Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

Islander Times

Kicker Kainoa, Quick-Strike Offense Lead Pipeline to Victory

Oahu, HI - Pipeline has an offense built to move the ball in huge chunks with a potent passing game and speed on the edges with a large offensive line to protect the passer. Pipeline needed every bit of their high-octane offense in this game.

California came out looking to keep the Pipeline offense on the sidelines by pounding the running game and controlling the clock and tempo. In that regard, Cal succeeded. The Bears held the ball for an astounding 44:41, 23:26 in the first half and 21:15 in the second half. That left Pipeline with the ball for only 15:19 in the game.

"We really controlled the clock," the Cal coach remarked. "We wanted to keep their offense on the sideline and we did that. But they can strike so fast on offense that it didn't matter for them in the second half. They moved it really quickly."

Cal put their gameplan in motion right from the start, going on a 16-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a 36-yard field goal. The drive chewed the first 9:44 of the game. After Pipeline answered with field goal of their own four minutes later, Cal launched on a drive that would consume 7:30. This one ended with a seven-yard touchdown run by Frank Wilson.

Then disaster struck the Islanders. Quarterback Jeff Dean would be intercepted on the next three possessions. Cal would turn all three into touchdowns, two more from Wilson rushes and a passing touchdown from Tim Johnson to Trenton Robinson.

The disastrous quarter for the Islanders would lead to a 28-point quarter for the Bears. Cal would take a 31-3 lead into halftime.

To start the second half, Dean would find his receivers open for big gains. This would move the Islanders into scoring position quickly but they would have to settle for another Kainoa field goal.

Cal would be forced to punt on their next possession and Pipeline's offense came back out looking for a quick strike. Dean found Blake Kelley open and after shucking a tackler, Kelley would go 68 yards for the touchdown.

On Cal's next possession, the Islander defense would rise to the occasion. Heath Tate would nail Wilson in the backfield and knock the ball loose. Cameron Cronin would scoop up the fumble and return it 25 yards for the touchdown. With the PAT, Pipeline cut into the lead, now trailing 31-20.

Riding the huge momentum shift, the Pipeline defense would stiffen again and force another punt. Dean would methodically lead Pipeline 90 yards down the field, capping the drive with a one-yard TD pass to Blake Pickler. This would send the game to the fourth quarter with a 31-27 score.

After another Cal fumble, this one knocked loose by Jake Ingram and recovered by defensive leader, linebacker Mike Harper, set up Pipeline deep in Cal territory. Rory Cohen, the muscle in Pipeline's attack, would drop would-be tacklers on his way to a 31-yard TD run and give the Islanders a 34-31 lead.

Cal would make a critical mistake once again. With the Bears starting to move the ball once again, Tim Johnson would make a dangerous pass on 3rd-&-7. Linebacker Adam Stevens would be in the right spot and make the interception.

After moving the ball quickly into the red zone, the Islanders would stall out. Kainoa would add his third field goal of the game to push the lead to six, 37-31 with just over eleven minutes to play.

The two teams would trade punts on their next possessions. With a little over eight minutes to play, Cal would launch on a 14-play, 70-yard drive that consumed 7:30. Tim Johnson would find Damien Robinson cutting across the field, hitting him in stride for the touchdown. The PAT would give Cal a 38-37 lead with just 0:43 left on the clock.

Dean would take the field at his own 22-yard line and forty second to get into field goal range. On the first play, he hit Kelley on a short route. Kelley broke the first tackle and was finally dragged down after 26 yards. Three plays later, Pipeline would be at the Cal 24 with 19 seconds. A holding call would push them back ten yards, but on the next play, Dean found Pickler for 16 yards.

A quick timeout set up a called run to line up Kainoa for the winning attempt. Cal tried icing the young kicker. After the Cal timeout, Kainoa calmly stroked a 36 yard field goal as time ran out to give Pipeline the 40-38 win on Kickoff Weekend.

