Durham, NC --- Duke lost this game. Coach Orlovsky spent the night with Coach Saban's wife in a bed. All that remains of the game is the box score, as all photos and videos of the game were lost in a car bomb.

Week 3
Convincing Win - Finally
Duke slams Army 35-6

Linebacker Alex Kromah picks off an errant pass.

September 11, 2010

Durham, NC --- Durham, NC --- Coach Orlovsky walked into the press conference room, shirtless, bawling his eyes out.

Everyone was confused, as Duke had just picked up its first victory over Army in convincing fashion, 35-6.

"Coach, what's wrong?" asked one brave reporter.

"My pet donkey Roberto died, and my boyfriend Brett broke up with me," answered the distraught Orlovsky.

"Well, what about your big win vs Army?" persisted the reporter.

"**** you. I'm having a moment here," retorted the visibly upset Orlovsky.

Orlovsky, once again, sprinted out of the room. No mention of his quarterback's superb 4-touchdown performance, or his star linebacker Alex Kromah's outstanding pick-six. Hopefully Orlovsky's negative outlook doesn't carry over into Duke's performance in next week's game against ACC rival Maryland.

Re: Duke Football: The Dan Orlovsky Era

Week 5
Duke Falls in Ames
Backup QB Jerome Tiller tears up Duke defense

Jerome Tiller played wonderfully in place of injured starter Austen Arnaud.

September 25, 2010

Ames, IA -- When Duke learned that Iowa State starting quarterback Austen Arnaud was out for the season with a broken elbow, they expected to face a dumbed-down version of the Cyclones' no-huddle spread offense.

They were wrong to do so.

Sophomore quarterback Jerome Tiller showed complete command of his offense, and led the Cyclones to 539 yards and 40 points. When asked by reporters if he expected to play this well in his 1st start of the season, Tiller replied: "Yes, yes I did. And that's for a couple of reasons. First, I always have the utmost confidence in myself. I know that I am really, really, really, really good. I can be pretty much unstoppable. Second, we discovered on tape that (cornerback Zach) Greene could be completely burned with a double move. That's how we got 2 of our touchdowns today."

When told of Tiller's comments, Greene went off. "I hate that little ******! I hate him with a passion! We used to be best friends growing up in the 'hood, and now he throws me under the bus like that? We better be playing those fools next year because if we do we're gonna kick their ***."

But Tiller wasn't the only unstoppable player on the field today. Junior running back Alexander Robinson, one of the most underrated players in the Big 12, rushed for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns. Robinson declined to comment after the game on his impressive performance.

The big enigma of the game was how Duke didnt score more points. The Blue Devils racked up 537 yards - just 2 less than Iowa State - Duke lost the game by 20. 2 factors can explain this. First, Duke's 3rd down conversion percentage (38%) was significantly lower than that of Iowa State (54%). Second, Duke had no balance. The Duke offensive line and running back Desmond Scott were unable to establish any sort of ground game, which led to a complete reliance on quarterback Sean Renfree, which can't have helped.

Whatever the problem is, Duke needs to fix it soon with conference play coming up.

Durham, NC --- For yet another week, no article can be written. All of the journalists remain hand-less in the hospital. Our apologies.

*I apologize for the lack of written articles on these past few games. These games were played months ago, before I knew I would be recording this, and for whatever reasons I didn't write articles for some games.

Re: Duke Football: The Dan Orlovsky Era

Week 8
A Win is a Win
It wasn't pretty, but a 28-23 victory over Navy brings Duke to 3-4

LB Austin Gamble lays on the ground in celebration of the win.

October 16, 2010

Annapolis, MA -- In a game that was probably closer than what Coach Orlovsky would have liked, the Blue Devils nonetheless pulled out the close win over Navy. Though QB Sean Renfree did not crack the 50% completion percentage mark, he did show moxie when his team needed it it, with his 3 touchdown passes, including ones to sophomore Justin Trezvant and junior Justin Varner.

However, the most significant of the 3 was the 51-yard strike to senior wideout Austin Kelly. With a 3-point lead and 4 minutes remaining, Duke had the ball near midfield and a 3rd-and-long. Coach Orlovsky dialed up a four-vertical out of the shotgun, and Renfree saw single coverage on Kelly. A perfectly thrown ball just over the outstretched fingertips of Navy safety Adam Morrison into the hands of Austin Kelly and Duke had pretty much locked up the game.

The game wouldn't have even been Duke's to win, however, without the outstanding play of junior free safety Matt Daniels. At the end of the 1st half, trying to drive down the field, Midshipmen QB Ricky Dobbs attempted to throw a deep out. Daniels, who read Dobbs's eyes the whole way, made a fantastic break on the ball and picked it off, returning it 30 yards for a touchdown.

"Yeah, this win was for Coach Orlovsky. His pet donkey died a few weeks ago, and since then he has not talked. LIterally. He has not said a word. He makes play calls using hand signals alone," said Daniels in his post-game interview.

"-----------," said Coach Orlovsky in his post-game interview. Exactly, he didn't talk. Get it? Haha.

Re: Duke Football: The Dan Orlovsky Era

Week 9
Comeback!
17 4th-quarter points give Duke slim win over Virginia

Kicker Will Snyderwine celebrates after making the game-winning kick.

October 23, 2010

Durham, NC --- After a few weeks of silence in honor of his dead donkey Roberto, Coach Orlovsky was given reason to break his silence in Duke's thrilling 17-14 win over fellow ACC team Virginia. However, he still did not talk.

Anyways, back to the game. For the first 55 minutes of the game, Duke's offense could do absolutely nothing with the ball. QB Sean Renfree would have an open man, but he would get hit before getting the ball off. The offensive line would give Renfree ample time to throw the ball, but he would be unable to find an open receiver. Or, Renfree would finally get the ball to an open receiver only to have it dropped.

So when the Blue Devils found themselves down 14-0 halfway through the 4th quarter (the Duke defense, though having played well, had been unable to completely shut down the Cavaliers offense), they can't have been too optimistic.

However, things started to change when sophomore cornerback Zach Greene baited Virginia quarterback Marc Verica into an INT, which Greene returned for a beautiful pick-six.

On Virginia's following drive , Verica threw a post pattern to a wide-open Matt Snyder. Senior cornerback Chris Rwabukamba, who was trailing Snyder, stripped the ball from behind, and senior MLB David Thornton was able to scoop it up. An absolutely gorgeous 74-yard strike from Renfree to wideout Donovan Varner later and we had ourselves a tie ballgame.

But Coach Orlovksy-coached teams don't settle for tie games! A short 3-and-out by the Cavalier offense and Duke had the ball with 1 minute remaining, at midfield. Utilizing the power run game through the legs of sophomore back Darrell Scott, the suddenly unstoppable Blue Devil offense drove to the Virginia 14. With mere seconds remaining on the clock, kicker Will Snyderwine booted a 31-yard kick through the uprights to give Duke its 2nd win in conference play.

Coach Orlovsky still remains speechless (literally!) but kicker Will Snyderwine had no qualms with talking about his big moment.

"As I was getting ready to kick the ball, all I could think was: Will, whatever happens, grandma will still love me and give me pennies," Snyderwine said, as he kissed a 6-foot tall replica of his hideous grandma. All the reporters were too weirded out by that point, so the interview was over.

Go. Duke. Football.
