Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

The Quarry Report

Both defenses MIA in Rivalry Shootout

Fort Wayne, IN - Both teams apparently forgot how to play defense in this edition of the Michigan State-Hoosier State rivalry. Both sides combined for over 1,300 yards of total offense and 106 points. The name of this game was the big play. Hoosier State ended with nearly a quarter of their plays going for over 20 yards. Michigan State had one-fifth of their plays end after a 20-plus yard gain.

"We just forgot to play defense," Spartans Interim Head Coach Dalton Henry remarked. "We have to play better on that side of the ball. Giving up 66 points is embarrassing."

Coach Corbin echoed Coach Henry's sentiment, "There's no reason to give up that number of big plays on defense. That's something we are going to fix next week. I hate how our defense played for the vast majority of the game."

In a game marred by poor defense, Hoosier State's defense came up with the first big play of the game on the game's first play. Linebacker Tyler Merriman stripped Spartan running back Eric Lawson and defensive tackle Justin Cutler recovered the loose ball.

Running back David Banks would power his way into the endzone to start the scoring frenzy. His two-yard run put the Miners up 7-0 just over a minute into the game.

Just over a minute later, the Spartans would respond with Eric Lawson breaking through the Miner front line and into the secondary. A quick move and Lawson was home free on a 65-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7.

Two more big plays on offense for the Miners and they would have a 21-7 lead after the first quarter. Quarterback Noah Alfred would find Michael Weeks on a short hook route. Weeks would toss the defender aside and go in from 29 yards out. Towards the end of the quarter, tackle Paul Montgomery would pancake the defensive end and then the safety to spring Banks on a 76-yard scamper for a touchdown.

The second quarter would feature a dominant offensive performance from both teams, save one play, a 68-yard interception return by the Spartan's Robinson. The teams would combine to score 41 points in the quarter, 21 for the Miners and 20 for the Spartans, to bring the halftime score to 42-27.

The Miners had opened the gap to 28-10 after a Spartan field goal and another Weeks TD catch, but the Spartans answered back with a two-play, 80-yard drive and then the pick-six to close the gap to 28-24 before Hoosier State a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:35 to open it back up. The Spartans would add their second field goal as the half ended.

The second half was not quite as thrilling as the first half. The Miners opened up on a long, methodical drive to jump out to a 49-27 lead on John Magnum's 17-yard TD catch, his second of the day.

Michigan State would then have another quick drive. Halfback Phillips, replacing the injured Lawson and Baker, would take the handoff and break through the Miner defense to go 81 yards for the answering touchdown. The two-point conversion would get stopped and the Miners held to a 49-33 lead. The Miners would add another touchdown before the quarter ended to extend the lead to 56-33.

In the fourth quarter, the defenses looked like they actually wanted to play in the game. It was by far the slowest quarter of the game with only 17 combined points. The big plays that were prevalent in the first three quarters had also been kept to a minimum. Only Matt Church had a play of 20-plus yards. Church took the dump-off pass from Brett Fagan on 3rd-&-12, broke a tackle and then raced 75 yards for the touchdown for the final points of the game.

"We need to step up defensively," defensive end Jeff Fogle remarked. "We didn't do that this game at all. We put too much pressure on our offense to score by playing so poorly. Good thing Noah and the offense was up to it."

Quarterback Noah Alfred tied a 46-year old record for passing touchdowns in a game with five. Ironically, Alfred's performance came on the same day that the Miners were honoring their greatest quarterback. Max Power, along with twelve other players, were enshrined in the new Quarry Museum next to the stadium.

"Alfred can play," the 66-year old Miner legend responded. "If he can put up those kinds of numbers over his career, I'll be long forgotten." Power set numerous records in his four-year career at Hoosier State. Many of which still stand to this day. "As far as the game went, we could have used more defense but I appreciate the offensive excitement this game brought."

The Miners host Michigan next week in another rivalry game. Coach Corbin professes that the defense will show up on time for the game next week. With the win, Hoosier State evens their record at 1-1 on the season while Michigan State dropped to 0-2.

Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

College Football Overdrive

Early Action Mostly Following Status Quo

ESPN - Our early games today are mostly following the status quo of college football. We really don't have anyone on upset alert in any of our first round of games.