"For such young men, Dean and Kainoa have ice water in their veins," Coach Manumala said. "The situations didn't phase them one bit. They just stepped up."

When asked how the Cal timeout affected him, Kainoa responded, "Nah, brah. It didn't bother me one bit. I was just thinking about being in the tube all calm and relaxed. Then when we got ready again, I just knocked it through, ya know."

"Coach told us to just settle down out there in the second half and play our game," Dean answered after being asked about the adjustments at halftime. "He told me not to worry about the first half. There was nothing I could do about it so I should just let loose and be calm about it."

Pipeline gets another shot at a Pac 10 opponent next week when Arizona State comes to the island. This next game should be an aerial display as both teams like to pass often.

Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

College Football Live

Saturday's Games Provide Wild Weekend

ESPN - This Kickoff Weekend provided some exciting games. We witnessed games that came down to the wire and some that were over long before that. There were major upsets this weekend. FBS-newcomer Milford tops our list of upsets this Saturday as they rallied from being down 25 points right after halftime to come back to win 66-63 in a thrilling game. Next week Milford has an equally dominating team to face in top-ranked Alabama. Alabama survived an upset bid themselves, squeaking by Hoosier State 36-33 in double overtime. Horizon State also needed overtime to get by Arkansas 48-41. Prescott Valley and Wileyville were the benefactors of a multitude of turnovers in their dominant wins over college powerhouses.

With all these upseets over ranked teams, who knows how this will change the face of the Top-25? Teams ranked second, seventh, sixteenth, seventeenth, nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-second through twenty-fourth all lost on opening weekend. This makes for a major shake-up in the rankings for next week. Also, many of these shocking-upset victors play ranked teams again next week. If they perform at the same level, we may have quite another wild weekend of college football.

Before we get too far into previewing next week's games, let's take a look at our two marquee games in primetime tonight, #5 Boise State at #7 Virginia Tech and #19 Oregon State at #8 TCU.

TCU Starts Fast Against #19 Oregon State

Fort Worth, TX - TCU came into this game looking to knock off a ranked BCS opponent and prove that they can hang with the "big boys" of college football. When the dust settled, the Horned Frogs walked away with the victory and a place among the BCS talks.

Oregon State came out strong and quickly moved the ball down the field for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead on the opening possession of the game. TCU answered back with a TD drive of their own, ending with Holt's first of four TD passes in the game. TCU would jump ahead on their next possession after forcing the Beavers to punt.

The second quarter would become a game of field position as both defenses stepped up their play. TCU was finally able to crack the Beaver defense with 1:23 left in the half to move ahead 21-7.

An ill-fated pass, intercepted by Mackey, would send the TCU offense back out on the field for another chance to extend the lead. Holt and offense would do just that, scoring on the first play, a 27-yard TD pass from Holt to Smith.

TCU would take a 28-7 lead into halftime. TCU would add a 40 yard field goal to push out to a 31-7 lead on their first possession of the second half. The Horned Frogs would cruise the rest of the way for a 31-17 victory over the Beavers.

"Our defense played well enough today to get us the win," the TCU coach remarked. "Our offense had moments of brilliance and moments of stupidity. That's something we are going to work on this week. We need to get both aspects better if we want to keep competing at a high level."

#5 Boise State Dominates #7 Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, VA - If there was every any doubt about Boise State being a quality football program, the Broncos erased all doubts in a game that was far worse than the score tells. The 49-31 score doesn't show what really happened in the game.

Alex Robinson cemented his name firmly into Heisman talks with his school-record performance. Robinson went 24/32 for 402 yards and 7 touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter for the subs.

Both teams started a little sluggish to begin. Boise State was able to score first after trading away a pair of punts to start the game. A. Robinson hit M. Robinson for a 28-yard pass to open the scoring.

Towards the end of the first quarter and into the second, Boise State began to find their rhythm, both offensively and defensively. The Broncos used Virginia Tech turnovers and 3-&-out drives to punish the Hokies, jumping out to a 42-7 lead at half time.

