Wildcat Press

Wildcats pull off victory at #18 UNC

The battle that took place in Chapel Hill between two emerging programs was a struggle for both sides. The two teams fought back and forth trading punts and scores throughout the game, with Arizona finally sealing the win late in the fourth quarter.

Both teams punted away on their first possession and on the Tar Heels second possession, they struck lightning. Jackson found White open along the sideline and hit his receiver, shedding the tackle, White raced down the sideline, 72 yards for the opening score.

After trading possessions once again, it was the Wildcats turn to march the length of the field for a touch down. Freshman quarterback Blake Hargrave - whose twin brother, Brady, is the starter at Indiana - hit his roommate Blake Walker on a fade pattern from ten yards out to tie the score at seven.

The second quarter went along much like the first. North Carolina engineered a 12-play, 74-yard drive spanning 8:12 that ended with Johnson connecting on a 37-yard FG. Arizona struck back, going 78 yards in ten plays. Hargrave found his tight end Everett underneath the coverage and hit him for the go-ahead score with seven seconds left in the half to put the Wildcats up 14-10.

After halftime, the Tar Heels would convert Hargrave's only mistake into points, a 22-yard FG by Johnson. Hargrave would redeem himself on the next drive. He found Mike Payne cutting across the middle of the field for a 31-yard TD strike.

With a chance to pull within a touchdown, the Tar Heels would miss the 50-yard FG. Arizona would capitalize on the next drive to extend their lead to 28-13, in the fourth quarter.

UNC would answer back 2:30 later as Jackson and White hooked up again for a score, this time from 31 yards. They had the chance to rally late after forcing the Wildcats to punt after four plays. Instead, Jackson would be sacked for the fourth time, defensive end Whitehead's third of the game, on fourth and goal from the seven.

Arizona would put the game out of reach as Luke Rivers bounced an inside run to the outside and shed a tackler on his way to a 24-yd TD run, making the score 35-20.

Jackson remarked after the game, "This was a tough loss. We'll bounce back though. We can still continue to grow and get better."

"I was concerned about our pass defense going into this game," Coach Winters replied. "Aside from those two big plays, they played pretty well. Our defensive line did a great job getting pressure on their QB. That's what got us over the hump in this game. And our offense did what they had to do."

The Wildcats look ahead to another ranked ACC opponent in #10-ranked Miami on the road. After that, the Wildcats return home to face #7 Iowa before conference play starts.

Roughneck Report

What happened in Wisconsin??

Madison WI - What happened in Wisconsin?

Northern Alaska silenced the crowd at Camp Randall as they pulled off the biggest win in school history, upsetting #8-ranked Wisconsin, 37-30.

"This is just... wow," halfback Marcus Hendricks uttered after the clock read 0:00.

The Badger faithful made plenty of noise for the entire game, but when the game ended, they were in stunned silence. Wisconsin and its might had just been upset by a small school far to the north.

The game was tense throughout. Wisconsin relied heavily on their hulking running back to chew the clock and yardage. He responded by putting up a career game, gaining 264 yards on 26 carries and a pair of touchdowns. But that wasn't enough for Badger star to overcome the pesky Drillers.

Wisconsin punished the Driller defense by pounding the ball right at them. But Northern Alaska persevered and hung around, challenging the Badger defense to stop them. But they never could get the offense off the field when it mattered.

The game started off in traditional Big 10 fashion as Wisconsin pushed forward with the run, but it was Northern Alaska who got on the scoreboard first with a 35-yd FG from Clausen. The half would continue like this where each team would score in return. At the break, it was knotted at 13-13.

A break for Northern Alaska came when they were able to hold Wisconsin to a FG on their second possession of the third quarter. This was after they scored TDs on their two possessions. Heading to the fourth, the Drillers held a slim 27-23 lead.

With 6:13 left in the fourth, Wisconsin was able to tie the score at 30-30. After forcing a punt, Wisconsin was poised to take the game from Northern Alaska. They moved the ball into Driller territory with ease. Wisconsin quarterback James Moore took the snap and faked the handoff to Johnson. Driller linebacker Sonny Hackett came on the blitz and hit Moore as he released the ball. Defensive tackle Heath Taylor was there to intercept the errant pass, giving hope to the Drillers.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Mark Stokes showed that his rotator cuff was perfectly fine after last season's training camp injury that required reconstructive surgery. He had pinpoint accuracy on his throws, going 26-for-29 for 411 yards. He tossed three TDs to only one INT. His biggest pass occurred with just over one minute left.