If you were with us Thursday night, Caddo forced six interceptions to turn a close 17-10 game into a 62-10 blowout. After the game, Coach Mourneaux praised his defense, "Those men out there on defense really stepped up today. They forced seven turnovers, six of them interceptions. They even took two of the picks all the way back for six. They played great. It gets the SEC season off on the right foot for us."

Auburn was a top favorite in the SEC West this season along with Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. Any one of those four teams at the beginning of the season could have made an argument for being at the top at season's end and it would be a good one. Now, after a sluggish Bama performance in their opener, the SEC West race was definitely a hotbed of contention. Add in Auburn's loss Thursday night and it becomes even tougher to predict the SEC West.

Friday night showed a pair of rivalry games. The early game featured a Texas rivalry, UTEP traveling to #22-ranked Houston. Early on in the game, both teams were pretty even, ending the first half knotted at 14-14. The depth and talent of Houston pushed the Cougars out in front of the Miners in the second half, pulling away to a 38-21 win.

In our Friday nightcap, it was The Friends of Coal Bowl between Marshall and #23-ranked West Virginia. West Virginia traveled to Marshall for this rivalry matchup. In what was thought to be an offensive battle turned into a defensive fight. West Virginia struggled to move the ball all game long on the stiff Marshall defense. How West Virginia struggled, Marshall was worse offensively. If not for two plays that accounted for one-third of Marshall's total offense and one-fourth of their total yardage, the game would be entirely different. A 97-yard kickoff return and a 64-yard TD pass were the almost the only offense Marshall could muster and it was enough to get the Herd the win, 17-13.

We have a full slate of games this afternoon for you. Our marquee game is #16-ranked Florida State traveling to Norman to face #13-ranked Oklahoma. Other notable games today are:

Milford at #1 Alabama

Horizon State at #15 Ohio State

#18 Prescott Valley at #10 USC

Michigan State at Hoosier State

Cal at Tennessee

#24 Georgia at South Carolina

Michigan at Notre Dame

Those should be good games to watch. Top-ranked Alabama was sluggish last week against Hoosier State and they face Milford, who's coming off a magical win over LSU. Ohio State was embarrassed last week at home and they have Horizon State there who took down Arkansas. Prescott Valley embarrassed the Buckeyes in The Horseshoe and now they face USC in USC's opener. Cal and Tennessee are two good and evenly-matched schools in power conferences and they should provide a great game today. South Carolina hosts #24 Georgia in an SEC East showdown. The winner there has a leg up in the SEC East race. And finally, one of the three circles on Michigan schedules comes this week with a trip to South Bend to face Notre Dame. Michigan has no head coach after he was terminated last week while the Irish and their new coach rolled over Purdue.

Now we'll update you on scores around the nation:

Michigan State and Hoosier State are have one defensive battle in Fort Wayne. The two schools have combined for 69 points in the first half shootout. Arizona State has been able to slow Pipeline's high-speed offense down some, taking a 14-10 lead into the break. LSU and Vanderbilt are tied going into halftime as well. LSU might be having a bit of a hangover effect in the first half there. Southern Mississippi might be having that same effect in their game as well. The Eagles are tied 7-7 with Prairie View A&M nearing halftime.

Stay with us here at College Football Overdrive as we continue to keep you up-to-the-minute with scores around the nation as well as drop you live into games around the nation. With that, we'll take you out to Tuscaloosa where the Crimson Tide are playing the upstart Patriots.

Re: Climbing the Ranks to FBS: A multi-team dynasty

The Patriot Rag

Milford Needs Triple-Overtime in Thriller with Alabama

Tuscaloosa, AL - Alabama, coming off a lack-luster performance against Hoosier State, started off strong but became complacent as the game continued. The Crimson Tide had to rally late in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime for the second week in a row. This time, their half-hearted effort came back to bite them as Milford pulled off the major upset for the second week in a row.

Milford walked into Bryant-Denny Stadium with confidence. They walked out of the stadium with a swagger. The Patriots needed three overtimes to accomplish the feat this time.

Drenched in Gatorade again, Coach Bowden remarked, "This team continues to surprise me. They fought hard and didn't give up. They went out there and gave it their all and it paid off for them again."

Milford once again found themselves in an early hole. On Alabama's first drive, William Riley rushed on all three plays, the last one being a 65-yard touchdown run.