Boise State would extend the lead to 49-7 in the third quarter. After that score, the Bronco starters would come off the field for the second team. Virginia tech would add meaningless points against the Bronco subs to make the final look closer than what it really was - a Bronco thrashing of a top-10 ranked team.

Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

Dragon Tales

Dragons Take Advantage of Mistake-Prone Gators

Gainesville, FL - The Florida Gators came into Sunday's game with a lot of questions regarding who would take over as team leaders after numerous seniors and top players left school. What we saw was not a typical Florida team. We saw the Gators get manhandled in all three phases of the game because of mental errors, mistakes, and a complete collapse of will. The weather didn't help the cause either as rain poured throughout the game.

From the very first possession, New Holland set to establish their dominance. After a quick 3-&-out, New Holland got a piece of the punt - they would later block one - and took over on the Gator 35 yard line. New Holland would make their only costly miscue on the drive. Sims would recover a fumble ans return it 77 yards for the touchdown.

After the fumble, New Holland would find an extra gear and drive down the field quickly. They would score on a four-yard run by Brett Ward to tie the score, 7-7.

Another 3-&-out by Florida left New Holland in good starting position. It would not take long for the Dragons to find the end zone once again. Jeff Payne would hit Vince Ross on an out route. Shoddy arm tackling would allow for Ross to go the distance for a 60-yard TD reception.

The game would go from ugly to even uglier in the second quarter. Florida would make numerous mistakes, whether not picking up the blitz or making costly penalties. Two New Holland drives were bolstered by four facemask penalties. These Florida errors combined with New Holland's determination shot the Dragons out to a 38-7 halftime lead.

The second half was just as ugly as the second quarter. Florida continued to make costly penalties, either killing their drive or helping New Holland's. In all, Florida would commit eleven penalties for 109 yards, seven would be facemask penalties.

When the proverbial dust settled, New Holland walked out of The Swamp with a dominating victory, 62-7. Nothing shows the pure one-sidedness of this matchup than the stat line. Florida could only muster 43 yards of total offense while going 0-for-13 on 3rd down conversions. Florida also fumbled seven times, losing two, and gave up eight sacks.

"I'm [expletive] embarrassed," the Florida coach fumed. "I'm [expletive] sick to my stomach about this game. We didn't do [expletive] out there."

When asked about his feelings of the game, New Holland coach, John Payne Sr. remarked, "I'm proud of how we fought out there. Florida was playing cheap with late hits and dragging us down by our facemasks. But I'm proud that we didn't stoop to that level and just hit them where it would do the most damage - the scoreboard."

New Holland travels to Wake Forest next week to open ACC play. The Dragons are on the road the following week at Ohio State before coming home to host rival Michigan.

Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

Sabercat Weekly

Panhandle Shootout Lives up to Name, Hype

Plainview, TX - The Panhandle Shootout lived up to its name in this edition of the rivalry matchup. Both teams were on fire as a total of 105 points and over 1,200 yards of offense were put up by both squads combined. In the end, it was the Red River defense who made the better plays in this game. Another sign of the hatred these schools only 55 miles apart share is they combined for 23 penatlies for 248 yards.

The Red River defense, despite giving up 624 yards through the air and 35 points to Texas Tech, made key plays to give the Sabercats the 70-35 win. The Sabercats intercepted Steve Black five times on the day, two of those returned for touchdowns. The defense was also able to muster four sacks, all of which came on critical plays on third or fourth down.

"We have a lot to work on defensively before next week," Defensive Coordinator John Schultz remarked. "We can't give up the yards and points we did and expect to win. However, forcing five turnovers and adding two TDs on the defensive side was a huge plus for this unit."

The offense was able to control the game through a potent rushing attack. The Sabercats stable of running backs racked up 461 yards on the ground, led by a pair of Colts - Colt Heathers and Colt Day - who rushed for 252 yards and 165 yards respectively on 16 carries apiece. Both backs also found the endzone three times each.