"We were just trying to see what we could get with a screen there at the end," Stokes remarked. "I was able to flip it out to Marcus (Hendricks) and the blocking set up perfectly for him. He got a seam and broke it."

On that play, Hendricks took the pass and followed his blocking before making the safety miss. After that it was a foot race.

Linebacker Joe Russell would intercept a Moore pass with 0:20 left to seal the victory for the Drillers.

"I'm real proud of these young men," Coach Adam Weston spoke. "They showed a ton heart and passion out on that field today. They weren't gonna let the Badgers bully them around. And when it came down to it, they just wanted it more."

This marks the biggest win in school history for the Drillers. Northern Alaska was 1-27 against ranked opponents with a 19-game losing streak. They had also lost all eleven games when their opponent was in the top-10. The Drillers hope their luck continues as the travel to Salt Lake City next week to square off against #19-ranked Utah.

Thunder Report

Key penalties, 28-point second quarter spur T-Birds to victory

Muskegon, MI - Wileyville entered the game facing one of the top rushing offenses in Georgia Tech with a triple option attack that regularly gains 300+ yards per game.

"We set a plan to stack the box against their option," Defensive Coordinator Tom David remarked after the game. "If they were going to beat us, they needed to do it through the air. I have complete faith in our corners to cover their receivers one-on-one throughout the game."

The T-Birds didn't allow the first option to even work, stuff fullback carries at the line of scrimmage. After that, safeties flew to the pitch while linebackers went for the quarterback. Most times it worked. But Georgia Tech was able to break off a few long runs against the defensive gameplan. The Yellow Jackets did break off a couple more, including an 83-yard TD but was called back for holding.

Key penalties like that one killed many of the Georgia Tech drives. They finished with ten penalties, eight of which were from the offensive side of the ball, mostly holding.

Turnovers were critical in the T-Birds success as well. With 0:18 left in the half, the Yellow Jackets coughed up a fumble in the defensive red zone. This allowed the T-Birds to extend the lead at halftime. An earlier interception set up another quick TD for Wileyville in a 28-point second quarter that blew open a close game.

"Our defense shined in this one," Coach Jay replied. "They didn't allow for Georgia tech to get much rhythm in their offense. Our offense did a great job as well. It was a great game all around on the T-Bird side."

Wileyville goes on the road next, at #2-ranked Oregon, to battle another option team. This game will be far tougher for the T-Birds. Not only do they have to contend with an offense that can attack in many different ways, but they face a very hostile crowd in the Autzen Zoo.

Husky Report

Huskies dominate Syracuse on way to win

Syracuse, NY - Ottawa came into this game looking for a dominating win. They found it as they played consistently on both side of the ball on route to a 56-13 win over the Orange.

Leading the offensive charge was halfback Corbin McMahon. He rushed for 151 yards on 25 carries, caught three passes for 22 yards, and ended up in the endzone four times - three on the ground. Add in 52 yards in returns and McMahon accounted for 225 yards on 32 touches, just 51 yards less than Syracuse was able to muster.

"Mac (Corbin McMahon) was great for us today," Coach Crosby remarked. "He wanted the ball in his hands today and he didn't disappoint."

The Husky defense started the game in style, forcing Syracuse into three-and-outs on their first three possessions. It wasn't until almost midway through the second quarter that the orange were able to move the chains for a first down.

The offense had little issues all game as they moved the ball well against the Syracuse defense. The Huskies would rack up just shy of 500 yards of offense on the day while controlling the ball for almost 36:00, nearly one-third of it in the first quarter.

"Their defense played us great," the Syracuse coach answered. "They forced us into bad situations and got our offense off the field. Their offense was great today too. That #13 kid did a great job against us. We'll have to work on what we did wrong this week so this doesn't happen again."

Ottawa travels to #4-ranked Virginia Tech next week for a showdown with the Hokies. The Hokies will be coming off a prime-time battle with #3-ranked Boise State.
