For Third Game in a Row, Green Wave Win in Exciting Fashion
Brent Comardelle fights for one of his two touchdowns on the day
College Station, TX -- Winning games late and in exciting fashion is nothing new to Tulane this season. In their first two games the Green Wave needed overtime to knock off SEC rival LSU and TCU. In this game, Tulane lead almost the entire game. That is until Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill hit Christine Michael for a 51 yard touchdown with 2:57 remaining in the game to put Texas A&M ahead 28-27. With a raucous "12th Man" crowd bearing down on them, fourth year junior quarterback Robert Griffin came onto the field looking to lead the Green Wave on a winning drive. Griffin and the Tulane offense would nickel and dime their way down the field into Aggie territory. After moving the ball into field goal range, Tulane head coach Sam Winters called or three straight run plays that only gained a total of seven yards. Texas A&M wisely used their timeouts in order to have a shot at one last drive. Tulane kicker Cairo Santos was called upon to attempt a potential game winning 38 yard field goal. The sophomore kicker calmly made the kick, and Tulane took a 30-28 lead with just 0:51 left in the game. After Texas A&M completed two passes to move the ball to the Tulane 48 yard line, the Aggies were facing a 3rd and 10 with just 0:09 left. On 3rd down Tannehill threw a deep pass to the endzone that was knocked down by a Green Wave defender. Texas A&M had 0:02 left and had one last desperation heave to the endzone left to try and win the ballgame. Unfortunately or the Aggies it wasn't mean to be after the Hail Mary attempt was batted to the ground, and Tulane pulled off the shocking upset on the road over the 13th ranked Aggies.
"What a game! I couldn't be happier with the way our guys hung in there. You've got to give it up to Robert [Griffin]. After being benched in last week's game, I put him in the game in the second half to see if he could give us something. It would have been easy for him to come out and wilt under the pressure. However, he remained calm all half long, and this win is due in large part to his poise. The kid came up big today when we needed him most." -Sam Winters