"We usually like to be more balanced in our offensive approach," Coach Kyle Nicholls replied. "But when your rushing game is just on fire like it was, you gotta keep feeding it the ball. We need to work on a few things next week though to get better. We made a lot of mistakes."

Texas Tech looked ready to dominate the game right from the gates as they quickly moved the ball to midfield in two plays. But the Sabercat defense stiffened and forced a punt after getting a hand on two consecutive passes. The Sabercats then drove right down the field to answer and take a 7-0 lead on an 11-yard TD pass from Vick Pedroza to J.C. Payne.

Red River would extend their lead to 14-0 on their next drive. Colt Heathers would break a 24-yard run for the score, his first of three rushing touchdowns.

On the first play of the second quarter, Heathers would find the end zone after another long run. This one came from 38 yards out and give Red River a 21-0 lead.

Texas Tech would answer back, cutting into the lead with a 15-yard TD pass from Black to Watson. After a trade of possessions, Pedroza would find Jason Newell in the flat. Newell would shake the defender and race 38 yards for the touchdown in the closing minutes of the half to give the Sabercats a 21-point lead, 28-7.

Texas Tech would march right down the field with 1:09 left in the half. The Red Raiders would get to the five yard line with 0:06 left in the half. The Sabercats had other ideas as Black was intercepted for the second time in the game as the half ended.

The third quarter was marked by the big play or the long drive. Red River used big plays to set up Colt Day's short TD run. Texas Tech would strike back fast with a 67-yard TD pass from Black to Jude. Red River would sustain a lengthy drive in retaliation and then Texas Tech had one of their own. Colt Heathers would close out the scoring in the third quarter with an 83-yard scoring run. The electric quarter would end with Red River on top 49-21.

The fourth quarter was just as electric. The Sabercats would return Black's fourth and fifth interceptions of the game for a touchdown, one from 67 yards out and the other from 25 yards away. Sandwiched between the Sabercat pick-sixes was a 50-yard TD run by Colt Day, his third of the day. Black had all the scoring for Texas Tech in the fourth. He was forced to scramble and ran it in from one and seven yards out.

With the 70-35 win, Red River avenged the 59-14 loss from last season. This marquee win for the Sabercats also gives them a good deal of momentum going into their conference opener next week against Tulsa at home.

Others receiving votes: LSU (182), Oklahoma State (164), Navy (77), Arkansas (64), Clemson (55), North Carolina (32), Washington (2)

Dropped out: Pittsburgh (#16), LSU (#17), Arkansas (#20), North Carolina (#22), Utah (#23), Cincinnati (#24)

Alabama managed to cling to the top spot after this week's near-upset against Hoosier State. If the Crimson Tide put forth another half-hearted effort this week against upstart Milford, they may not hold that top spot any longer.

Boise State, by virtue of a dominant win over former #7 and now #12 Virginia Tech, jumps over #3 Texas and #4 Oregon to lay claim to the #2 spot in the polls. Boise State needs to continue to play well to hold onto that spot. Although it may be likely that they get jumped by a 13-0 team, late in the season, if they continue to win. But for now, the Broncos hold onto #2.

Texas remains at #3 in the polls after a dominant win over Rice. Texas still has two ranked team on their schedule right now, but there's potential for more ranked opponents. Should they win out, they may likely overtake Boise State for the BCS Title Game.

Oregon sits in the #4 spot again. They soundly defeated an FCS program in their opener. Oregon looked in top form in their win last weekend and if they keep up the level of play, they should stay at the top of the polls.

TCU rounds out the top five. They handled Oregon State easily in their primetime matchup. TCU is looking to be a BCS buster again this year and if they continue to do what they did to Oregon State, they'll be sitting pretty for a BCS invite.

Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, and USC are teams six through ten. These teams, except USC who slid into the #10 spot without even playing this weekend, all won in dominating fashion.

