The Coaching Legacy of Gus Malzahn: Vandy's Rise to Greatness

Platform: PS3
Roster: Luvtotha9
Sliders: Fistorage's Heisman
Offense: Malzahn's spread (Auburn playbook)
Defense: 4-3

Personal Goals of this Dynasty
It was heavily rumored Gus Malzahn would leave Auburn to become the head coach at Vanderbilt. Now, in real life that didn't happen, but in this virtual world, Coach Malzahn is finally getting his head coaching career underway. Coach Malzahn does not plan on leaving Vanderbilt any time soon and wants to turn them into an elite SEC program. I must win at least 5 conference championships and 1 national championship before I can consider another job. I will run Malzahn's spread offense using Auburn's playbook. I will be simulating the first season in order to get in line with where we are in real life and when Malzahn would be taking over the Vanderbilt program.

Vanderbilt Football History

Early Success
Vanderbilt and the University of Nashville played the first college football game in the state of Tennessee in 1890. In 1894 Vanderbilt was among the seven founding members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Just after the turn of the century, the team enjoyed fairly substantial success, with a composite record of 20-3-2 from 1901-1903. That same year, Vanderbilt began one of its oldes rivalries: the Vanderbilt-Ole Miss rivalry. Even so, Dan McGuin’s arrival as coach from his brother-in-law Fielding H. Yost’s Michigan program in 1904 showed an immediate impact. The 1904 squad outscored its opposition 474-4 in winning all nine games. McGuin’s tenure spanned from 1904-1917 and 1919-1934 with a record of 197-55-19 and two national championships.

Growing Difficulty

However, Vanderbilt football has not won a conference championship since 1923. Vanderbilt has competed in only four bowl games, with a combined all-time post-season record of 2–1–1. By comparison, none of the SEC's other charter members have fewer than 14 bowl appearances. Vanderbilt has finished ranked once, in 1948, when it finished #12 in the AP poll after an 8–2–1 season.

The Commodores have found the going especially difficult since their last period of sustained success in the mid-1950s. Since 1959, Vanderbilt has posted only four winning seasons—in 1974, 1975, 1982 and 2008.
This trend seemed to be abating in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, with two of Vanderbilt's post-season appearances coming in 1974 and 1982, and with several near-winning season records.

The last Commodore team before the Bobby Johnson era with a winning record, George MaCintyre's 1982 squad (with a record of 8–4), played in the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to the school's third all-time bowl appearance, the 1982 team's season-ending win against Tennessee, in which Vanderbilt quarterback Whit Taylor threw for 391 yards, marked a special season—but a season that proved an exception to years following, when a return to previous levels of mediocrity saw a veritable merry-go-round of head coaches.

MacIntyre was unable to put together another winner, and left after the 1985 season. From 1986 to 2001, when Bobby Johnson was hired, Vanderbilt was led by five coaches who averaged only four wins per season. During this time, the Commodores won only 18 games in SEC play. Included in this run were three 1–10 overall records, as well as five winless SEC records.

Recent Resurgence
Bobby Johnson was hired in 2002 as the head football coach. Johnson had previously coached at NCAA Division I-AA power Furman, leading the Paladins to the Division I-AA Championship Game in 2001, his final year. However, at the time, some questioned the wisdom of hiring a I-AA coach to lead a program in what has widely been reckoned as the strongest football conference in the nation.

Vanderbilt officials had pursued and offered the position initially to Gary Barnett and Tyrone Willingham, both of whom had steered small, private universities (Northwestern and Stanford, respectively) to football success. Both turned down the job for different reasons.

The same critics that questioned Johnson's initial hiring also derided the loyalty given to Coach Johnson by the Vanderbilt administration after his first three seasons at the school led to three consecutive 2–9 records. During this time, however, Johnson was continuing to recruit players that had been passed over by major-power schools, but whom Johnson and his staff believed could be molded into SEC-caliber players.