After a Milford touchdown to tie it, Alabama's defense made the big play as Galloway scooped up a fumble and outran the Patriot offense to the endzone. This would put Alabama up 14-7 with just under 6:00 on the clock.

Milford would only be able to muster a field goal on their next drive to cut into the lead 14-10. That narrow gap was short-lived as Eddie Gray went 75 yards on the Tide's second play of the drive to increase the lead to 21-10. After another Milford turnover, Alabama would add another field goal to give them a 24-10 lead.

The tide would begin to shift midway through the second quarter. An errant Jake Mackey pass forced Alabama to punt from near midfield. Safety Brad Crowder would break through the line and block the punt, giving Milford the ball at Alabama's 36 yard line. Four plays later, Seth Morris would cut the lead in half, 24-17.

Alabama was forced to punt once again on their next possession and Crowder nearly had his second block of the game. Instead, he forced a bad punt and Milford was able to start in better field position with just over two minutes in the half. Sean Beck would get the equalizer with 0:20 left in the half, catching a 13-yard pass from Jesse Wolf.

Coming out of halftime tied 24-24, Milford took the second-half kickoff and strung together a long drive. The 14-play, 78-yard drive would end with Wolf scrambling in from five yards out. The 31-24 lead would stand through the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Alabama would add another field goal to bring it to 31-27. The teams would trade possessions until Alabama began to move the ball well once again.

The Tide would move to the Patriot 21 yard line with a little over three minutes left. On 3rd-&-4 from the Patriot 21, Riley would break off a touchdown run to potentially put Alabama ahead 33-31. A holding call would negate the play and push the Tide back. The 3rd-&-long play would net Alabama nothing as Mackey's pass to McClain was deflected away. Alabama opted for the field goal from 47 yards away, which split the uprights to bring it to 31-30 with 2:37 left to play.

Playing the field-position game with three timeouts still, Alabama kicked it deep, pinning the Patriots back at their own 18 yard line. Alabama stocked the line in preparation for three straight runs. Instead, Seth Morris found a crease and went 82 yards for the touchdown. Morris's 82-yard TD run gave Milford a 38-30 lead with just 2:23 to play.

"There wasn't much of a hole there," Morris replied. "But the o-line got enough of a gap for me to get through. After I hit that hole, all I had was one man back there to beat."

Alabama took control at their 20 yard line and set to rally once again. The Tide moved the ball quickly down the field until they stalled out at the 11 yard line. On 3rd-&-10 with 0:16, Riley was only able to get five yards on the draw but holding was called once again. Instead of forcing a 4th-&-5 from the 11, Milford pushed Alabama back. Mackey was able to hit Walters for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 0:07 left after missing on the 3rd-&-20 pass. Riley was able to convert on the two-point attempt to tie the score at 38-38.

In the first overtime, Alabama stalled out at the seven yard line and went for the field goal. Milford was forced to add a field goal of their own after Wolf was nearly intercepted on third down.

The second overtime saw Wolf hit Cam Austin on an out route from eleven yards on 3rd-&-4 to give Milford a 48-41 lead. Alabama only needed one play in their half of the second overtime as Riley ran 25 yards for his second touchdown of the game.

In the third overtime, Alabama was forced to go for the field goal again, Greenwood's fifth of the game, after Mackey was sacked by Bryan Wesley, his second of the game.

Milford would make short use of their turn at offense in the third overtime. Morris would gain a first down on the first play with a 12-yard run. Robbie Rivers would haul in his only catch of the game, a 10-yard reception to give the Patriots a 1st-&-goal at the three. Wolf would drop back to pass on the play but the blitz from Alabama forced him to scramble. Wolf would plow into the end zone with a defender in tow to win the game for Milford, 54-51 in triple-overtime.

"I dropped back to pass on that last play," Wolf answered. "They came with a blitz from behind me and I had to tuck it or throw it away. There was a little gap between Reg [right guard Reggie Newell] and Hammy [right tackle Mike Hamilton] so I tucked it. Whoever hit me for them is pretty stout, but luckily I was able to get across the line before he could wrench the ball away."

Milford, for the second week in a row, has shocked the college football world by pulling off a major upset. Last week, it was rallying from a 42-17 deficit to defeat then-#17-ranked LSU 66-63. This week it was top-ranked Alabama 54-51 in triple-overtime. How much magic does this Cinderella team have left?
