Weaver sells Jags

Weaver with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, announcing the sale of the Jaguars

July 15, 2009- Jacksonville, FL-- In a sudden and unexpected move, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been sold to Tampa, FL business tycoon Jay Randolph, an emotional Wayne Weaver announced today.

Weaver has owned the Jags since it was awarded to his company, Shoe Carnival, in 1995. Weaver said that his age was "beginning to get to him," but he wanted the team to be "left in the right hands," and believe he has found those in Jay Randolph.

Randolph is only 28, and has found his fortune by forming and selling plans for alternate fuel resources. He gained $2 Billion in a deal with the U.S. government in 2007 and sold his company for an additional $7 Billion in March of this year.

Randolph addressed the media directly after Weaver, and said that despite the rumors going around, the Jags would not be moving to Los Angeles. He emphatically reiterated he was dedicated to keeping the Jaguars in Jacksonville.

He did not endorse Coach Jack Del Rio or any of the Jags staff, saying he would evaluate the team once the season was over. However, he did say that GM Gene Smith, who was hired in January of this year, was fired and Randolph himself would be taking over the GM duties.

He told the media that his plan was to continue to build the Jags into a team that could pound the ball, control the clock, and play stifling defense.

Randolph mentioned players such as RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Rookie Tackles Eben Britton and Eugene Monroe, TE Zach Miller, and DB Rashean Mathis as building blocks for the future. When asked about current starting QB David Garrard, Randolph said, "David Garrard is our Starting QB. He will be our starting QB for this season. Like the coaching staff, Garrard will be evaluated after the season."

Whatever Randolph decides, this looks to be quite an interesting season and off-season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I plan on simulating the first season. A short season recap should be up sometime tomorrow. Also, this is on Madden 10, I haven't bought 11 yet.

Garrard stripped of Captain status

Jacksonville, FL-- The Jacksonville Jaguars announced today that David Garrard had been stripped of his status as team captain, a position he has held since becoming the Jags unquestioned starter in 2007.

Garrard was replaced as a captain by CB Rashean Mathis, who joins HB Maurice Jones-Drew and LOLB Daryl Smith as captains. This is especially worrisome for Garrard, seeing as new owner Jay Randolph refused to tell the media that Garrard was going to be his starting QB beyond this season.

When asked for comment, Garrard simply said, "It's up to them. I don't care. I don't need a badge on my jersey to lead this team. I can handle it, I'm a big boy."

In a statement issued by the team, Randolph says, "We as an organization felt that Rashean is a building block for our future, and decided to name him as captain as a sort of endorsement. It is more of a support for Rashean than a slight at David."

Despite this claim, a source in the organization said that Randolph hasn't wanted Garrard as the team's QB from the start, and Randolph asked about how much of a cap hit the team would take had it cut Garrard with the 9 back-ups that were cut a week after Randolph took ownership of the team. Randolph allegedly rolled his eyes and muttered something about Wayne Weaver being a "senile old bat," for signing Garrard to a 6 year, $60M contract in April of last year. The source told this reporter that the team would have taken a $24M cap hit had they dropped Garrard.

I like this, will follow. I like the move with Garrard because he is a rather inconsistent QB sometimes, and I do believe a trade or cut sounds reasonable.
