With three unbeaten remaining in Auburn, Georgia Tech and Boise State, as well as a lingering 11-1 Big Ten Champion Ohio State, Championship Weekend has provided NCAA Football with an anything could happen situation involving those 4 referenced teams.
WAC Champions Boise State and Big Ten Champion Ohio State will remain idle at their respective #3 and #4 ranking going into Conference Championship play. While their destiny lies in the hands of someone losing, both teams could find themselves playing one another in the BCS National Championship game.
Here are how the Conference Championships are playing out:
The SEC Championship is perhaps the most dangerous game being played. Although most claim Auburn's last test was last week against Alabama, the Florida Gators cannot be taken lightly and could very well play spoliers in Auburn's fairytale season.
Florida is a team that forces turnovers, ranking #2 in all of college foobtall in that category. This is also a Florida team that ranks #27th in the nation in total defense and have playmakers on that side of the ball that can give Heisman Contender Cameron Newton fits.
Between the top 2 BCS teams, #2 Georgia Tech without questions enters the weekend with the more easier route to the National Championship game. However, if Florida State can stop the running attack of Sophomore Adam Robinson and Heisman front runner Ricky Stanzi, and force Stanzi to beat them in the air, the FSU secondary have enough talent to put FSU in a position to pull off the upset.
The game will depend on FSU's ability to establish a running game and keep the ball out of Stanzi's hands. If the clock cannot be controlled, then it will more than likely be a long night for the Seminoles.
Although there are no National Championship implications in this football game, this is very well the most likely game to put out the best match-up.
Oklahoma Sophomore Landry Jones has established himself as an elite college quarterback in throwing for nearly 4,000 Yards and 35 Touchdowns while only getting intercepted 6 times.
Behind Jones is All-American, top 5 NFL projected draft pick Demarco Murray who has rounded up 1,306 Yards with 10 Touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
Nebraska has a top 5 NFL prospect itself in Defensive Back Prince Amukamara, who consistantly takes a third of the field away from opposing offenses.
Nebraska will have its hands full against the explosing Sooner offense, but has the ability behind the freshman dual threat quarterback Taylor Martinez to move the ball and control the game clock.
This game is more of an indicator than anything that the C-USA is starting to establish itself as a legitimate contending conference. Both teams have broken into the Top 25 and both are filled with young talent.
This is a rematch of last week where SMU defeated ECU 23-13. It is also a match-up of the C-USA's leading passers with SMU's young Sophomore Kyle Padron throwing for over 4,200 yards and 25 Touchdowns, including breaking the school record for yards in a season, yards in a game and touchdowns in a game. Pardron also broke the NCAA record for yards in a game.
ECU Junior Dominique Davis threw for 3,239 yards while landing 26 touchdowns. Davis has been the most efficient between the two.
Northern Illinois will be playing for its first MAC Conference title in school history, while Ohio is looking to claim its first title since 1968.
Northern Illinois will be playing without its star Senior Defensive End who lead all of the MAC with 10.5 sacks this season.
The key to this football game will be NIU Senior running back Chad Spann who is looking to break the 1,000 yard marker on Saturday. If Ohio cannot contain Spann, NIU will likely ease into its first Conference Title and bid to the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl.
