68 yard pass.

The third quarter started off as another defensive bout that neither team's offense could conquer. This stand was finally stopped more than half way through the quarter when Brehaut threw a pass to Taylor Embree who was able to find the endzone to tie the game back up. Karstetter would get a decent return after the touchdown and Tuel would start working it up field. The run game still had been seemingly nonexistent, but as the Cougars were down on the 1 yard line Tuel scrambled and put it in himself to go ahead.

In the forth, the Cougar defense was all over the Bruins and they were unable to do anything. On the offensive side, Washington State was basically just winding down the clock with a lot of runs. On an off play for James Montgomery, Chantz Staden would get the ball and put it in from 10 yards out. UCLA would have to heavily rely on the passing game by this point, but Washington State was having none of that. The Cougars would get the ball back and would let the clock run down with more running plays, and with 45 seconds left Staden would find the endzone once again, this time after a 37 yard gain. There was no coming back from this for the Bruins and they would fall to 0-2 in conference play as the Cougars would climb to 1-1

I saw where UTEPS David Buckram got a player of the week honors in Week 5. That guy is insane on this game. He was a heisman candidate in my first season and I got lucky when we played them... he was hurt.