In the #11 to #15 spots, Miami moved up three spots to #11. Virginia Tech dropped to #12 in their loss. Oklahoma and Penn State both moved up with impressive wins to #13 and #14 respectively. Ohio State fell all the way to #15 after their humiliating upset at the hands of Prescott Valley.

In spots #16 to #20, we see newcomers to the rankings. Florida State moves all the way up from #21 to #16 after their impressive win. Florida fell to #17 after their upset loss in The Swamp. Prescott Valley is ranked for the first time in school history after their huge win in The Horseshoe. Arizona moves back into the ranking again at #19. New Holland returns to the rankings again after 26 years after an impressive performance in the elements at The Swamp.

Rounding out the Top-25, Oregon State fell two spots to #21. Houston jumped up three spots to #22. Returning to the rankings are West Virginia at #23, Georgia at #24, and Auburn at #25.

Pittsburgh, LSU, Arkansas, North Carolina, Utah, and Cincinnati all dropped out by way of loss this week. With a good slate of games this week, things can change again with an upset or two at the top.

ESPNNews Update

Coaching Carousel Kicks Off early this Season

ESPN - Breaking news out of the state of Michigan today is very troubling for coaches at the top two teams in the state. Everyone knew that the seat at Michigan was the hottest in the nation and it just burned the coach there.

Michigan's head coach, Rod Richards was fired after a tumultuous two seasons plus a game. Under Richards, several streaks were broken. Unfortunately the streaks broken were not good as Michigan's consecutive winning seasons and their bowl appearance streaks were both shattered by this coach. Michigan fans and alumni had had enough and Coach Richards got the axe.

In a statement prepared by Athletic Director Joe Marx, he stated, "We have a tradition of winning here at Michigan. Coach Richards was brought in to continue that tradition and even take it to the next level. However, that was not the case this time. We here at Michigan felt it was time to cut ties with Richards and begin again with a newer approach. In the interim, our coordinators will share the responsibilities of head coach while we search for a replacement."

No names have surfaced yet as to who may be the next coach at Michigan. It is also unknown whether a replacement will come during the season or after the season has concluded.

Other news out of Michigan is that Michigan State Head Coach Dan Anthony has been hospitalized after an apparent heart attack. Coach Anthony was rushed to the hospital Monday night after suffering from chest pains. At the hospital, it was found that he had a blockage in the arteries to his heart. Surgery was successful but it is doubtful that Coach Anthony will return this season.

Coach Anthony's wife delivered a written statement from the coach earlier this morning, "I am in good spirits after this successful surgery. However, this has caused me to reflect on my life as a coach. My health has suffered great over the last couple of years and I am concerned for that. I am unable to return to coaching this season so I am resigning my position as Head Coach of the Spartans."

Athletic Director Gordon Wyatt responded by naming defensive coordinator Dalton Henry as the interim Head Coach. AD Wyatt also said that if the Spartans have success this year under Henry, he will remain as the Head Coach for the following season.

Other coaching news in college football is that sources from Texas have confirmed that this will be Coach Black's last season. His contract was set to expire at the end of the season, and Coach Black has decided to retire. Early candidates to take over for Coach Black next season are Offensive Coordinator Steve Highsmith, Nevada's Bill Pulliam, Jon Gruden, Justin Bolt, and Alex Carrolls.

College Football Round-Up

The Week in Review

AP - The Kickoff Weekend of college football has come and gone. Like always, the college football season is full of drama. We'll go through the winners and losers of Kickoff Weekend around college football.

Winners...

Milford

The biggest winner of the week has to be Milford. In their first FBS game ever, the Patriots rallied from a 42-17 deficit at the beginning of the third quarter to win 66-63 in regulation. Freshman quarterback Jesse Wolf withstood the pressure of playing in Death Valley and rallied the team. After Wolf's touchdown run to put the Patriots ahead, linebacker Josh Barnett helped to seal it with his interception with little time left.

Prescott Valley

Prescott Valley is a close second. They provided a dramatic win over a top school. The Coyotes managed to bring the #2-ranked Buckeyes crashing down to earth in their win this week.