Well, it looks like in real life Gus turned Vanderbilt down, but not in the virtual world. Gus Malzahn, Auburn's offensive coordinator, has decided to cash in on Auburn's immense 2010 success.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Gus Malzahn: Vandy's Rise to Greatness

Vanderbilt Fans Excitedly Welcome New Coach

Nasville, TN -- To those that know him, Gus Malzahn is a religious man deeply rooted in his faith. Malzahn is a fiery coach whose passion for football very obvious for anyone who has ever had a conversation for him. Malzahn got his start as a high school coach in Arkansas. Best known for turning Shiloh Christian, a private school in Springdale, AR, into a high school powerhouse. The offensive minded coach actually got his start as a defensive coordinator at Hughes High School in Hughes, Arkansas. After leading Hughes to a state championship game runner-up Malzahn moved on to be the head coach at Shiloh Christian. This is where the offensive genius that is Gus Malzahn was made known to the state. His offense in 1998 set a national record for touchdown passes in a season with 66. After leading Shiloh Christian to back-to-back state championships, Malzahn too a head coaching job just down the road at AAAAA West state power Springdale High School. In his final year at Springdale, Malzahn lead an offense with three division one players on the offensive side of the ball. Malzahn's nationally ranked 2005 Springdale squad put together what some consider the most impressive season in state history as they ran roughshod over the competition enroute to a perfect 14-0 season and a state championship. Some consider that Springdale team one of, if not the best high school team in Arkansas history.

One year later the University of Arkansas made a controversial move in hiring Malzahn as their offensive coordinator. Some saw it as a move only to land all three of Malzahn's high profile recruits from Springdale: five star quarterback Mitch Mustain, four star wide-receiver Damian Williams, and three star tight end Ben Cleveland. In the end, Arkansas got all three players. Despite an 8-1 start to the 2006 season, a fallout between Malzahn and Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt, Malzahn left after just one year with Arkansas to take over play calling duties at Tulsa University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During Malzahn's first year at Tulsa he emerged as one of the premier offensive coordinators in the nation. The Tulsa offense finished the 2007 season with the nation's number one ranked offense in terms of yards per game. That Tulsa team became the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000 yard passer, a 1,000 yard rusher, and a 1,000 yard receiver. In 2008 Tulsa lead the nation in offense once again, averaging 570 yards per game, and second in points per game scoring 47 points per contest.

After his two year stint at Tulsa, Malzahn accepted the job of offensive coordinator for new Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. In 2010, Malzahn became one of the hottest commodities for any and every vacant head coaching position as his 2010 Auburn offense rolled over opponents on their way to a 13-0 record, and SEC Championship, and an appearance in the national championship game. Malzahn took little known junior college transfer quarterback Cam Newton and turned him into a Heisman Trophy winner and a household name. After Robbie Caldwell stepped down from his position of Vanderbilt's head coach after just one season, the university pressed hard to land Malzahn. Trying to get their football program back on the same track they were on under Bobby Johnson before he unexpectedly retired before the 2010 season.

Coach Malzahn
"I couldn't be more excited to be here. I feel like it's time for me to get out on my own and show I can lead my own football program as a head coach. I understand there are some doubters out there. That's fine. I'm here to do two things, mold young men into leaders, and win football games. If I do both successfully then everything else will fall in line."
It won't be easy. Vanderbilt has forever been known as a cellar dweller in the SEC and someone other SEC schools use to take out their frustrations on. Coming off a 7-6 campaign that saw Vanderbilt make a bowl game for just the fifth time in school history, Malzahn has something to build on.

Malzahn
"They had a good year last season. Not many expected them to make a bowl game or even win many games. However, they won 7 games, finished second in the East, and showed they can be competitive. I feel like we return enough players to build on that and continue the success."

The 2011 football season for Vanderbilt will definitely be one more people pay attention to. A new head coach coming off the school's fifth ever bowl appearance, looking to make their way from cellar dweller to contender. Yes, the 2011 season will be an intriguing one for Commodore fans and their new coach, Gus Malzahn, is hoping they can start to open some eyes nation wide.

Blacksburg, VA - The final score may only read 45-33, but in all actuality, the game was not ever that competitive. Vanderbilt put together a nice run in the fourth quarter and scored a late TD with only 0:08 left in the game. At one point in the second half Virginia Tech lead 42-17 and never looked back. The Virginia Tech defense had their way with Vanderbilt's offense, picking off Vanderbilt quarterback Larry Smith 6 times on the day. Six interceptions is ugly no matter how you look at it, and it's actually a testament to the Commodores who were still able to make it a 12 point game in the end.
"I don't know what to tell the kid. Six interceptions is bad...real bad. But Larry will bounce back and be able to go next week. Virginia Tech has a great defense and we had no answer for them. They were pressuring our quarterback all game long and it caused some interceptions. Ugly loss, but we'll go to work this week to figure out what we did wrong, and correct our mistakes before next weeks games." Commented Vanderbilt Head Coach Gus Malzahn

Zach Stacy looks in a pass. Stacy would turn this catch into a 68 yard touchdown. It was the lone Vanderbilt highlight of the game.
