Game Report

UNHAPPY VALLEY
Michigan at Penn State comes down to the wire

McColgan scores a rare TD

University Park, Pennsylvania - When it comes to Big Ten play one thing that’s certain is you can throw out the records. Despite the difference in their records Michigan coach djp insisted that this would be one of their toughest games of the season. “Whenever you go into Happy Valley you’ve got your hands full.” he stated “We haven’t seen a crowd like this yet.”

The entire first quarter would be filled with the teams punting back and forth. Michigan’s entire offense was essentially Denard Robinson runs, he didn’t complete his first pass until the final play of the quarter when he connected with Koger for a 15 yard gain to the Penn State 27.

Michigan could get no closer and Broekhuizen connected from 44. Penn State would march right down the field and take the lead with a 12 yard Bolden to Royster pass. Michigan would lean heavily on Shaw and Smith and face a third and 1 at the Penn State 30. Shaw bounced outside and picked up a first down at the 27. Odoms took a bubble screen to the 22. The drive stalled there and Broekhuizen cut the lead to 1 with a 40 yarder. After Penn State turned it over on a fake punt incompletion Michigan gave it back on a Robinson fumble and Penn State extended their lead with a 21 yard Bolden to Brackett TD pass. With :30 left in the half Robinson connected with Odoms on an out route and he took it 69 yards to the Penn State 14. Michigan had :18 to make something happen. After 2 straight incompletions Robinson took off to the right and went in untouched. Roundtree couldn’t hold on to the conversion attempt and it was 14-12 Penn State with :06 left to play.

Michigan would have their first two drives end in turnovers as Robinson was intercepted and Shaw fumbled. Penn State went three and out on their first possession but didn’t waste the second as Bolden put them up 21-12 with a 69 yard pass to Suhey. Michigan would answer when a long drive was capped by a 2 yard TD run by Smith. Broekhuizen made it 21-19. Penn State would go three and out. Michigan took over at their own 33. Robinson would go over 1000 yards rushing on the season when he picked up a first down at the 50. Shaw carried to the 41. Shaw carried again to the 33 for another first down. Robinson found Stonum at the 17.

Smith picked up 5. Smith lost 2 and on third and 7 Robinson got to the 8. Broekhuizen put Michigan up by 1 with a 25 yard kick. A first down sack derailed Penn State’s next possession and they were forced to punt. Michigan took over on their own 23. On third and 12 Robinson got it to Stonum for a first down at the Penn State 36. Robinson took off and stepped out at the 16 for another first down. From there Smith carried to the 3. McColgan made the most of his rare carry by plowing over a defender and picking up the score. With 3:44 left Michigan was on top by 8 at 29-21. Michigan’s defense forced a three and out. After another Robinson interception Penn State drove down and scored on a 4 yard Bolden to Brown pass with just under a minute to play. Down by 2 Penn State would go for the conversion. Royster would plow his way in and with :56 left it was a tie game. Woolfolk returned the kick to the 32. Robinson hit Odoms to the Penn State 42. Michigan used their first time out with :44 left. Koger got wide open and Robinson found him for a first down at the 16. Smith carried to the 14 and Michigan called a time out with :02 left. Broekhuizen trotted out for a 31 yard attempt. Michigan would take a delay of game to improve the angle and Broekhuizen would split the uprights.

“We hung in there and we made plays when we needed them. We were definitely sloppy on offense but we’ll take the win. The guys really put the crowd out of their minds and played like we knew they could.”

Michigan goes to 8-0(4-0) while Penn State drops to 4-4(1-3)