The "Big Man" makes the interception and slowly rumbles to the end zone

Wileyville

Wileyville handed their cross-state rivals a good, old-fashioned monkey-stomping in their meeting this week. The Thunderbird win was so complete, Michigan lost two quarterbacks and a coach.

Photobucket

Steven Daigle, LSU, HB

I know it seems weird to have a player listed as a winner even though his team lost to a team who was playing their first-ever FBS game, but when you put up numbers like this, you're a winner. Daigle rushed for a school-record 381 yards on 22 carries and had a school-record six rushing touchdowns.

New Holland

New Holland handled the pressure of playing in The Swamp and in the elements. In the end, they overcame those odds and soundly defeated a mistake-prone Florida. If New Holland performs like they did against an elite squad like Florida, then watch out college football.

Losers...

LSU, Ohio State, & Michigan

Need we delve more into their embarrassment of games this week? I think everyone is already doing that for us.

This guy (in the white uniform)

He had an easy lane to keep Red River running back (say that five times fast) Colt Heathers out of the end zone. Instead, he did this...

Photobucket

Rumors out of Texas Tech are that he is out for 8-10 weeks with two broken ankles and a shattered ego. Sources also noted about 400 athletic supporters were left outside his dorm room in response to him losing his on the field.

Alabama

When you have the best, and arguably the second best, running back in the nation as well as returning nearly 75% of your starters from last season's National Championship team, why do you need two overtimes to defeat a marginal opponent? Hoosier State withstood the Crimson Tide onslaught but eventually fell in double overtime.

Photobucket
Noah Alfred dumps it off before the rush gets to him. Play ended in a TD.

Oooh, That Hurts...

Michigan's Head Coach

Michigan's Head Coach got the ax this week after the team's horrible performance against Wileyville. Also leading to his desmise as the coach was breaking the consecutive winning seasons streak and the consecutive bowl appearance streak. This loss seemed to be the final straw.

Cal

Cal had the chance to defeat Pipeline on their home turf. Instead, the Islanders go about fifty or so yards with under a minute left and do this...

Photobucket
Kainoa hits his fourth FG of the day, this one as the clock runs out

Beau Smith, Utah, HB (in red)

Utah's running back, seen airborne, found out what it was line to go head-up on a linebacker. Needless to say, he lost....and he lost the ball too.

Photobucket
Mustang linebacker Morgan drills the ball carrier, forcing a fumble and injury

Steve Black, Texas Tech, QB

Steve Black was harassed in the pocket all day against Red River. The defensive linemen pinned their ears back and went after him, forcing five interceptions and four sacks, including these two monstrous hits

Mike Spence levels QB Black from the front

Nick Blanks gets the big sack coming off the blind side

Caption Contest

This week's strange photo of the week comes to us from the Caddo-Cincy game. Logan Paddock came down with the ball in the end zone surrounded by Cincy defenders, but the timing of the photo says it all. This week's winner will receive an "Attaboy" (or girl) and a prize of some sort to be named later when this author is better rested.

Check in later as we preview week two of the college football season.

College Football Live - Midweek

Crazy Opening Weekend Revisited. Look Ahead to Next Week

ESPN - With the opening weekend behind us, we look back at how everything changed after a handful of shocking upsets and how things changed in the aftermath. The rankings, the outlook, and even some coaching jobs fell victim to the wild weekend.

To start things off, we'll look at some of the dramatic upsets of the weekend. The upset bug started on Thursday night with Indiana completely overwhelming then #16-ranked Pittsburgh. The Hoosiers controlled all three phases of the game and dominated the Pathers from start to finish.

Friday saw the upset alerts continue as Arizona defeated the then #22-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. The Wildcats used their defensive front to stymie the Tar Heel offense. While on offense, Arizona moved the ball effectively against the strong Tar Heel defense.

On Saturday, the upsets were in full swing. Milford provided a thrilling comeback and upset of then #17-ranked LSU. The Patriots trailed 42-17 before mounting a historic comeback to win in probably the biggest upset of the weekend.

Horizon State needed overtime to thwart Arkansas. Arkansas mounted a rally from ten points down in the fourth to tie it at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, the Rattlers struck first with a touchdown. On the Razorback's overtime possession, the Rattlers sealed the victory with an interception on fourth down.

South Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State found out the hard way what happens when you commit too many turnovers, especially in the red zone. All three teams turned the ball over in both red zones and eventually were defeated by Southern Mississippi, Wileyville, Western Michigan, and Prescott Valley.

Sunday provided more thrilling action as New Holland owned every phase of the game against then #6 Florida. Aside from one play, the Dragons contained the Gators and imposed their will.

Red River capped the wild weekend with avenging last season's embarrassing loss to the Red Raiders. The Sabercats running game took control of this offensive slugfest, grinding out 464 yards on the ground.

In our marquee matchups, the scores did not tell the total domination our BCS-buster-hopefuls had over their highly-regarded opponents. Boise State completely dominated Virginia Tech through the first three quarters, leading 49-7 before the starters left the game. TCU had a 31-3 edge before their starters left the game as well. Both Virginia Tech and Oregon State managed to make the scores look a little more respectable going against the second- and third-stringers.

In the fallout of this weekend's games, Michigan is now searching for a new head coach. They fired their coach after a dismal and humiliating effort against rival Wileyville. Until a new coach is found, the coordinators will share responsibility for the team.

Also, Michigan State's Head Coach resigned his position this week after a heart attack and subsequent surgery. In his place, the Spartans named Dalton Henry, the team's defensive coordinator, to be the interim head coach. If the Spartans find success this year, Henry will likely lose the interim title.

Looking forward to this week's slate of games, the week starts off with a bang in the SEC. Caddo, victors over Cincinnati last week, hosts Auburn in this early SEC battle. Caddo brings in a dominant rushing attack to the game. If the Panthers hope to compete, this rushing game really needs to step up. Auburn has a much bigger and stronger defense than the Bearcats.

Friday brings us a pair of rivalry games. The early matchup has #21-ranked Houston against UTEP. The night game is The Friends of Coal Bowl. West Virginia and Marshall will battle it out.

Saturday has an intriguing set of games. Georgia and South Carolina have an early SEC East matchup to see who gets the upper hand in the SEC Eat race. In their annual rivalry game, Michigan goes against Notre Dame. Michigan is coming off a terrible performance that got their coach fired. Notre Dame is coming off of a win against their in-state rival Purdue. Our marquee game this weekend is #13 Oklahoma hosting #16 Florida State.

With us profiling new coaches this season, we'll take a look at who they play this week.

Two new coaches face each other this week. Arizona State travels to Hawaii to face Pipeline. This game has the chance to showcase two potent aerial assaults. Expect the over-under line for this game to climb into triple-digits before kickoff.

Two other new coaches go head-to-head this week. Michigan State travels down to Hoosier State in a rivalry matchup. Michigan State is coming off the upset loss to Western Michigan and losing their head coach to a medical ailment. expect their emotions to run high in this one. Hoosier State is coming off of a near-upset of top-ranked Alabama. The Miners took it into double-overtime before falling.

Upstart Milford, coming off the biggest win in school history, is set to face top-ranked Alabama. The Crimson Tide were sluggish in their double-overtime scare last week. If we see similar performances from both teams this week, Milford may just make a new case for biggest win in school history.

Horizon State and Ohio State meet at The Horseshoe this week. Horizon State needed overtime to decide their win last week while Ohio State was completely embarrassed last week. If the Buckeyes don't right the ship, another heart-breaking loss could be in order if the Rattlers play like they did last week.

New Holland opens up ACC play facing Wake Forest. Wake Forest easily won their tune up against an opponent from the FCS. New Holland, however, completely controlled Florida in their win and moved into the Top-25.

Red River opens up conference play in the C-USA against Tulsa. Tulsa defeated Florida Atlantic last week. Red River took home the Panhandle Shootout against Texas Tech last week.

Independence brings their high-octane passing offense into Eugene to face #4-ranked Oregon and their high-octane spread-option. The Zoo will be noisy for this game so Independence will have issues with snap counts and audibles.

Wileyville, fresh off their win of the Chippewa Canoe, travels down to The Swamp to face #17-ranked Florida. Florida was held in check against the Dragons last week while Wileyville ran all over mistake-prone Michigan.

USC hosts Prescott Valley in their first game. Prescott Valley comes into the game ranked at #18 after their domination of the Buckeyes. USC has questions surrounding their defense after losing many starters off last year's squad. With a new coach as well, who knows what we will see from the Trojans.

Eastern Michigan travels to Miami (OH) to begin MAC play. Miami (OH) won last week against against an FCS opponent while Eastern Michigan lost to Army.

Purdue, coming off a rivalry loss to Notre Dame, hosts Eastern Illinois this week. This should be an easy win against an FCS opponent for the Boilermakers in their home opener.

Two new coaches have the week off. Arizona, ranked #19 after their win over North Carolina, and Indiana are idle. They play next week where Arizona hosts Iowa and Indiana travels to Florida to face Miami.

In recruiting news, 92 prospects have made commitments to their respective schools. Four five-star recruits have already made their decisions on where they will go next season. Included in those 92 are 18 recruits rated in the ESPN 150.

Scott Wheeler, the second-rated halfback and second overall, has decided to attend Penn State. Wheeler, the Rotterdam, NY native, spurn New Holland and Michigan by choosing to attend Penn State.

Third-rated prospect and top quarterback in this year's class, Reggie Washington signed with Texas. Washington is going to remain in-state, leaving Flower Mound to head to Austin.

Despite the debacle at home last week, Florida snagged Jacob Miller, the top-rated defensive tackle from Fort Walton Beach, FL. Miller is also the fifth-rated prospect overall.

Texas made another splash landing another five-star recruit. Seagoville, TX-native Mark Mitchell committed to Texas as well. Mitchell is #18 overall and the top tight end in the recruiting picture.

For more detailed recruiting information, follow along on the website where we track every team's recruiting logs. We'll keep you up to date on the recruiting wire.

On the injury front, there are a few key injuries that can affect this week's outcomes. Notable injuries this week:

Landon Jones (RS SO), Cal, HB, out for two weeks with an abdominal strain
Will Anderson (RS JR), Illinois, OLB, out for season with a broken elbow
William Schultz (JR RS), Iowa, RT, out for four weeks with a broken tailbone
Joshua Jones (SO RS), Iowa, LT, out for six weeks with a broken tibia
Ryan Wood (SR), Kansas St, HB, out for ten weeks with a dislocated elbow
Jeremy Paul (SR), Miami (FL), HB, out for two weeks with a stress fracture
Al Mayo (JR), Missouri, QB, out for five weeks with a broken hand
Paul Cummings (SR), Nebraska, RG, out for nine weeks with a strained back
Quinton Corbett (FR), Notre Dame, out for a week with a strained back
T.J. Landry (SR), Ohio State, CB, out for season with a torn rotator cuff
Blake Peterson (FR), Purdue, RG, out for season with torn MCL
Luke Rawls (SO RS), S. Carolina, HB, out for four weeks with partially torn PCL
Travis Tillman (SO), S. Carolina, SS, out for season with a foot fracture
Ray Graham (SO), S. Carolina, WR, out for four weeks with a torn pectoral
Ricky Gardner (SO), Utah, QB, out for one week with a sprained elbow

These are not every listed player with an injury, but more notable injuries within college football.

And with that, we look forward to next week's matchups. Will this week bring more drama with wild finishes and some upset victories? Or will college football return to the status quo where the top schools defeat the lower schools?
